Investigators look into possible fire safety violation in Yerevan suburbs explosion

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. Law enforcement agencies are treating the February 5 explosion in a Yerevan district as an apparent accident allegedly caused by fire safety violation. 

A statement released by investigators made no indication of possible foul play behind the blast. 

The Investigative Committee said that a criminal case has been instituted under paragraph 2, article 357 of the Criminal Code which deals with ‘the violation of fire safety rules or requirements negligently causing death or other severe consequences.’

The cause of the blast is under investigation.

Georgia seizes cargo with explosives allegedly from Ukraine bound for Russia

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. Georgian intelligence services have thwarted what they described as an attempted smuggling of explosives from Ukraine to Russia through their territory.

According to the State Security Service of Georgia, the cargo of explosives was allegedly being shipped from Ukraine’s Odessa to Russia’s Voronezh for a terror plot. In a statement, the Georgian security service didn’t rule out that the organizers of the shipment also intended to carry out terror attacks in Georgia.

The suspects in the smuggling are reportedly citizens of Georgia, Ukraine and Armenia. According to the report, the smuggling was organized by “citizen of Ukraine, the candidate for deputy of the Kiev district of the local Rada of Odesa district in 2020 from the party "Servant of the People" Andrey Sharashidze, who is originally from the city of Batumi.”

The 14kg cargo sent from Ukraine reportedly reached Georgia on January 19 via Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

Explosion in Yerevan suburbs claims two lives

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. The explosion and the subsequent collapse that occurred Monday morning at 34 Nor Aresh Street in Yerevan, resulted in two fatalities and two injuries.  According to the order of the Director of the Rescue Service of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs, all forces have  returned to their deployment locations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

"Police received the 911 call on an explosion at 11:36.  The rescuers dispatched to the scene took out Hrant Sargsyan (born in 1994) and Roza Nazaryan (born in 1938) from the rubble, and they were immediately hospitalized. 

The search and rescue operations continued, and at 16:05 the bodies of Gayane Yeghoyan and Hayk Soghomonyan were taken out of the rubble.  Multiple search and rescue personnel were working at the scene.

As a result of the explosion, the houses No. 43 and No. 27a at 34 Nor Aresh Street have been completely collapsed, and several other house structures have been damaged," the statement reads.

According to the source, two combat units are on duty at the scene.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted. The cause of the explosion and other circumstances are being investigated.

Kazakh president accepts government’s resignation

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted the government's resignation on Monday, his office said in a statement, naming Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar as acting prime minister, replacing Alikhan Smailov.

The government members are to remain in temporary charge until new appointments are made, according to Kazinform news agency.

No reason for the move was given.

Smailov has been Kazakh prime minister since January 2022.

ICRC visits Armenian captives in Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representatives visited Armenian detainees in Azerbaijan in the end of January and in the beginning of February this year, ICRC Armenia representative Zara Amatuni told Armenpress.

She said that ICRC visited the captives who are acknowledged by Azerbaijan.

'These are regular visits which are agreed upon with the authorities of the given country,' she said.

The ICRC personnel reviewed the detention conditions and health of the captives and enabled them to contact their families.

A top law enforcement official in Armenia earlier said that 55 Armenians are currently held captive in Azerbaijan but Baku has so far acknowledged only 23 of them.

Yerevan Mayor vows to support victims of suburbs blast

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan has vowed to support the families affected in the February 5 explosion in the city’s Erebuni district.

In a statement released on social media, Mayor Avinyan expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the blast.

“I express deep condolences to the families of the victims and I wish speedy recovery to those injured,” he said. “I hope that the investigation will give answers to all questions. I assure you that the city, within its powers, will stand by these families.”

Two houses collapsed in an explosion at 34 Nor Aresh Street in Erebuni district on Monday morning. As of 17:00, rescuers pulled from the rubble two bodies and two survivors. The two survivors are hospitalized.

Iran to hold joint naval drill with Russia, China in weeks

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. Military forces from Iran, Russia and China are going to stage a joint naval war game in the coming weeks, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said, Tasnim reports.

It is noted that speaking at a naval base in Iran’s northern city of Manjil on Monday, Rear Admiral Irani said the joint exercise will be held before the end of the current Iranian year (March 19).

The commander noted that a number of other countries have also been invited to attend the joint drill.

“The war game will be held with the purpose of ensuring regional security and fulfilling common interests,” Tasnim quoted Shahram Irani as saying.

Netherlands to deliver six more F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS.  The Netherlands is preparing to deliver six additional F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Minister of Defense of the Netherlands Kajsa Ollongren said this in a post on the social platform X.

“The Netherlands Ministry of Defence is readying 6 additional F-16 fighter aircraft for delivery to Ukraine. This brings the total number to 24 F-16s. Ukraine's aerial superiority is essential for countering Russian aggression,” she posted.

Turkey’s annual inflation soars to 64.86 percent in January

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 5, ARMENPRESS. The Turkish economy continues struggling with sky-high inflation. The year-on-year headline inflation rate touched 64.86% in January, up from December's 64.77% and more than analyst estimates of 64.52%. It was also the highest figure since November 2022, reports Euronews.

Month-on-month inflation came in at 6.7%, a large step up from December's 2.93%, as well as slightly above market consensus of 6.49%.

It is noted that, however, core inflation for the month of January, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, clocked in at 70.48%, down from 70.64% in December.
