Armenia –

Hraparak daily of Armenia writes: The meeting between [Armenia’s PM] Nikol Pashinyan and Artsakh [(Nagorno-Karabakh)] President Arayik Harutyunyan took place yesterday.

Arayik Harutyunyan told his close circles about what a difficult meeting he had with Pashinyan, the latter repeated the official Baku's point of view that, in its view, Artsakh should be integrated with Azerbaijan, the people of Artsakh should find an understanding, live with Azerbaijanis because there is no alternative, or there is: in the form of war and extermination of 120 thousand Artsakh citizens. And he hoped that the international community promised to ensure [Artsakh] a certain status, autonomy within Azerbaijan. Arayik Harutyunyan returned to Artsakh with a heavy mood and impressions and told a close circle that he no longer wants to remain in the position of president.

It is noteworthy that yesterday the [Standing] Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the AR [(Artsakh Republic)] parliament was discussing the draft constitutional changes and gave a positive conclusion [to them].

To remind: the [aforesaid] changes relate to the possibility of the [Artsakh] NA [(National Assembly)] electing a president [of Artsakh] in the event of a vacancy in the position of president during martial law. The NA will elect the president of Artsakh until the termination of the term of office of the incumbent president. And Artsakh is under martial law since 1992. In political circles, they believe that Harutyunyan wants to transfer the president's seat to someone else as soon as possible.

YEREVAN, MARCH 9, ARMENPRESS. The total number of confirmed cases of measles in the ongoing local outbreak in Armenia has reached 43, the Armenian Ministry of Healthcare reported Thursday.

11 patients recovered while 17 others are hospitalized. Two of them are in serious condition.

40 of the 43 patients are unvaccinated, while the three others had skipped their second dose of the vaccine, according to the healthcare ministry.

Healthcare authorities recommend children get two doses of the measles vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age. The Armenian healthcare ministry advised parents to get their children vaccinated if they’ve missed the immunization schedule.

At the same time, unvaccinated direct contacts of confirmed cases should also get vaccinated, healthcare authorities said.

Measles is one of the world’s most contagious diseases. It is spread by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions.

The virus remains active and contagious in the air or on infected surfaces for up to 2 hours. It can be transmitted by an infected person from 4 days prior to the onset of the rash to 4 days after the rash erupts.

Unvaccinated young children are at highest risk of measles and its complications. Unvaccinated pregnant women are also at risk. Any non-immune person (who has not been vaccinated or was vaccinated but did not develop immunity) can become infected.

The first sign of measles is usually a high fever, which begins about 10 to 12 days after exposure to the virus, and lasts 4 to 7 days. A runny nose, a cough, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the cheeks can develop in the initial stage. After several days, a rash erupts, usually on the face and upper neck. Over about 3 days, the rash spreads, eventually reaching the hands and feet.

YEREVAN, MARCH 9, ARMENPRESS. United States Congressman Brad Sherman urged the House Appropriations Committee to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh), who are now blockaded by Azerbaijan.

[see video]
“The people of Artsakh are an Armenian community that have lived in that region for really thousands of years. Joseph Stalin, in his evil wisdom, made that region part of Azerbaijan rather than Armenia. The result has been terrible conflict, including what is now a three-month blockade of the Armenians living in that region. They desperately need humanitarian assistance and I hope you are generous in providing humanitarian assistance for the people of Artsakh,” Congressman Sherman said during the Appropriations Committee hearings for fiscal year 2024.

Congressman Frank Pallone in turn earlier called for $100 million in aid to Armenia and $50 million in aid to Artsakh.

YEREVAN, MARCH 9, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday again called for the deployment of an international fact-finding mission to Nagorno Karabakh and Lachin Corridor, emphasizing the increasing urgency for doing so in context of the latest Azerbaijani provocations.

Pashinyan made the remarks during the March 9 Cabinet meeting where he spoke about the Azerbaijani ambush in Nagorno Karabakh (NK) on March 5 that left three NK police officers dead and one wounded.

“In this context the deployment of an international fact-finding mission to Nagorno Karabakh and Lachin Corridor is becoming more and more urgent in order to prevent a new aggression by Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan’s explicit preparations for committing ethnic cleansing and genocide against the people of Nagorno Karabakh, which are manifested by the non-compliance with the rulings of international courts, closure of the Lachin Corridor and launching military provocations and acts of terrorism,” PM Pashinyan said.

PM Pashinyan reiterated Armenia’s commitment to the peace agenda and aspiration to achieve peace in the region.
