Moscow Analysts See Armenia Becoming ‘Another Ukraine’ – OpEd by Paul Goble

May 17 2022”

Two Moscow commentators who often reflect Kremlin views say that the situation in Armenia is deteriorating to the point that that country in the Southern Caucasus is following the Ukrainian example and thus promises to generate the kind of instability the West will exploit against Russia.

Roman Lugovoy of Versiya says that Armenian Prime Minsiter Nikol Pashinyan came to power via a color revolution and now may lose it in another; but even if Yereven “doesn’t repeat the fate of Kyiv,” Armenia is likely to remain unstable and that instability threatens Russian interests in the region (versia.ru/v-armenii-zreet-novaya-revolyuciya).

And Igor Moiseyev of Svobodnaya Pressa suggests that what is going on shows that “Yerevan has already chosen ‘the Ukrainian path,” a trend that could end with the disappearance of that country. He says that Azerbaijan and Turkey, acting for the West with its interests in weakening Russia, are likely to be the chief culprits in such an outcome.

But the fact that Moscow analysts are drawing analogies between Armenia and Ukraine is worrisome given what Putin has said about the disappearance of Ukraine from the map of the world and what his forces are doing there. Such remarks suggest that some in the Kremlin may now be considering Armenia as the next target for Russian aggression.

Moscow has the forces in place to mount such an attack and may be thinking that it not only could easily overpower the Armenian authorities thus giving it a victory but would enjoy in Yerevan at least some support, especially if the Russian side portrayed what it was doing as a defense of Armenia against Turkic plans.

“Let’s continue the action,” Ashotyan said, addressing the protesters.

The parents and other relatives of Armenian soldiers killed in the 44-day war in Artsakh, who demand criminal charges against Nikol Pashinyan over his handling of the war, staged a protest in Yerevan on Tuesday, blocking the street near the Court of Appeals.

They claim that Pashinyan publicly admitted deliberately sacrificing thousands in his remarks in the parliament on April 13, when he said the war “could have been averted, as a result of which we would have had the same situation, but of course without the casualties.” They submitted a “crime report” to the Prosecutor General’s Office on April 18.

A court hearing on the case was scheduled for Tuesday, but it was postponed to Thursday because prosecutor Arshak Martirosyan did not appear in court.

“During the court hearing, we did not get proper answers. It was postponed since the judge was to hear a motion for arrest in another case set for 11am. Thus, we left the courtroom and blocked the road so that they would come and answer our questions now,” Anahit Manasyan, the relative of fallen soldier Hayk Melikyan, told reporters.

The soldier’s mother, Naira Melikyan, said the previous hearing was also delayed, deploring the conduct of the Prosecutor’s Office and the court.

“Mr. Davtyan, we urge you to wake up,” she said, addressing Armenia’s chief prosecutor, who is currently in Egypt.

The protesters refused to unblock the street until the prosecutor arrived.

He urged all to join a rally to be held in Yerevan’s France Square on Tuesday evening.

Russia MFA: 3+3 format creates favorable conditions for dialogue between Yerevan and Baku, Yerevan and Ankara

NEWS.am
Armenia – May 17 2022

The regional consultative platform “3+3” (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia plus Russia, Iran and Turkey) established in December 2021 is a needed and perspective mechanism, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said.

His remarks came in an interview with TASS, answering a question about how the work in the 3+3 format on the South Caucasus is progressing.

“Our plans are to actively use it to develop cooperation between the South Caucasus countries and their neighbors. The logic of such cooperation implies a collective consideration of issues of common interest, which do not exacerbate political contradictions and contribute to mutual trust. We are talking primarily about the search for answers to regional challenges and the resolution of emerging problems by the regions themselves. Involvement of all regional states in this process creates favorable conditions for establishing a dialogue, for example, between Yerevan and Baku, Yerevan and Ankara through the implementation of mutually beneficial projects in the areas of trade, energy, industry, innovative technologies and modernization of infrastructure,” he said.

According to Rudenko, currently the preparation for the second meeting of the format is underway. We expect to hold it by the end of the first half of the year: “As for unblocking the transport and economic ties, the specialized trilateral working group co-chaired by the Deputy Prime Ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia is engaged in it. A lot of work has been done in this direction. We are moving towards the speedy adoption of a specific decision which will enable the launch of specific projects in the region,” he added.
