Azerbaijanis filmed vandalizing Armenian church in Karabakh

Feb 8 2022

PanARMENIAN.Net – Azerbaijani soldiers have been filmed vandalizing the St. Astvatsatsin Church in the Nagorno-Karabakh village of Karin Tak, which came under Baku’s control in the Second Karabakh War in fall 2020.

Fresh footage published online shows that the Lord’s table at the altar of the church has been broken, the inside of the church is in a state of disarray, while Azerbaijani soldiers are moving between the sacristies and climbing onto the altar.

In addition, the Azerbaijanis are heard saying a Muslim prayer inside the Christian site of worship and desecrating the Armenian cultural heritage, Monuments Watch said.

In was reported days earlier that Azerbaijan’s government has announced that it intends to erase Armenian inscriptions on religious sites in the territory that came under Baku’s control in the 2020 war.

Concerns about the preservation of cultural sites in Nagorno-Karabakh are made all the more urgent by the Azerbaijani government’s history of systemically destroying indigenous Armenian heritage—acts of both warfare and historical revisionism. The Azerbaijani government has secretly destroyed a striking number of cultural and religious artifacts in the late 20th century. Within Nakhichevan alone, a historically Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani forces destroyed at least 89 medieval churches, 5,840 khachkars (Armenian cross stones) and 22,000 historical tombstones between 1997 and 2006.

Yerevan reacts to Lukashenko’s controversial remarks about Armenia

Feb 8 2022

PanARMENIAN.Net – Yerevan has responded to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s controversial remarks about how Armenia “can’t escape” a union state with Russia and Belarus.

“Armenia can’t escape it. You think anyone needs them? They have already seen it,” Lukashenko said in an interview with Russian journalist Vladimir Solovyov.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry noted in its response that “such a unique geopolitical analysis” of the President of Belarus is primarily aimed at serving his own domestic political agenda and have nothing to do with Armenia and her foreign policy.

The Union State is a supranational organization consisting of Russia and Belarus, “with the stated aim of deepening the relationship between the two states through integration in economic and defense policy.”

Armenia lawmaker defies EU’s €2b pledge for Azerbaijan

Feb 8 2022

PanARMENIAN.Net – Lawmaker from Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party Sona Ghazaryan has slammed the European Union’s €2b financial assistance package for Azerbaijan.

Ghazaryan ‘s comments came just days after Azerbaijan announced plans to erase Armenian traces from medieval churches in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

“I’d like to tell the international community that this policy pursued by Azerbaijan is a challenge to the decision of the UN International Court of Justice on the application of urgent measures, adopted on December 7, 2021,” Ghazaryan said.

“I would especially like to remind our partners in the European Union that they are in fact sending $2.1 billion to a country that stands out not only for its authoritarian regime, but also for its policy of vandalism against its neighbors and the destruction of our historical and cultural monuments.”

Georgia bans export of Armenian matsun through its territory

Feb 8 2022

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Armenian dairy product matsun with such labeling cannot be exported to Russia via Georgia since the latter has registered “matsoni” as its geographical indication.

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.

The Armenian Ministry of Economy said on Monday, February 7 that as in the case of cognac and champagne in France, the name “matsoni” is registered in Georgia as a geographical indication, Armenpress reports.

Armenia has informed dairy producers that the name “matsun” sounds similar to “matsoni” registered in Georgia, which may cause problems when exporting products with this name through the territory of Georgia.

“Back in 2011, the intellectual property authorities of Armenia filed an objection against the registration of the name “matsoni” to the relevant bodies of the European Union and Georgia, arguing that this name can be confused with matsun produced in Armenia. However, the objection was not taken into account,” said the press secretary of the Minister of Economy, Gayane Antonyan.

Antonyan said, however, that the government is taking steps to clarify with the Georgian side the use of geographical indications.

Save Armenian Monuments Decries Azerbaijan’s Heritage Purge Organ

NEW YORKFeb. 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Save Armenian Monuments condemned the Azerbaijani government’s February 3 launch of a “working group of specialists to remove the fictitious traces written by Armenians.”

Azerbaijan announced the heritage purge organ during the visit of top European Union officials Kadri Simson and Olivér Várhelyi, who offered a €2 billion aid package to Azerbaijan.

The purge organ plans to eliminate the entire indigenous epigraphic heritage of the disputed Armenian region of Nagorno-Karabakh that Azerbaijan partially conquered in late 2020. The official justification for the erasure is a state-sponsored conspiracy theory in Azerbaijan that reimagines ancient Armenian monuments as stolen from a long-extinct culture.

“We are nauseated by Azerbaijan’s brazen belligerence to continue its targeting of Armenian sacred sites,” remarked Dr. Virginia Davies, President of Save Armenian Monuments. “The purge organ does not just violate the December 7, 2021 International Court of Justice decision that ordered Azerbaijan to protect Armenian monuments,” continued Davies, “it is tantamount to a declaration of genocide, emboldened by the West’s shameless courting of Azerbaijan despite the latter’s 2020 aggression against Armenians and 1997-2006 state-sanctioned flattening of every Armenian cultural monument in the exclave of Nakhichevan.”

As Hyperallergic art magazine revealed on February 4 in its “Emboldened by Ukraine Crisis, Azerbaijan Escalates its War on Armenian Heritage Sites” report, Azerbaijan appears to be reassured by the €2 billion EU aid package and anticipated USA military aid release, which are perceived as vindications of the 2020 aggression on Nagorno-Karabakh.

Washington and EU are supporting a genocidal dictatorship that thrives on getting away with anti-Armenian crimes, while positioning themselves as defenders of democracies and oppressed peoples elsewhere. This tacit approval of the heritage purge committee is particularly shameful coming from President Joe Biden, who as a candidate criticized Turkey’s military support and mercenary supply for Azerbaijan in 2020 as ‘irresponsible’ but now appears uninterested in following his own advice,” remarked Davies.

Founded in 2020, Save Armenian Monuments LLC, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and subsidiary of the Eastern Prelacy, pursues the sustained safeguarding of in situ Armenian Christian heritage at risk, in particular protection and awareness-building of at-risk churches, monasteries, gravesites, stone crosses, and other sacred sites and structures located in Artsakh and the wider region, through activities including pilgrimages and education. Headquartered in New York, Save Armenian Monuments operates in collaboration with relevant institutional and individual stakeholders.

Azerbaijan Ministry for Culture confirms course of destruction of Armenian cultural heritage

  News.am
Armenia – Feb 8 2022

The Ministry for Culture of Azerbaijan has issued a statement confirming the intention to destroy and “Albanianize” the Armenian cultural heritage in the now Azerbaijani-occupied territories. This statement reads as follows, in particular:

“Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly stated that historical and religious monuments located in our liberated territories constitute part of the Azerbaijani heritage and as such, their protection falls under the responsibility of the Azerbaijani state. Restoration of mosques along with 2 Christian churches, within the large-scale restoration and reconstruction process in Shusha [(Shushi)], can be considered as a vivid example of this. Unlike Armenia, Azerbaijan does not discriminate its historical and cultural heritage based on religious and ethnic ground and is committed to its obligations under international conventions, including the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. It should be added that, the Ministry for Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan is currently conducting relevant monitoring procedures in the liberated territories.

When it comes to the ancient Albanian heritage in the liberated Azerbaijani territories, it should be noted that a working group has been set up to study this heritage. The working group, comprised of both local and international experts, will monitor and study this Christian heritage, subject to the security conditions on the ground. Should any falsifications be identified, they will be documented with the participation of international experts and presented to the international community. We would also like to recall that any alterations on the historical and cultural heritage, as well as altering their origin runs in contradiction with the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention.”
