Asbarez: L.A. City Councilmember O’Farrell Meets With Hollywood Community Leaders

L.A. City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell (center) meets with leaders of the Hollywood Armenian community on May 10

Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell on Tuesday met with the leaders of Hollywood Armenian community organizations and institutions during a gathering at the ACF Hollywood Youth Center.

The occasion was an annual briefing organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Karekin Njdeh chapter where all organizations provide an update on their activities and discuss ways to coordinate service to the community and advance issues of interest.

It was the first time since the pandemic that the gathering was being held and the community leaders welcomed O’Farrell and heard a briefing about the many projects his office has undertaken, especially efforts to ensure safety of residents in Council District 13 during Covid 19 and tackling the homeless crisis.

O’Farrell met with the Board of Trustees of the St. Garabed Armenian Church and Archpriest Vicken Vassilian; the Armenian Relief Society Mayr chapter executive; the Los Angeles Homenetmen chapter executive; the ARF-D Karekin Njdeh chapter board; the chairman and members of the Armenian National Committee of America Hollywood chapter; Maral Tavitian, Principal of the Rose and Alex Pillbos Armenian School, the chairman of whose board Vahe Tashjian was also present, Christine Movsesian, the Director of the ARS Postoyan Pre-School; and the Editor of Asbarez, Ara Khachatourian, who interviewed the councilmember last week. O’Farrell was accompanied by his Field Deputy, George Hakopiants.

These organizations constitute the core of community activities in Little Armenia and function in the school-church-community center compound between Alexandria and Kenmore streets, with Asbarez operating from its headquarters on Vermont Avenue.

After meeting each participant individually, O’Farrell made remarks, briefing the community leaders about his office’s efforts to address the Covid 19 pandemic and some of the services his office and the city council continue to provide as relief measures for the public.

He also announced that the long-awaited and much-anticipated Gateway to Little Armenia is in its final stages of construction, with completion slated before the end of the calendar year. He said that once this structure, which is partially constructed from Tufa stone imported from Armenia, a large unveiling event will be held at its site, located at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and the 101 Freeway exit.

O’Farrell also spoke about the importance of the upcoming June 7 Primary Elections and his campaign for re-election, emphasizing that the stakes in the city are high and residents and constituents need the experience that he brings having served as a member of the L.A. City Council for the past nine years. The ANCA-Western Region has endorsed O’Farrell in his re-election bid.

During a brief question and answer session, O’Farrell heard concerns from Principal Tavitian and Director Movsesian about the ongoing homeless crisis around the school campus and called on the city councilmember to address this issue, which has become an impediment, especially when the school was closed during the pandemic.

“It was very important for the leaders of the Hollywood community to be able to address their concerns directly to Councilmember O’Farrell. We thank him for visiting our center and continuing to be an advocate for the issues important to our community in the LA City Council,” said Suren Seropian, the chair of the ANCA Hollywood chapter.

During the community briefing session, Zohrab Mahdesian, the chairman of the ARF-D Karekin Njdeh chapter informed all participants, who use the ACF Youth Center facilities, about the steps his executive board has taken to enhance security in and around the compound.

Each organizational representative provided a briefing of their respective activities. It was Archpriest Vassilian, who in his remarks, praised each organization and their members for coming together to confront the challenges facing the community and rallied together to provide assistance to Armenia, Artsakh, Lebanon and the local community. He emphasized the need to continue working as one large family to leverage the capabilities of each organization and institution in service of the community and the Armenian Nation.

ANCA Hollywood Ready to Continue Serving and Empowering Community

ANCA Hollywood Chapter

After years of working behind zoom cameras as a result of the pandemic, the Armenian National Committee of America Hollywood chapter, as part of the ANCA-Western Region family, announces that it is resuming its on-the-ground and in person activities, with a slew of important advocacy and empowerment projects.

Not that the pandemic benched the chapter and its efforts. Members of the Hollywood ANCA were active during the early days of the pandemic and joined other local organizations in bringing much-needed assistance to those in need of assistance in our community. The chapter also organized a virtual town hall meeting with elected officials to provide much-needed information and instructions about mandates and precautions.

During the arduous days of the Artsakh War, the Hollywood ANCA also was on the forefront of engaging elected officials and community members to advance calls to action in support of Artsakh and Armenia, including attending the March for Victory and other essential events in our community.

“After collectively tackling the challenges brought on by the pandemic, we are extremely excited to hit the ground running and elevate the advocacy efforts and activism of the Hollywood and Great Los Angeles Armenian communities in service to our national aspirations,” said ANCA Hollywood chairperson Suren Seropian.

Just in the past several months, the Hollywood ANCA chapter was on hand when the ANCA-Western Region board announced its endorsement of Kevin de Leon for Los Angeles Mayor during a press event on the steps of the St. Garabed Armenian Church.

The ANCA Hollywood Chapter also joined the ANCA Board in welcoming L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis on a tour on Little Armenia, where she became acquainted with key community institutions and their leaders as she welcomes Hollywood and Little Armenia to her new district.

Seropian, the Hollywood ANCA chairman, met with the staff of L.A. City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who represents Council District 13, where most of the Armenian community institutions operate. During the meeting, Seropian conveyed some of the community’s concerns, among them the growing homelessness problem in the district and its impact on important facilities, such as the Rose and Alex Pillbos school.

With the ANCA-WR’s endorsement of O’Farrell for reelection, Seropian also pledged the Hollywood ANCA’s support to engage and empower the community to get the vote out for the June 7 Primary.

On May 10, O’Farrell visited the ACF Youth Center, where he met with leaders of community organizations and discussed some of the critical priorities his office is tackling on behalf of its constituents.

With the June 7 Primary Elections just weeks away, the Hollywood ANCA chapter has already begun its voter engagement efforts via the ANCA-WR’s HyeVotes campaign, seeking to register voters and provide information about voting.

The chapter also is looking forward to bringing the community together as the much-anticipated Gateway to Little Armenia project is nearing completion. It plans to work with city officials to advance the project and ensure an unveiling event worthy of Little Armenia and its residents.

UCLA to Host Book Release and Reading of Tenny Arlen’s Book of Armenian Verses

Tenny Arlen

LOS ANGELES—Author Tenny Arlen’s book on Armenian verses entitled “To Say with Passion: Why Am I Here?” («Կիրքով ըսելու՝ ինչո՞ւ հոս եմ») will be presented at the University of California, Los Angeles. The book launch event will take place on Friday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. at UCLA Bunche Hall 10383.

As the first full-length volume of creative literature composed in Armenian by a U.S.-born author after over a century of Armenian-American community development, this is a landmark achievement. It is also one of the first public outcomes of the emphasis that UCLA Narekatsi Chair’s Armenian program places on the concept of Armenian as a living and creative language in diaspora.

Tenny Arlen grew up in San Luis Obispo, CA far removed from any Armenian community. She began her undergraduate studies at UCLA in 2011 with no prior knowledge of Armenian. She took courses in Western Armenian language and literature for two years with Dr. Hagop Kouloujian, and, already a talented writer, soon began to write poetry in Armenian.

In 2013, she graduated from UCLA with highest honors, earning a B.A. in Comparative Literature. In 2015, she was admitted into the University of Michigan’s doctoral program in Comparative Literature with a plan to study French and Armenian symbolist poetry, but she passed away in a car accident in the summer of 2015 before beginning the program.

“To Say with Passion: Why Am I Here?” book cover

Arlen wrote the first drafts of most of the poems collected in this book about 15 to 20 months after beginning Armenian language studies. Her posthumous book of poetry, published by the ARI Literature Foundation (Yerevan, 2021) with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, is entitled: “To Say with Passion: Why Am I Here?” ((«Կիրքով ըսելու՝ ինչո՞ւ հոս եմ»), a line taken from one of her poems, in which the Armenian language speaks about its own existence in the twenty-first century Diaspora. The book was edited by Dr. Kouloujian, who also wrote its afterword, in which he tells of Tenny’s creative journey in Armenian and highlights the book’s significance as the first full-length volume of creative literature written and published in Armenian by a U.S.-born author.

This event is co-sponsored by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation,  UCLA Narekatsi Chair of Armenian Studies, UCLA Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, The Promise Armenian Institute at UCLA, and the UCLA Armenian Students’ Association.

Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event (paperback $15; hardcover $20).

More event details, can be found online.

This is a hybrid event. Those unable to attend in person may register and participate through Zoom.

Blinken Broaches Release of POWs in Talk with Aliyev

Five POWs being held captive in Azerbaijan return to Armenia on Oct. 19, 2021

Azerbaijan faltering on the issue of releasing Armenian prisoners of war was one of the topics discussed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his telephone conversation with President Ilham Alliyev on Wednesday.

According to a State Department read out of the call, the release of POWs still remaining in Azerbaijan was discussed alongside other matters including the pace of progress on the so-called peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“I spoke with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev today about how the United States can continue to support the positive dynamics of the recent peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Blinken wrote on Twitter after his call with Aliyev.

“The parties discussed the forthcoming concrete steps aimed at establishing peace in the South Caucasus, including the delimitation and demarcation of borders, the opening of transport and communication routes, and the release of remaining Armenian prisoners of war,” the State Department said in its read out of the call.

“Secretary of State Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ readiness to assist by cooperating on a bilateral basis, as well as with like-minded partners, including in the status of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair, to assist the countries in finding comprehensive and lasting peace,” added the State Department statement.

While visiting the Netherlands, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan touched on the issue of POWs and the need for Baku to repatriate them to Armenia, saying that Azerbaijani is using the Armenian captives as a bargaining chip to advance its interests in regional developments.

Azerbaijan is trying to make the issue of the return of Armenian captives a subject of trade, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, Clingendael, in response to the question of the meeting participants.

“Unfortunately, despite the November 9, 2020 statement and calls by numerous international organizations, our citizens who were captured during the 44-day war have not been returned, which cannot be understood. This is a practice of using people for political purposes and making them a bargaining chip, which is condemnable,” Pashinyan said in remarks he delivered at the Netherlands Institute of International Relation in Clingendael.

He explained that once discussions on the return of POWs started, Azerbaijan said that they would be released in return for minefield maps of Artsakh. Pashinyan said that Baku was willing to trade POWs for every map Armenian provided. Thus, he said, Yerevan handed over all the maps in its possession in hopes of addressing one humanitarian issue with another.

Pashinyan claimed that Yerevan’s decision to hand over the maps was done as a demonstration of its “dedication to the peace agenda.”

“Until today, at least 38 of our captives are being held in Azerbaijan,” said Pashinyan, emphasizing that during all discussions, Baku attempts to bargain the lives of POWs with other matters that it wants to achieve during the current processes.

“By the way,” Pashinyan added, “the last time it [the barter] was in the presence of the President of the European Council that the Azerbaijani leader promised that he will release another group of captives, but this has not happened so far. I think that it’s impossible to talk about peace by ignoring the humanitarian side of the issue.”

He emphasized the need for the international community to be aware of the current situation and called on them to continue urging Azerbaijan not to make people a subject of political bargaining.

“The war has brought tragedy to many, but I don’t think that the approach of constantly pouring salt on that open wound fits into the 21st century value system,” said Nikol Pashinyan.
