break on the Black Sea seabed link. No information on when the damage

to the government which sees information technologies as key to the

Artak Grigorian Believes that Armenia May Totally Give Up Compliment
ARTAK GRIGORIAN BELIEVES THAT ARMENIA MAY TOTALLY GIVE
UP COMPLEMENTARY FOREIGN POLICY
AZG Armenian Daily #147, 05/08/2006
Foreign policy
“If OSCE MG doesn’t change its approaches to the settlement of Nagorno
Karabakh problem, I think, Armenia may give up complementary foreign
policy,” Artak Grigorian, member of the Republican Party Board, stated
at today’s press conference. At the same time, he emphasized that till
now the complementary foreign policy of Armenia justified itself,
as the country managed to avert political stresses, to fix stable
economic growth. Grigorian familiarized the journalists with the
content of the federal seminar recently held by the Moscow School of
Political Sciences in Moscow. Sonya Likht, representative of Serbia,
expert of the Council of Europe, stated that by February 2007 one
may expect the recognition of Kosovo’s independence, as there are
no mechanisms that will make Kosovo return under the jurisdiction of
Beograd. The approach of the Serbian expert was supported by almost all
of the Western political experts. In reply to Grigorian’s remark that
the model of Kosovo conflict is similar to that of Nagorno Karabakh,
Chales Grant, representative of the British Council, stated that he has
no idea of the history of Nagorno Karabakh conflict. His colleagues
began telling Grigorian about the repression that Slabodan Milosevic
carried out against the Albanians from Kosovo and the liberation
struggle of the Albanian people. The Western experts tried to prove
to Grigorian that the conflict in Kosovo is a special one and can’t
be compared with that of Nagorno Karabakh.
“I am sure that they are well aware of the history of the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict, but the policy of double standards is being
displayed in more obvious forms,” he stated. He stated that one
could observe double standards also in the approaches to the Iranian
dossier. Thus, the former Israeli Idsurty Minister Natan Scharanskiy
stated that the attack of Iran by USA is unacceptable, as it threatens
the safety of Israel. In response to the remark of a Latvian expert
that the international legal norms do not allow consider the potential
threat as a ground for unfolding a war, Scharanskiy stated: “No! It
isn’t so.
As we deal with the security of Israel!” in response to Grigorian’s
question whether they took into account the probable consequences of
the was also for the South Caucasus states, Scharanskiy said: “I am
not interested in that at all.” The European political figures and
experts didn’t support the military settlement of the Iranian problem.
At Mostly Mozart, a Tousle-Haired Newcomer Joins a Returning Hero
AT MOSTLY MOZART, A TOUSLE-HAIRED NEWCOMER JOINS A RETURNING HERO
By STEVE SMITH
Published: August 7, 2006
The notion of viewing Mozart from the vantage point of what followed
him – both in close proximity and at a farther remove – is a central
principle of this year’s Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center.
The program presented by the guest conductor Osmo Vanska and the
festival orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall on Friday evening neatly
illustrated the concept, with a major work by Mozart preceded by
a modern homage and followed by a masterpiece by Beethoven, whose
revolutionary gestures were built on Mozart’s foundation.
Mr. Vanska, whose debut in the festival last year was a star-making
event, was greeted as a returning hero. An exacting musician, he
quickly revealed a care for textural balance and a predilection for
extremes of dynamics in the Swiss composer Frank Martin’s “Overture
in Homage to Mozart,” a tart but genial Neo-Classical curtain-raiser
commissioned in 1956 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s
birth.
Taking advantage of the improved acoustics of the reconfigured Avery
Fisher Hall, Mr. Vanska established a subdued base-line dynamic.
Hushed pianissimos compelled listeners to lean in close, and accented
notes and louder passages leapt out in striking contrast.
Wielding his baton with an urgent sweep, Mr. Vanska propelled Mozart’s
Symphony No. 35, the “Haffner,” at a tempo that initially seemed too
driven to sustain. Fine details of articulation were occasionally lost
in the headlong surge of the Allegro con spirito; that the ensemble
never lost cohesion was a testimony to its marked improvement over
the last few seasons.
Violins that were divided left and right on the stage yielded
heightened clarity in the clockwork Andante. Mr. Vanska led a courtly
Menuetto free of expressive quirks, and spurred a breathless Presto
finale.
The Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan, a 21-year-old past champion
of the Jean Sibelius and Queen Elisabeth competitions, made his
New York debut in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, a work that expanded
Mozart’s model of a virtuoso showcase into a forum for philosophical
rumination. Lanky and tousle-haired, Mr. Khachatryan projected intense
concentration in the first movement, his sweet tone and strikingly
introverted phrasing suggesting vulnerability and internal debate. He
shaped his lines fastidiously and executed them cleanly. Mr. Vanska,
departing from his previous metronomic precision, provided ideally
flexible accompaniment.
Clocking in at 26 minutes, the opening movement felt slightly prolonged
and episodic. Still, Mr. Khachatryan’s rapt account of Fritz Kreisler’s
cadenza was quietly dazzling, and his gentle sound against the muted
strings of the Larghetto was bewitching. The orchestra seemed to
breathe a collective sigh of relief when unleashed at last in a
buoyant Rondo, which elicited Mr. Khachatryan’s most effusive playing.
The audience responded with a tumultuous ovation, and Mr. Khachatryan
rewarded those who lingered with the Largo from Bach’s Unaccompanied
Sonata No. 3, broadly spun and richly expressive.

ARMENIA IS CUT OFF INTERNET AGAIN: CABLE BREAKAGES IN GEORGIA BECOME PERMANENT
TREND Information, Azerbaijan
Aug. 7, 2006
Author: Mammadov
(REGNUM) – For the last 48 hours, the population of Armenia has twice
been cut off the internet, REGNUM correspondent reported from Yerevan
on the telephone. On August 4 and 5, the reason of the breakdowns in
the work of Armenian internet providers became cable failures on the
territory of Georgia.
According to the national ArmenTel Company information holding
exclusive rights on maintaining international telecommunications
in Armenia, the current situation is caused by cable failure in the
Kutaisi region, which resulted in the absence of internet connection
in Armenia for 6 hours. Today, on August 5, cable was also broken
on the Black Sea seabed. No information on when the damage would be
fixed is available so far, reports Trend.
The government of Armenia regards information technologies development
the main priority of the country’s national economy. Meanwhile, the
republic remains in an utterly vulnerable position since the internet
connection is established through the only cable connecting Armenia via
Georgia on the Black Sea seabed to Ukraine. In the south of Armenia
the cable is connected to Iranian communication network. The current
internet connection breakdown is the third large-scale cable failure
that happened lately in Georgia.

[Presenter] The sheikh of the Caucasus, Haci Allahsukur Pasazada,
has criticized member countries of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference [OIC] for their indifference to the Nagornyy Karabakh
conflict. The sheikh said that otherwise Lebanon would not have been
subjected to Israel’s aggression.
[Pasazada, speaking over phone] The issues of Karabakh, Lebanon
and Palestinians were raised. All issues that we were interested
in were raised. I spoke and said that troops should withdraw from
Lebanon without preconditions, territories should be liberated and
negotiations should start. I also put forward suggestions.
As far as the Karabakh issue is concerned, I told them once again that
if you had supported me on time, there would have been no problem in
Lebanon. We say brothers, we are all brothers. But if we had supported
each other through difficult times, Armenia would not have attacked
us. If they had supported us when Armenia occupied our lands, no-one
would have attacked Lebanon today.
[Presenter] The sheikh of the Caucasus, Haci Allahsukur Pasazada,
said this in his speech at an international conference of religious
leaders of OIC member countries in Tehran.
In line with instructions from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev,
Azerbaijan has sent aid to Lebanon which has been subjected to Israel’s
aggression, Emergencies Minister Kamaladdin Heydarov has said.
Nearly 1,000 people were killed in Lebanon during 26 days of the
conflict.
