Cavusoglu defends Grey Wolves gesture to Armenian protesters

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has explained the Grey Wolves gesture to Armenian protesters in Uruguay.

Speaking to reporters on his way back from Montevideo, the Turkish FM said the authorities had assured that there would be no protesters at the opening of the Turkish Embassy in Montevideo.

“During the opening of our building, they assured our Ambassador that that group would not be allowed in front of it. It was a mistake to have the group approached there even though they had promised,” Cavusoglu said.

He then added that “the demonstrators exhibited ugly attitudes.”

“After these unacceptable and ugly attitudes, we gave the necessary answer. Our action is an insult neither to the Uruguayan authorities, nor to the Uruguayan people nor to the demonstrators,” the Turkish FM said.

Mevlit Cavusoglu flashed the gesture of the ultra-nationalist Grey Wolves group at Armenian protesters in Montevideo on April 23.

Armenia detains 180 protesters demanding PM’s resignation – [multiple links]

Qatar – May 2 2022

Anti-government rallies have been raging since last month over Pashinyan’s speech about the need to sign a peace deal with Azerbaijan.

Police in Armenia have detained 180 anti-government demonstrators who were blocking streets in the capital, Yerevan, to protest against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Protests demanding that Pashinyan step down reignited in Armenia last month, after he spoke in the country’s parliament about the need to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-old conflict over the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but has been under Armenian control since the early 1990s.

In a six-week war in the fall of 2020, Azerbaijan was able to reclaim control over large swaths of land in and around the region before signing a Russia-brokered truce with Armenia.

Pashinyan has faced backlash at home for agreeing to the deal.

As Armenia and Azerbaijan edged closer to reaching a proper peace agreement this year, opposition forces in Armenia have resumed protests against Pashinyan.

Rallies in Yerevan have been held almost daily since April 17.

On Sunday, demonstrators in the centre of Yerevan set up tents for a round-the-clock protest and said they would not leave until Pashinyan and his team step down.

The Interfax news agency reported that barricades were erected from rubbish bins and street benches, and that traffic in France Square, where a major road connects four main avenues of the Armenian capital, stopped.

Demonstrators – including opposition lawmakers – chanted “Armenia without Nikol!” Protest leader and deputy parliamentary speaker Ishkhan Sagatelyan told reporters that protesters would clear the streets by Monday afternoon, so that another rally could gather in the square in the evening.

Some of the detentions on Monday were carried out with the use of force, and journalists covering the protests were reported to have been pushed around by the police.

Police spokespeople told Interfax the demonstrators were detained on charges of refusing to obey police officers.

Artur Vanetsyan: We are also fighting for the future of police officers using force against us

Panorama
Armenia – May 2 2022

Artur Vanetsyan, the leader of the opposition Homeland Party and an MP from the With Honor (Pativ Unem) bloc, urges opposition protesters not to succumb to provocations and refrain from clashes with riot police.

“We are also fighting for the future of the police officers who are using force against us as well as their children, mothers and sisters,” he said in a live video on Facebook.

On Monday morning, the Armenian opposition began a large-scale civil disobedience campaign aimed at ousting Nikol Pashinyan and his cabinet.

“Do your job, blocking streets, schools and universities! Dear students, young people, take to the streets, as this is your struggle. Yerevanites, I am one of you, come out and support us, we have no other way out, we can’t let some scoundrels ruin our traditions. Everything is going to be fine,” Vanetsyan said.

He urged all to join the opposition rally to be held in Yerevan’s France Square at 6pm today.

In the meantime, the acts of civil disobedience continue, the opposition leader said.

The video went viral on social media, drawing strong condemnation from people.

The man was taking part in mass acts of civil disobedience launched by the Armenian opposition on Monday morning in a bid to oust Nikol Pashinyan and his cabinet.

The footage clearly shows one of the police officers repeatedly hitting him in the face and head while detaining him. The policeman is taken away by other protesters.

Opposition party slams violence, hate speech against journalists covering peaceful protests in Yerevan

Panorama
Armenia – May 2 2022

The opposition Homeland Party led by Artur Vanetsyan has denounced the violence and hate speech against journalists reporting on the peaceful anti-government protests in Yerevan.

In a statement on Monday, the party stated that the mass civil disobedience campaign launched in Yerevan and other parts of Armenia on Monday was met with “disproportionate and brutal force” by the incumbent authorities.

“The ruling regime, which is ready to “lower the bar” on issues concerning the security of Artsakh and Armenia, has raised the bar of repressions against its own citizens, unlawfully detaining hundreds of peaceful protesters, including dozens of Homeland Party members,” it said.

“The acts of violence and hate speech against members of the media reporting on the peaceful protests which have been ordered and carried out by some top officials are particularly noteworthy.

“The Homeland Party strongly condemns as unacceptable the unlawful steps of the ruling regime in Armenia,” the party said, drawing the attention of the international community and human rights groups to such incidents and urging law enforcement officers to defy the “illegal orders”.

It stressed that the nationwide movement “cannot be stopped and will definitely succeed.”

Armenian authorities ‘terrified’ by protest campaign, says Kocharyan’s son

Panorama
Armenia – May 2 2022

The incumbent Armenian authorities are “terrified” by the protest campaign launched by the opposition, claims Levon Kocharyan, the son of Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan.

On Monday morning, the country’s leading opposition groups began a large-scale civil disobedience campaign to oust Nikol Pashinyan and his cabinet, blocking traffic in central Yerevan and other parts of the city.

“There is a large group of resolute patriots who are ready to save our country from the current pro-Turkish authorities,” Levon Kocharyan told reporters.

He called attention to the police brutality against protesters as well as the “insolent” behavior of some police officers.

“This indicates that the authorities are terrified and understand that the wave [of protests] is gaining traction. They [the authorities] might be ready to do anything, but I don’t think the police will take such a step. It also depends on the determination and the number of protesters. Experience shows that if they see a lot of people gathered, they take no action, and where there are relatively few people, they behave disrespectfully,” he said.

Kocharyan urged people to actively participate in the acts of civil disobedience.

“The more people join us, the less turmoil there will be. After all, we’re fighting for our country,” he said.
