The European Weightlifting Championships were held in Armenia yesterday. The Azerbaijani flag was burned at the opening ceremony of the championship.

Upon the incident, a statement came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan"We strongly condemn this action, which is the embodiment of ethnic hatred towards Azerbaijan in Armenia. The government of Armenia, as the organizer of the incident, should have prevented such incidents in time and taken appropriate security measures. Despite the fact that the perpetrator was initially caught (by the hall staff), his release with applause was serious. It is a matter of concern. The Armenian side should bring the perpetrator of this hate crime to justice immediately."

A call was made to take necessary criminal actions against the organizers.

After the attack on the Azerbaijani flag, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the National Olympic Committee made a joint statement.

In the statement, which stated that the flag was burned by an accredited person at the opening ceremony, "The fact that such a barbaric act was carried out at the ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of Armenia (Nikol Pashinyan), that it was approved by the Armenian public and that the perpetrator of this act was declared a hero is a clear manifestation of ethnic hatred, racism, xenophobia and Azerbaijani enmity. This is also completely at odds with the main purpose and principles of sport, which promotes peace and mutual understanding between countries."

In the statement, it was emphasized that it is impossible for Azerbaijani athletes to participate in the competitions due to psychological pressures in Armenia, where such an atmosphere of hatred prevails and security cannot be provided.

The statement said, "Taking into account all these, it was decided to send the Azerbaijani athletes back to their homeland. Armenia should ensure their safe return."

Calling on the international community and international sports institutions to "strongly condemn the barbaric act", they said, "We call on the European Weightlifting Federation to impose sanctions on Armenia. We believe that this incident shows that Armenia cannot organize international sports competitions and ensure the safety of the athletes."

Armenia says Azerbaijani forces fired at a gold mine

MEHR News Agency
Iran –

TEHRAN, Apr. 15 (MNA) – Armenia has accused the Azerbaijani armed forces of opening fire at an Armenian gold mine on Friday.

The Armenian authorities said on Saturday that during the last twenty-four hours, the armed forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan fired at the Sotk gold mine in the Syunik Province.

"Last night, from 7 to 11 PM, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces opened fire in the direction of the Sotk Gold Mine. Ruzanna Grigoryan, the Head of PR & CSR at GeoProMining Gold Company, informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“In general, the situation was calm at night, but shootings resumed again in the morning, as a result of which we decided to stop the work of the mine and evacuate employees,” she said, Armenia News reported.

According to Grigoryan, there are no casualties among the employees, the equipment is not damaged.

Today's news came after it was reported on Tuesday that Armenia and Azerbaijan renewed border clashes, with both sides reporting several of their soldiers dead and injured.

NJ’s governor needs to support Armenian-Americans – opinion

In late February, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy posted a tweet that sent shock waves throughout the Armenian-American community in New Jersey. He issued a false statement that extolled the corrupt government of Azerbaijan by recognizing the “Khojaly Genocide” that was both historically inaccurate and ill-timed.

By doing so, the governor essentially inserted himself into the ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of historical Armenia.

Since the fall of 2020, Azerbaijan, a country led by the petro-dictator Ilham Aliyev, has escalated tensions with Armenia by launching an illegal war and attacking the territorial integrity of Armenia.

For the more than 100,000 Armenians living in New Jersey, they see these latest acts of aggression by Azerbaijan, one of the most repressive and autocratic countries in the world, as a continuation of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, when more than 1.5 million Armenians were systemically exterminated by the Ottoman Turks.

It is an event that both the Turkish and Azerbaijani governments deny to this day. They see it as an existential threat to their very existence.

It is also why Armenian-Americans in New Jersey found the governor’s use of the word “genocide” to describe what took place at Khojaly as offensive and inaccurate. For starters, the governor is wrong.

What happened in Khojaly 31 years ago has been twisted and distorted by the Azerbaijani propaganda machine over time. For most of 1991 and 1992, Azerbaijan was using Khojaly as a staging ground to launch rocket attacks against Armenian civilian targets. The continuous shelling almost led to the near-total destruction of Stepanankert, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh.

As part of an attempt to neutralize enemy fire, Armenian self-defense forces attacked Khojaly on February 25, 1992, at 11:30 p.m. But before doing so, Armenian forces warned the civilian inhabitants of Khojaly of an imminent attack and even provided a safe corridor for them to leave. The Azeri authorities did nothing to protect their own people.

What followed has been a relentless anti-Armenian campaign that lacks any evidence of “genocide” and blatant subterfuge by the Azerbaijan government. It’s straight out of the Azeri playbook of using the pretext of historical revisionism to rewrite and reimagine the past. Khojaly is just another example of that strategy.

To support this false narrative, Azerbaijan used images of mutilated and dead bodies as proof for “genocide,” which subsequently turned out to be fake and doctored photos. There is even evidence that Azerbaijan moved and transported dead bodies to the region in an attempt to inflate the number of casualties.

There is no denying that deaths happened on both sides, but to suggest that a genocide occurred is an insult to Armenians who have fought for decades to have their own genocide recognized by the United States. Genocide is a term that should not be used loosely. It is one of the many reasons why the governor needs to set the record straight and remove his tweet and apologize for his misleading statement.

Not only is Gov. Murphy on the wrong side of history but his statement was issued at a time when the government of Azerbaijan continues to persecute Armenians. Since early December, Azerbaijan has implemented a blockade to the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, which has rapidly become a humanitarian crisis.

By cutting off the only link to the outside world, Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh have been denied much needed supplies like food, medicine, and heating gas, as temperatures drop to freezing levels.

This burgeoning humanitarian situation has led Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Pope Francis to voice their concern for the 120,000 Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh, including 30,000 children who are being deprived of basic human rights. And last month, the UN’s International Court of Justice ordered Azerbaijan to end its blockade.

This blockade follows a troubling pattern of Azeri aggression towards Armenians and is part of their ongoing campaign to ethnically cleanse Armenians from the region.

Gov. Murphy should also be concerned about recent statements from President Aliyev that reflect his true intentions. In recent speeches and statements, Aliyev has unequivocally claimed that Armenia is their historical land while calling Armenia “Western Azerbaijan” and even saying that Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, belongs to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan is promoting a culture of hate and fear and is breeding a whole new generation of anti-Armenian sentiment. It’s dangerous. It’s irresponsible. It needs to stop.

But in many ways, the governor’s tweet in praising Azerbaijan over a fabricated history, is only perpetuating this type of hate and validating their actions. Whether Murphy issued the statement directly or was made by a member of his staff, the governor needs to take responsibility and ownership of what was said and know that it can be misinterpreted and used for nefarious purposes.

Armenian-Americans have played a large role in New Jersey’s history and have contributed significantly to the cultural and business fabric of the state. That is why many of them were surprised and taken aback by the governor’s statement.

Armenian-Americans in New Jersey are still grappling with the effects of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. And for many of them, New Jersey became a place where they found refuge and were welcomed with open arms. They need to know if New Jersey is still that place.

They need to know if their governor still has their back. They need him to retract his statement and issue an apology. They need him to hold Azerbaijan accountable – not praise them. Only then, will he be able to regain trust with one of the state’s most vibrant and prosperous communities.

Narine Asatryan, the woman who threw an umbrella at Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Malishka village of Vayots Dzor Province on Tuesday, has been charged. Gor Abrahamyan, spokesperson of the Investigative Committee of Armenia, informed this in an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Abrahamyan noted that the charge was brought under the Criminal Code article on "Interfering with the lawful service or political activities of an official."

The respective preventive measure is prohibition of absence from the country.

According to the police statement on this incident, this 47-year-old woman tried to use violence against PM Pashinyan by throwing an umbrella at him. The woman was detained and then released. Criminal proceedings have been launched into this incident. But Pashinyan does not have any status in this proceeding yet.

Narine Asatryan was displaced from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). She had resettled in Berdzor (Lachin) town with her family in the 2000s. The family did not leave Berdzor until August last year, when Berdzor was finally handed over to Azerbaijani control. Asatryan now lives on rent in Malishka village with her husband and seven children.

Dozens of Tegh families in difficult social situation

Armenia –

As a result of the invasion and illegal presence of Azerbaijani armed servicemen in Armenia, dozens of families of Syunik's Tegh Municipality found themselves in a difficult social situation. Arman Tatoyan, former Republic of Armenia Human Rights Defender, director of Tatoyan Foundation, wrote on his Facebook.

"Behind every corner of our Motherland is human destiny, parental home and family.

As a result of the invasion and illegal presence of Azerbaijani armed servicemen in Armenia, families of Syunik Tegh community found themselves in a difficult social situation. People are deprived of their lawful pastures, the opportunity to earn a family income. About 4 dozen families have certificates of ownership, but cannot even come close to their lands,” Tatoyan said.

“I continue to insist that the demands to remove them and provide a security zone for the protection of the civilian population are absolutely justified," he added.

Zakharova responds to Armenia parliament majority faction secretary: They probably mistranslated it to him

Armenia –

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian foreign ministry, responded to Armenian parliament ruling majority "Civil Contract" Faction secretary Artur Hovhannisyan’s statement that he does not understand why Russia is demanding an explanation from Armenia regarding the information about Armenia’s participation in the US-led military exercises in Europe.

"It should be noted that he is obviously relying on the wording he invented and is surprised by it, or they mistranslated it to him," the Telegram channel of the Russian foreign ministry reads in this regard.

We present below the respective question and Zakharova's answer to it at Wednesday’s press briefing.

Question: Armenia refused to conduct CSTO military exercises in its territory. At the same time, it has decided to participate in military exercises of NATO countries. How does the Russian foreign ministry assess such a position of Yerevan? Can this move by Yerevan be considered [an] unfriendly [move] that could worsen the bilateral ties between our countries?

Answer: I will not repeat, and draw your attention to the fact that I just commented on the topic of Armenia and CSTO. As for NATO, the alliance continues the practice of actively engaging partner countries in [military] maneuvers. It does this through the implementation of NATO standards, and tries to transform the defense complex of these countries, to gain leverage over their internal and external political processes, the course of development of the armed forces.

First of all, it refers to the post-Soviet territory, which is a real field of geopolitical confrontation with Russia for NATO. The US and its allies are trying to discredit the collaboration of the countries of the region with our country. They drag them into various formats of interaction that are anti-Russian and sometimes Russophobic in nature. Such actions of NATO lead to the destabilization of the situation, the increase of conflict potential, and the creation of new dividing lines in various regions.

We have requested an official explanation from the Armenian partners regarding their participation in the NATO military exercises. Our reaction [to it] will be clear after receiving the response. Undoubtedly, Yerevan's refusal to hold CSTO [military] maneuvers in its territory is regrettable and does not contribute to the enhancement of regional security. They probably mistranslated it to Artur Hovhannisyan.
