In Armenia, Making Orange Wine is Personal

For many Armenian winemakers, making orange wine is personal. The process revives ancient traditions when almost every household made its own wine in a huge karas, or amphora made of terra cotta, and then sealed it with beeswax and buried it in the ground to age.

This is the method that Trinity Canyon Vineyards, located in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor region, adopted in 2014 to make its Ancestors’ Orange Wine. After conducting thorough research in nearby villages, Artem Parseghyan, Trinity Canyon’s winemaker, learned that orange wine was historically referred to as yellow or amber because the orange fruit wasn’t local. He also learned it was believed to have health benefits, according to the writings of 15th-century physician Amirdovlat of Amasia.

Ancestors’ Orange Wine uses Voskehat, an indigenous variety that’s at least 3,500 years old. Also called Golden Berry, Voskehat has a yellow-white or amber hue with small brown spots, and has aromas of fresh white fruits with hints of citrus and freshly cut grass.

To make his wine, Parseghyan ferments Voskehat in 100-year-old karas above ground, which he believes makes it easier to control the process, for anywhere from two or three days to two or three weeks. He then transfers the must, grape skins, seeds and juice to another, beeswax-coated karas that he buries underground.

“Clay gives special flavors such as minerality, earthiness,” says Parseghyan. “The shape of the vessel is important. It creates certain turbulence during the production process.” He believes the karas’ shape allows for subtler extraction of tannins from the grape skins and seeds.

Despite Armenians’ long history of using karas for food and wine storage, older vessels can be hard to find. Manufacturing karas halted from 1928 through the 1980s, during the years of industrialization enforced by the Soviet Union. Modern Armenian winemakers who want to use original karas to ferment their wines must seek them out, and clean and restore them.

Also located in Vayots Dzor is Zorah Wines, which bottled its first vintage in 2010. Founder Zorik Gharibian remembers how, a few years ago, he knocked down a wall in an elderly woman’s home in Yeghegitz village to find three enormous karases. (He later rebuilt her wall.)

He uses those reclaimed vessels to age wines like Heritage Chilar, an orange wine made with Chilar, another indigenous Armenian variety also known as Fox’s Tail because of its cylindrical-conical bunches. Heritage Chilar is fermented and aged in karas that Gharibian buries three-quarters of the way in the ground, as per 3,000-year-old traditions, with 60–90 days of skin contact and then nine further months in the bottle.

“After many years of working with the karases, I find this to be the best way,” says Gharibian. The portions buried in the earth keep temperatures stable, while the above-ground exposure “creates a disparity of temperature within the karas which creates natural movement in the wine while aging.”

Since all are handmade, each karas has a different size and thickness. Gharibian only uses natural yeast, and there’s very mild filtration before bottling.

Another winemaker in the region, Avag Harutyunyan of Maran Wines, dug through ancient manuscripts like the 14th-century text Girk vastakoc  (Book of Farm Labors) to collaborate with others on techniques for karas use and maintenance.

Maran’s Malahi Amber wine is the result of genetic studies from the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, which identified a long-lost Armenian grape variety, White Areni. Maran Wines harvests these white wine grapes when they are very ripe, destems and crushes them, and then transfers them to ferment and macerate in karases for two to six months.

Khme Wines, a label that only produces orange wine, launched in Stepanakert, Artsakh in 2019. Khme, which translates into “drink up,” harvests its grapes from Amaras Valley in Artsakh and the Vayots Dzor region in Armenia. Its wine is made in 140-year-old karases and features indigenous varieties Voskehat and Khatoun Kharji as well as Rkatsiteli, a variety that was planted across the Caucasus during the Soviet era and mainly used to make brandy.

Reclaiming these varieties and production methods is significant, says Anush Gharibyan O’Connor, a wine consultant and executive director of GiniFest, an annual Armenian wine festival in Los Angeles. The new phase of orange wine in Armenia offers “something different, such as terroir, grape aging and winemaking techniques,” she says. It’s a novel approach with ancient roots.

Erdoğan seeking ‘quick fix’ with overtures to Israel, Armenia, analyst says

Feb 9 2022

Turkey’s efforts to normalise ties with Armenia and Israel are a tactical shift in diplomacy rather than a value-based commitment to cordial relations, said Aykan Erdemir, senior director of the Turkey Program at the Foundation for the Defence of Democracies (FDD) in Washington D.C.

Turkey and Armenia have appointed special envoys for re-establishing diplomatic relations, broken since the early 1990’s, and re-opening their common border. They held their first meeting in Moscow on Jan. 14. Israeli President Isaac Herzog may visit Ankara next month after Tel Aviv cautiously welcomed Turkey’s calls to repair ties ruptured by regional policy differences and the Palestinian problem.

“Erdoğan is hoping that his outreach to Israel and Armenia will have a major impact on what he sees as very effective lobby, namely the Armenian lobby and the Jewish lobby, in Washington and the U.S. in general,” Erdemir said in the latest broadcast of Ahval’s ’12 Minutes’ podcast series.

He is hoping that this could be a quick fix to Turkey’s problems, Erdemir said.

The Turkish approach is very naive because it does not take into consideration the complexities of policy making in Washington, he said.

“The Erdoğan government’s tactical shifts, that rest on a very naive and simplistic understanding of how complex foreign and security decisions are taken in the United States will, I think, continue to pose an obstacle to their policy design and implementation,” Erdemir said.

Turkey’s attempts at normalisation with Armenia and Israel are based on President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s models for reaching out to Egypt then to the United Arab Emirates and finally Saudi Arabia, Erdemir said.

Erdemir said Turkey’s diplomatic efforts across the region are based on the following major factors. Firstly, Erdoğan recognised that Turkey was becoming increasingly isolated in the eastern Mediterranean, which created both a diplomatic and military problem. Turkey is also seeking more access to export markets and to attract more investment from abroad, particularly from Gulf countries, after a financial meltdown, Erdemir said.

Ankara believes that the international perception of its conflicts with Armenia and Israel undermine its image and diplomatic sway both in Washington and in Brussels, so it also hopes that attempts at normalisation will serve to bolster Turkey’s soft power and to narrow diplomatic deficits in both capitals, Erdemir said.

Turkey and Armenia made a first attempt at normalising diplomatic relations in 2009, signing protocols in Zurich, Switzerland. The documents, which envisaged establishing formal diplomatic ties, opening the border, and forming a joint commission to study the Armenian Genocide, were not never ratified by the two countries’ parliaments.

Aliyev continues efforts to erase Armenian history – Rep. Pallone

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev continues his efforts to erase Armenian history, says Congressman Frank Pallone..

“Aliyev continues his efforts to erase Armenian history, despite an International Court of Justice ruling that Azerbaijan must not desecrate or destroy Armenian cultural sites,” Rep. Pallone said in a twitter post.

“The international community must halt his actions and hold him accountable for these blatant violations,” he added.

Azerbaijan’s government has announced plans to erase Armenian inscriptions on religious sites in the occupied territories of Artsakh.

It justifies the move by arguing that the churches in fact were originally the heritage of Caucasian Albania, an ancient kingdom once located in what is now Azerbaijan. The theory has long been propagated by nationalist Azerbaijani historians and embraced by the current government in Baku.

CSTO will provide military assistance if Armenia applies for – Stanislav Zas

Public Radio of Armenia
Feb 9 2022

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will provide military assistance if Armenia applies for, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas declared today, Izvestia reports.

“If there is such an appeal, all our emergency response centers, mechanisms will be put into action,” he said on the sidelines of the Valdai Club conference.

Zas said that a crisis response working group was created within the framework of the CSTO after the peacekeeping operation in Kazakhstan.

“We have now created a working group and are carefully studying this first practical experience of ours, all our actions. We will test, first of all, the crisis response system. We need to be able to quickly and effectively use the existing potential in any conditions and at any point in the zone of CSTO responsibility,” he said.

According to the Secretary General, the operation in Kazakhstan showed the effectiveness of existing mechanisms. “We got the first practical experience and made sure that the forces and means that our organization possesses, and the mechanisms for their use that have been created over 20 years, they really function and allow us to solve the tasks that our organization faces,” he said.

Turkey investigates DJ performance at Sumela monastery

Middle East Eye
[Tourism ministry sent inspectors to investigate the incident as
Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I contacted the minister with a letter]
By Ragip Soylu
Feb. 9, 2022
The Turkish government has launched an investigation into local
officials who permitted the shooting of a music video at the former
Orthodox Christian Sumela monastery in the northeastern province of
Trabzon, a senior official told Middle East Eye on Wednesday.
A video released on social media over the weekend showed a DJ
performing in the courtyard of the cliffside ruins.
Greece’s foreign ministry on Monday protested the footage and called
on Turkish authorities "to do their utmost to prevent such acts from
being repeated" and to respect the site, a candidate for Unesco's list
of world heritage sites.
The Turkish official told MEE that Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I
has sent a letter to Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy,
raising his concerns regarding the use of the former monastery, now a
museum under restoration.
“We have sent inspectors to Trabzon to look into this incident,” the
official said.
Euronews reported that the makers of the video clip had defended their
decision, arguing the footage was shot in order to promote Sumela as a
tourist attraction and that Turkish authorities had granted permission
for the event.
Turkish news wire DHA reported on Tuesday that DJ Ahmet Senterzi and
his colleagues Volkan Gunduz and Cengiz Can Atasoy shot a music video
at the monastery with a team of 30 people. The team established a
sound and music system and set up cameras.
Murat Cavga, the chairman of Tourism Managers and Travel Agencies
Association, known as TISAD, criticised the move in remarks to Turkish
media, saying that the DJ performance had no benefit to tourism as the
venue is a former monastery which is open for prayers once a year. “It
is mindblowing," he said.
Founded in the 4th century, Sumela is a monastic complex built into a
sheer cliff above the Black Sea forest in Trabzon.
It was long ago stripped of its official religious status and operates
as a museum administered by the Ministry of Culture in Turkey.
Thousands of tourists and Orthodox Christian worshippers journey to
the monastery annually.
In 2010, Turkish authorities allowed the first Orthodox liturgy since
ethnic Greeks were expelled in 1923 as part of a population exchange
between Greece and Turkey.
The Sumela monastery was shut for restoration in 2015 and reopened to
tourists in 2019.
A liturgy to mark the Feast Day of the Virgin Mary was allowed in 2020 and 2021.

Kalkan: Turkey, PDK target leaders of Kurdish people

Hawar News Agency
Feb. 8, 2022
[A member of the Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Workers' Party
(PKK), Duran Kalkan, confirmed that Turkey, in cooperation with the
Kurdistan Democratic Party, targets the leaders of the Kurdish people,
with the aim of intimidating them, so the leaders should organize the
struggle more deeply.]
A member of the Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Workers Party
(PKK), Duran Kalkan, indicated that whoever stands in the face of the
terrorist organization ISIS must stand in the face of the fascist
coalition of the Justice and Development Party and the National
Movement (AKP-MHP), which is the other side of the terrorist
organization in terms of their mentality, their approach, and their
lives.
Participating in the special program on Haber TV, a member of the
Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Duran
Kalkan, spoke about the legendary struggle by the leader Abdullah
Ocalan in the conditions of absolute isolation imposed on him in his
prison in Imrali.
Duran Kalkan said: "The regime of severe isolation continues against
the leader Abdullah Ocalan, and many institutions have put this issue
on their agenda on the basis of bringing about some change, but
nothing has changed. Everyone ignores this violation of international
laws and rights. The dominant regimes are satisfied with this, and the
isolation imposed in Imrali is evidence of the international
conspiracy, against the leader Ocalan. this is evidence of the
repressive and fascist regime directed against the Kurdish people.
They think they will force leader Ocalan to say things against his will
He continued: "They have closed the doors of Imrali so that the leader
does not communicate. Turkey speaks on his behalf, opponents and heads
of parties. In its struggle for the freedom of the leader Ocalan,
this is impossible. Our people have shown a position about it, it
should be further strengthened until the leader is liberated.
Also, this position shows that the system in Imrali is a political
detention system, they resort to such a system because they are unable
to force the leader Ocalan to say what they want, and this is the best
evidence that the Turkish state does not enjoy rights and laws and all
its laws are false, and it has political goals, and it also has a
political detention system."
They confronted the policy of denial, execution and extermination
During his speech, Duran Kalkan reminded that they are on the 23rd
anniversary of the international conspiracy on February 15, and said:
"We struggle against it. Our people called this day the 'Black Day'.
As for the leader Ocalan, he called it the day of the 'Kurd
Extermination'." I salute the continuous historical resistance that
the leader Ocalan has been waging for 23 years against the regime of
isolation, and I also remember our heroic martyrs who turned into a
ring of fire under the slogan "You will not be able to block our sun",
with all respect and gratitude.
It is not possible to define the February 15 plot without addressing
the October 9 plot, as this plot was launched with the aim of
eliminating Leader Ocalan through the conspiracy, and because they
were unable to achieve it, they resorted to the February 15 plot by
the fascist Turkish state; Our people and our leader have been waging
a legendary struggle against this regime of isolation and torture for
23 years, and this means that the policy of extermination and denial
has been confronted, and this is what constituted the third
resurrection of the leader, and made the whole world recognize his
truth, and turned him into the leader of all the oppressed. This fact
is gradually expanding and It will be the biggest event of the
twenty-first century."
Those who struggle against ISIS should also fight against its supporters
A member of the Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Workers' Party,
Duran Kalkan, also evaluated the struggle against ISIS, saying: "I
salute the heroic struggle that our people have been waging against
ISIS for 8 years, and I remember the martyrs of this struggle with all
respect and appreciation in Al-Hasakah, they represent the hope of
humanity, the will and the future of humanity.
There are some forces that must do something concrete about ISIS.
The United States, for example, says that Abdullah Qardash was killed
after killing Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, meaning that the two leaders of
the terrorist organization ISIS were eliminated, so where did ISIS
come from? This should be well defined. They support each other.
Where were Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Abdullah Qardash hit? In an area
under the control of the Turkish state, and on its borders; Well, is
it not the responsibility of the Turkish state and the alliance of the
Justice and Development Party and the National Movement? Why don't
they say anything, just say they are doing us harm in our struggle
against ISIS, this is not acceptable.
The attacks that were launched in al-Hasakah did not target the
prison, which contained ISIS terrorists, but rather were attacks to
eliminate the Autonomous Administration and occupy the entire area.
These attacks were not carried out with force and normal preparations,
but behind them was a large force that prepared itself greatly.
Abdullah Qardash death was a response to these attacks in general.
Those who support these attacks are the alliance of the Justice and
Development Party, the National Movement and the Turkish State.
Everyone must realize this fact, and those who claim to be struggling
against ISIS must struggle against those who support and finance ISIS
and follow its ideology, which is the alliance of the Justice and
Development Party, the National Movement and the Turkish State, and so
on. Goes in the wind and meaningless.
They launch attacks in response to the defeat of the terrorist
organization ISIS
The terrorist organization ISIS attacked the city of Al-Hasakah on
January 20, but was defeated. Complicated with the victory of the
Justice and Development Party, the nationalist movement, and the
defeat of the terrorist ISIS means their defeat, as the attack
targeted the three areas in which ISIS was defeated in 2014, and this
is the reason for its revenge. Kurdish genocide.
They use the KDP as a tool to achieve their ends
Turkey uses the KDP as a tool in its hand. Did Nechirvan Barzani
understand something of Kurdishism? Does he not know that the people
will hold him accountable? Do you think the Turkish state is that
strong? Are the Kurds worthless to this extent? Who accepts this?
This is clear and I will not talk about this subject much.
They raise discussions about civilians and they themselves bomb them
Another thing I'd like to point out is: Those who stand up the
attacks, they discuss the attack on civilians, of course civilians
shouldn't be hit, well is it legitimate to attack non-civilians? What
is this logic? What is their right? And what is the right of the
Turkish army to attack the protection forces in northern and eastern
Syria, the Makhmour Protection Forces, and the Shingal Protection
Forces? It must be properly discussed, they are supposed to resist
the attacks but they resist them in this way, and this resistance is
an obsolete position, they also say that it is not civilian but
military, attacks are launched on soldiers in civilian clothes, so
this approach should be criticized and closely condemned, All the
attacks carried out are fascist genocide attacks, most of the attacks
on organized forces, resistance and freedom are brutal attacks, these
forces are the most valuable values, they must be solidarity and
supported.
We must strengthen our organization and step up our struggle
The Kurdish people everywhere showed a strong reaction, and it must
be continued, as the Turkish occupation, through these attacks and
intelligence operations carried out by the Kurdistan Democratic Party,
wants to identify the targeted places and people, and strike them
through modern military techniques to eliminate them and intimidate
the people. This matter has become clear, Then the leaders must be
careful and defend themselves better, and the people should also
benefit from this and beware of it, and the ranks of the organization
and the resistance must be developed in creative ways.
Makhmour people will not allow such violations. Such attacks have
been carried out dozens of times against this people, but they do not
realize who this people is. It is the people of Botan. The people of
Şengal and Rojava have lived and recognized the will of freedom. The
Turkish occupation with its attacks cannot break the will of this
resistant people.

Azerbaijani press: Foreign theory about Baku’s stance on Karabakh religious sites biased

By Laman Ismayilova

Baku has dismissed as biased some foreign media reports drawing false conclusions from Culture Minister Anar Karimov’s remarks on religious sites on Azerbaijani territories liberated from occupation during the 2020 war with Armenia.

In a statement published on February 8, the Culture Ministry said: “Azerbaijan always respects its historical and cultural heritage regardless of its religious and ethnic origin. This approach also applies to the historical and cultural heritage in the Azerbaijani territories liberated from Armenian occupation.”

In its statement, the Culture Ministry pointed out that the  Azerbaijani officials have reiterated that the historical and religious monuments located in the liberated territories belong to the Azerbaijani heritage and their protection is Azerbaijan’s responsibility.

“The large-scale restoration and construction of two Christian churches in Azerbaijan’s liberated Shusha city along with mosques can be mentioned as an example. Azerbaijan, as opposed to Armenia, does not make religious and ethnic distinctions in its historical and cultural heritage and is committed to its obligations under international conventions, including the 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (1954 Hague Convention),” the ministry said.

The Culture Ministry is currently monitoring the territories liberated from occupation.

“As for the ancient Albanian heritage in the liberated territories of the country, a working group was created, local and foreign experts were involved to conduct the appropriate monitoring. In case of revealing falsifications, this will be indicated in the documents and presented to the international community consisting of international experts. The change in the ownership of the historical and cultural heritage, its origin is contrary to the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention,” the statement added.

To recap, Azerbaijani Culture Minister Anar Karimov voiced similar views during a press conference in Baku on February 3.

In this regard, United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Chair Nadine Maenza wrote on Facebook account that “we are deeply concerned by Azerbaijan’s plans to remove Armenian Apostolic inscriptions from churches. We urge the government to preserve and protect places of worship and other religious and cultural sites”.

It should be noted that Armenia’s aggression and illegal occupation caused irreparable damages to Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage, which includes thousands of cultural values, including monuments of the world and national importance, mosques, temples, mausoleums, museums, art galleries, sites of archaeological excavations, libraries and rare manuscripts.

Sixty-four of 67 mosques and Islamic religious sites were destroyed, greatly damaged, and desecrated.

More than 900 cemeteries were destroyed and vandalized. The evidence of illegal “archaeological excavations” and so-called “restoration work” was found on the liberated Azerbaijani territories, confirming previous reports of Armenia’s attempts to hide and falsify cultural, historical and scientific evidence, said an official letter addressed by Azerbaijan to the UN.

The letter added that a modern workshop for the production of “ancient” khachkars – Armenian cross-stones was discovered in Azerbaijan’s liberated Kalbajar region.

“These khachkars were oxidized and vinegar was used in the process of artificial aging and then they were buried as ‘indisputable evidence’ of ‘centuries-old Armenian roots’ in this region,” the letter said.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that hundreds of cultural institutions, 927 libraries with a book fund of 4.6 million, 22 museums and museum branches with more than 100,000 exhibits, 4 art galleries, 8 culture, and recreation parks, as well as one of the oldest settlements in the world in Fuzuli region – Azykh Cave, the Shusha State Historical and Architectural Reserve had become victims of the Armenian vandalism.

Occupied by Armenian forces in 1993, Aghdam is known as the Hiroshima of the Caucasus for the level of destruction during the three decades of occupation.

In 2020, as a result of Armenia’s targeted missile attacks on Azerbaijani cities outside the war zone (Ganja, Barda, Tartar, and others), 100 Azerbaijani civilians, including 12 children were killed and over 400 were wounded. International human rights watchdogs Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch also verified the use of banned cluster bombs and rockets by Armenia in its attacks against Azerbaijani cities.

Armenia extensively damaged the ecosystem, wildlife and natural resources in and around occupied Karabakh.
