YEREVAN, JULY 8, ARMENPRESS. More international efforts are needed to prevent ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, ARMENPRESS reports, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan said during the panel discussion held within the framework of the Dubrovnik Conference.

Mirzoyan emphasized that Armenia is conducting negotiations with Azerbaijan in good faith, but in the negotiation process and on the ground, it still faces threats and real use of force. "We have a blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh. We need more international efforts to prevent ethnic cleansing," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

Ararat Mirzoyan stressed that there is an issue of security and rights of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is everyone's issue. "The people of Nagorno-Karabakh are facing a real danger of ethnic cleansing. If the world order that we are talking about, that we dream about, is based on values, then humanity has a chance. Let me repeat once more: we are talking about human lives. Now we are talking about world unrest, violations of international law, but we have been talking about it since 2020, when Azerbaijan started an aggressive war in Nagorno-Karabakh, after which it invaded the sovereign territory of Armenia several times," said the Armenian FM.

Armenpress: The criminal prosecution of kidnapped Armenian servicemen by Azerbaijan is a gross violation of international law. HRD

 17:48, 8 July 2023

YEREVAN, JULY 8, ARMENPRESS. Armenian human rights defender Anahit Manasyan issued a statement regarding the condemnation of two Armenian servicemen captured from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia by the armed forces of Azerbaijan. "Armenpress" presents the statement of the human rights defender of RA.
"The court on grave crimes in Azerbaijan has convicted two Armenian servicemen who were ambushed and captured by the Azerbaijani armed forces in the sovereign territory of Armenia. They have been found guilty of allegedly violating various articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and have been sentenced to 11 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
According to the information received from the parents and relatives of the two servicemen of the Armenian Armed Forces, Mr. Karen Ashot Ghazaryan (conscript) and Harutyun Yurik Hovakimyan (contract serviceman) were captured by the Azerbaijani armed forces on May 26, 2023, in the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia.
According to the information registered by the Human Rights Defender's Office, they were transferring nutrition and water supplies to the combat positions of the Armenian Armed Forces and were captured by the Azerbaijani side in the middle of the combat positions located between the Chakaten and Shikahogh villages of the Republic of Armenia.
The Human Rights Defender, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, emphasizes that the information registered by the Human Rights Defender's Office shows that the actions of the Azerbaijani authorities in capturing Armenian servicemen from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, then charging them with false charges and subjecting to an unfair trial constitute a gross violation of international law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. These actions are contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the requirements of international humanitarian law, including the Third Geneva Convention.
The Human Rights Defender specifically highlights that Armenian servicemen illegally kept in Azerbaijan should have the status of Prisoners of War, and their detention, criminal prosecution, and proceedings are gross violations of international humanitarian law.
These servicemen were taken captive in the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia during an incessant armed conflict. International humanitarian law is warranted in such situations, regardless of the reasons or intensity of the confrontation.
Moreover, the policy of Armenophobia propagated by the Azerbaijani authorities further confirms the unlawfulness of the criminal proceedings. It is evident that the fundamental rights of the Armenian prisoners of war are endangered in these circumstances.
The Human Rights Defender highlights that the Armenian captives still held in Azerbaijan are exposed to a constant risk of torture, degrading and inhuman treatment, as evidenced by the information registered by the Human Rights Defender's Office.
The Office of the Human Rights Defender is currently summarizing and studying the above-mentioned information and will present it to relevant international organizations, other stakeholders, and competent state bodies".

Turkish Press: Historical Armenian Church in Türkiye’s Kayseri awaits maintenance

DAILY SABAH
Turkey – July 6 2023
Cracks, fractures, and plaster spills are seen in Armenian Surp Boğos Bedros Church, Kayseri, Türkiye, . (IHA Photo)

The renowned Armenian Surp Boğos Bedros Church in the Tomarza district of central Anatolian Kayseri needs maintenance to fix severe cracks, fractures, and plaster spills affecting the roof and the bottom of its columns and walls.

Constructed in 1837 using the traditional masonry technique, the church stands in the heart of Tomarza's bustling bazaar. However, following a tumultuous period during which it served as a warehouse and later a movie theater, the historical site has fallen into a state of disrepair.

The lower sections of the church's columns and walls have suffered substantial cracks, fractures, and plaster spills. Besides, grass and wild trees have overtaken the roof, causing damage to the church's eaves moldings, resulting in breakage and cracks because of neglect and lack of care. Regrettably, there have been no restoration efforts for this endangered landmark so far.

Local residents of Tomarza highlighted the church's 18th-century origins and emphasized its significance as an invaluable cultural heritage site with remarkable historical and architectural features. "Previously used as a warehouse and later converted into a cinema, the church now stands abandoned," one of the residents said.

"Our utmost desire is to restore this church, even though its epitaph has been lost, and transform it into a thriving tourist attraction. Despite its current state of disrepair, traces of period frescoes can still be admired on the walls. Regrettably, the church has become a nesting ground for pigeons," said another local.

"This church in Tomarza is a must-visit for both local and foreign history enthusiasts. We earnestly hope that restoration efforts will be undertaken before it succumbs to irreversible damage," he added.

Zakharova: “People of Karabakh may be left without goods and medicine”

July 6 2023

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said today that Moscow is extremely concerned about the increased violations of the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh and the ongoing blockade of the Lachin corridor.

“The humanitarian situation in the region is deteriorating. Regrettably, we have to state that due to the cessation of supply, the population of Karabakh may be left without stocks of food, essential goods and medicines,” the diplomat said.

“This goes against the trilateral agreements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. We call on Baku and Yerevan to resolve all issues exclusively through political and diplomatic means. We call on the Azerbaijani side to unblock the Lachin corridor, ensure the unhindered movement of citizens, vehicles, and cargo along it for civilian purposes,” Zakharova said.

She also noted that Igor Khovaev, special representative of the Russian Foreign Minister on the issues of supporting the normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan, will soon visit the region.

“Trilateral meetings are also possible,” Zakharova said.

The diplomat stressed that Russia “welcomes the progress made in the course of talks in the United States on the development of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”

“We welcome all positive steps in this direction,” Maria Zakharova added.
