French lawmakers visit Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. The delegation led by Chair of the France-Armenia Friendship Group in the French Senate Gilbert-Luc Devinaz visited the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan on May 3.

The delegation was accompanied by Head of the Armenia-France Parliamentary Friendship Group Vladimir Vardanyan, the Parliament’s press office said.

The French deputies laid flowers at the Eternal Flame perpetuating the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, observed a one-minute of silence and paid homage to the memory of the Holy Martyrs.

The guests also visited the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, got acquainted with the documents certifying the Genocide.

The Chair of the France-Armenia Friendship Group Gilbert-Luc Devinaz left a note in the Memory Book.

Armenian FM, US Under Secretary of State discuss regional security, stability

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. On May 2, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is on a working visit in the United States, met with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, the Foreign Ministry said in a news release.

The high dynamics of the development of Armenia-US relations was emphasized, and it was noted that since 2019 the cooperation has been raised to a new level of strategic dialogue. The sides expressed willingness to further strengthen the effective cooperation established in various fields, based on the common values of democracy, protection of human rights, rule of law, and the fight against corruption.

Ararat Mirzoyan and Victoria Nuland exchanged views on the issues of regional security and stability. The implementation process of the agreements reached between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Sochi and Brussels was discussed. They also touched upon the situation in Nagorno Karabakh, as well as the process of launching negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on a comprehensive peace agreement. In this context, the Foreign Minister of Armenia stressed the importance of resuming the work of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship.

The humanitarian issues resulting from the 44-day war were discussed, particularly, the immediate release and repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war and other persons held, and the preservation of the Armenian cultural and religious heritage in the territories fallen under the Azerbaijani control.

The Foreign Minister of Armenia presented the recent developments on the Armenia-Turkey normalization process.

Parliament Speaker says opposition’s actions coincide with most important visits and escalation of border situation

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. From the first hours of the opposition’s rally, shots with the use of large caliber weapons were fired by the Azerbaijani armed forces on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan said at a briefing today.

“I have repeatedly stated that the actions of our opposition almost always coincide either with the most important visits (for example, the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin or President of the European Council Charles Michel), or the incidents occurring on the border”, the Speaker said.

The Speaker says he doesn’t consider this as a coincidence, adding that these actions are coordinated in some way.

“I think that our citizens understand well and also perceiving it, they do not join. These rallies are gradually becoming less crowded. As a result of that perception, people do not participate”, Alen Simonyan said.

Armenian military denies accusations on opening fire at Azeri positions

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. The statement released by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense claiming that on May 2 the Armenian military opened fire at Azerbaijani military positions in the eastern section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is false, the Armenian Ministry of Defense said.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense added that the situation on the border is relatively stable and is under the full control of the Armenian military.

‘I came here to strengthen relations between Japan and Armenia’ – Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. This year Armenia and Japan are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. On this occasion, a delegation led by Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Taro Honda arrived in Armenia on a two-day friendly visit.

Mr. Taro Honda told Armenpress that he arrived in Armenia to strengthen the bilateral relations between Japan and Armenia.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Armenia, and I came here to strengthen the bilateral relations between Japan and Armenia. Armenia is very far from Japan, and we are not so well aware of the Armenian culture and traditions, therefore, I hope that we will be able to contribute to the development of bilateral relations through bilateral exchanges”, he said in an interview to Armenpress.

Accompanied by Ambassador of Japan to Armenia Masanori Fukushima, the Japanese delegation visited today the IT center in the village of Ghukasavan in Ararat province. The center has been established with the financial support of the Japanese government.

The diplomatic relations between Armenia and Japan were established on September 7, 1992. Protocol on establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Armenia was signed on that day. So far, Armenia and Japan have signed and adopted 10 statements and agreements.

Armenian Minister of Defense presents regional military-political situation to Kansas National Guard leadership

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan held a meeting with the delegation of the Kansas National Guard led by Adjutant General, Major-General David Weishaar.

Speaking on the Armenia-Kansas military cooperation, the sides were pleased to note that effective actions are implemented in the peacekeeping, military-education, military-medical and other areas.

Papikyan attached importance to the continuous support of the US government, and particularly the Kansas National Guard to the Armenian military reforms.

A number of issues related to the regional security were also discussed.

Papikyan presented the military-political and security situation in the region, views were exchanged on strengthening peace and stability in the current geopolitical situation.

Armenia improves positions in 2022 World Press Freedom Index

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. Armenia improved its positions in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index published by the Reporters Without Borders international organization.

This year Armenia is ranked 51st among 180 countries, but last year it was on the 63rd place.

Among regional countries Georgia is ranked 89th, Azerbaijan- 154th, Russia- 155th and Iran- 178th.

“The main news sources in Armenia are social networks, which two-thirds of the population access daily”, the report said, adding that since the 2018 Velvet Revolution, the media landscape has grown. “Despite a pluralistic environment, the media remain polarized. The country is facing an unprecedented level of disinformation and hate speech”, the report noted.

“The year 2021 was difficult for the media and for journalists because of the Nagorno-Karabakh war, scheduled elections and the pandemic”, stated in the report.

169 protesters detained as of 15:00 in Armenia

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. 155 protesters were detained by police in Yerevan as of 15:00 amid the civil disobedience actions initiated by the opposition, police said.

Another 8 people were detained in Gegharkunik Province and 6 in Ararat Province.

YEREVAN, MAY 3, ARMENPRESS. The delegation led by Minister of Justice of Armenia Karen Andreasyan participated on May 2 in the Armenian-Georgian Legal Forum in Tbilisi, the ministry said in a news release.

Karen Andreasyan and Minister of Justice of Georgia Rati Bregadze delivered remarks during the event, touching upon the importance of cooperation in legal field. The Armenian justice minister thanked his Georgian counterpart for the invitation and said that this forum is an important step for deepening the partnership between the two countries.

“The exchange of experience between the two friendly countries is very important for us, starting from the wonderful idea of probation that contributes to the development of the probation system, as well as a very important experience I would like to talk about – those are the justice houses”, Karen Andreasyan said.

The two ministers also discussed relevant issues during the forum.

The Georgian minister of justice said that the partnering relations between Georgia and Armenia will enter a new stage, and the cooperation with his Armenian counterpart will further strengthen.

During his visit in Georgia, the Armenian minister will also visit the National Archive, the Justice House, the Correctional Service to get acquainted with the Georgian model of their works.
