Armenia is on the brink of losing its independence and statehood, claims Artur Vanetsyan, head of the opposition With Honor faction and Homeland Party, in the meantime stating he and his team are doing everything possible to stop this process.

“Today we have MP mandates and the parliament as our main toolkit, tomorrow the priorities in this toolkit may be different. I understand that there is broad popular discontent with the opposition and some of our compatriots are waiting for us to take more decisive steps. But I want us to objectively assess our capabilities today,” he said in an interview to the Zhoghovurd daily on Friday.

“We have not forgotten our mission, we are using all the means at our disposal,” Vanetsyan said.

The lawmaker stressed the need for an extensive dialogue within society.

“What are we striving for now as a society, as a people?  We need to understand it and shape our vision for the future. Then it will be easier to choose the methods of achieving this goal. I can say on behalf of myself and my team that we will not give up and will continue to fight,” Vanetsyan noted.

The United States mourns the death of the Armenian servicemember Hrach Manasaryan on March 7, the statement issued by the US Mission to the OSCE reads.

The statement said that tragic and avoidable death underscored the need for greater restraint, for forces to distance themselves from each other in the contested border areas, and for intensified diplomatic engagement to find comprehensive solutions to all outstanding issues.

“We urge the parties to make progress on humanitarian issues such as the full release of all remaining detainees, sharing information to identify the fate of missing persons, humanitarian demining, and moving forward on investigations of alleged human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law.

The United States has contributed $5 million in humanitarian assistance this year to support conflict-affected populations in both Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The United States further remains committed to promoting a secure, stable, democratic, prosperous, and peaceful future for the South Caucasus.” the statement reads.

At around 12:40 pm on 7 March, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces opened targeted fire at Armenian combat positions on the western section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. As a result of the shelling two Armenian servicemen were wounded. Contract sergeant Hrach Manasaryan died on the way to hospital.

TheCommittee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution calling for the immediate cancellation of the criminal record of a group of journalists, human rights activists and activists from Azerbaijan, said the head of the Monitoring Group of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, lawyer Khaled Agaliyev, Turan reports.

The document was adopted at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe dedicated to monitoring the execution of ECtHR judgments.

The judgments of the ECtHR indicate that these applicants were persecuted for criticizing the authorities and that Article 18 of the European Convention was violated against them. This means that their persecution was politically motivated.

The applicants were released early from prison, but did not receive rehabilitation, so having a criminal record restricts their rights.

Therefore, the Committee of Ministers called on the Azerbaijani authorities to fully comply with the decisions of the ECtHR regarding these persons.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry welcomes and highly appreciates the almost unanimous adoption of the resolution on the destruction of the cultural heritage in Artsakh, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said.

His remarks came during a conversation with Armenpress. According to him, this decision demonstrates the strong stance of Armenia’s partners represented in the European Parliament.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the destruction of cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh after discussions on Thursday.

The document was supported by 635 deputies, 2 voted against it, and 12 more abstained. The resolution condemns the destruction of the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh and calls for its immediate protection; stresses the universality of cultural heritage as testimony of history, inseparable from the identity of peoples, which the international community has a duty to protect and preserve for future generations; recalls that historical revisionism, defacement and destruction of cultural or religious heritage contradict the judgment of the International Court of Justice of 7 December 2021, as well as the European Parliament resolution of 21 May 2021.

The resolution calls on the EU, UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the OSCE to jointly promote and support efforts to safeguard cultural and religious heritage; calls on the EU and member states to continue to support the work of international organizations aimed at protecting cultural and religious heritage; calls on the Commission to use all available levers to prevent acts of vandalism, destruction or alteration of cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh only deterrent for Azerbaijan, Human Rights Defender states

ArmInfo. The Azerbaijani authorities’ policy is first of all aimed at new ethnic cleansing in and de-Armenianizing Nagorno-Karabakh, Artsakh Human Rights Defender  Gegham Stepanyan said in an interview with Article 3. He stressed  that Azerbaijan pursued an identical policy in the Soviet period as  well.

That policy was aimed at forcing Armenians into leaving  Nagorno-Karabakh and at populating it with ethnic Azerbaijanis, he  said.

“After World War I and after a peace treaty was signed, we could  ensure our security. But the anti- Armenian policy was gaining  momentum in Azerbaijan, spreading to all the areas of life, schools,  with a view to bringing up a generation that would be full of hatred  for Christian Armenians, as the policy has two components – ethnic  and religious. We witnessed that during the 2020 war as well.  Azerbaijanis were killing and torturing captured Armenians,  destroying the Christian heritage. Azerbaijan continued its policy  after the war as well. However, being aware of the fact that  international organizations are informed of their policy, Azerbaijan,  at the presidential level, is claiming the incidents are only  individual,” Mr Stepanyan said. Thus, Azerbaijan is trying to  manipulate international organizations, concealing that it is the  Azerbaijani leadership that is ordering the actions.

Under the circumstances, the Armenian side must present the facts.

Mr Stepanyan also stated that the Russian peacekeepers are the only  deterrent for Azerbaijan in the context of Nagorno-Karabakh’s  security.

“Tension has been defused now as compared with the previous few days.  But it is not a guarantee against recurrence. The Russian  peacekeepers’ presence is the only security guarantee. I am inclined  to think that Azerbaijan could attempt to destabilize the situation  round Nagorno-Karabakh taking advantage of Russia being involved in  the Ukraine conflict,” he said.

Mr Stepanyan also spoke of a grave humanitarian situation in Artsakh  because of the damaged gas main, and the Azerbaijani side has not  allowed repair work to be started for the fourth day.

Appealing to international agencies, Mr Stepanyan stressed that a  territory’s status cannot be an obstacle to the exercise of universal  human rights of the local residents. Artsakh must not be viewed as a  disputed territory, he said.

“It is the Artsakh residents’ rights that must be prioritized. The  global human rights agenda implies universal human rights. And we are  trying to make international organizations hear it. We invited them  to Artsakh both during and after the war. Regrettably, none of them  took a clear stand or visited Artsakh either during or after the  war,” Mr Stepanyan said. But it was their duty to dispatch  fact-finding missions, which was never done, he added.
