PRESS RELEASE – Dr. Sharon Chekijian Collaborates with AUA to Develop Armenia’s Emergency Response Systems

PRESS RELEASE

Dr. Sharon Anoush Chekijian is an esteemed medical doctor, Director, and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine who recently joined the exclusive group of ChangeMakers of the American University of Armenia (AUA). With a strong belief in the power of education to take Armenia towards a brighter future, she is committed to extending her personal and professional expertise to the next generation of forward-thinkers and leaders.

Dr. Chekijian has partnered with AUA in the past, contributing to the growth of the University and student success in different ways. No doubt, her philanthropic comportment was imparted to her by her family — her father, Yervant Chekijian, and late uncle, Samuel Chekijian, are both AUA Pillars. She comments how fortunate they have felt to be able to support AUA’s mission and vision, which they also shared, adding, “Our family has always believed in the power of education to change lives, countries, and destinies. I believe that is because we have experienced the power of education firsthand.”

Born to an Armenian family from Jerusalem with ancestral roots in Zeytoun and Marash, Dr. Chekijian was raised in the Boston area of Massachusetts and currently resides in Connecticut. The granddaughter of genocide survivors Mary (née Zümrüt Norashkharian) and Youhanna Chekijian, she reflects on how this heritage has colored her worldview, strengthening her desire to work hard and aspire to success in honor of the invincible will and strength of her grandparents. “As children and grandchildren of genocide survivors, we know everything can be taken away from you, but not your education. We also know that the future of a brilliant and prosperous Armenia lies in the education of those who will continue to grow and transform the country.”

Dr. Chekijian remembers her first trip to Armenia during the First Artsakh War. She spent the summer with a special educational exemption through the AGBU/University of Michigan summer language program — a trip that preceded a critical time for the nation and served as a catalyst for her dedication to the Armenian cause. “On our return flight on Aeroflot via Paris, we learned that the Soviet Union had collapsed while we were in the air. This heralded a lifelong fascination with the birth and subsequent shaping of the newly independent Republic of Armenia,” she says.

Though AUA was founded soon after her return home, she was first introduced to the University while in medical school. Upon applying for funding to work on a project titled, “Legal, Professional, Public and Policy Barriers to the Development of Organ Donation and Transplantation Programs in the Republic of Armenia” — which later served as the basis of her thesis — she met Dr. Varduhi Petrosyan, current dean of the AUA Turpanjian College of Health Sciences (CHS)

“Dr. Petrosyan was one of the researchers in this project at the start of my career. The work I did that summer introduced me to people who have become lifelong collaborators. Since then, AUA has been a home away from home for all of my work and projects in Armenia that focus on emergency medical systems, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, traffic safety, and stroke care,” she explains, adding that she is currently working on a grant that combines many of these areas of interest.

In 2020, Dr. Chekijian became a Fulbright Scholar, continuing her work with CHS. “AUA was a natural partner and home for me, and the Fulbright Program allows me to advance my work in emergency care program development in Armenia.” Dr. Chekijian is working to optimize emergency systems and establish a novel emergency medicine residency program in cooperation with the Armenian Ministry of Health’s National Institute of Health. She is collaborating with colleagues at AUA on the research component of this initiative.

Dr. Chekijian emphasizes the value of developing emergency systems and disaster preparedness, something she thinks has been grossly undervalued, both in Armenia and globally. She had submitted her proposal right before March 2020, after which Armenia was drawn into the ravages of both COVID-19 and the 2020 Artsakh War, overwhelming the nation and its healthcare system. The timing of the Fulbright grant she was awarded perfectly lined up with her intent.

Further underlining the importance of a functional emergency care system, she cites global statistics that suggest Armenian citizens are at an unusually high risk for disaster in multiple ways, 2020 standing as an unfortunate example of being caught unaware and unprepared for the danger that ensued. She explains, “Emergency response relies on a functional emergency care system. The global burden of disease has recently shifted toward trauma and non-communicable diseases. The World Bank estimates that, in low- and middle-income countries, more than 50% of deaths and 40% of the disease burden could be alleviated with adequate emergency medical care.” She continues to remark that the silver lining in all this is that we recognize the amplified value that emergency response systems would bring and are aware of the work we have to do in Armenia to strengthen these systems.

Through the AUA Open Centers of Excellence, such as the Open Center for Transformative Health Solutions, students and faculty are able to collaborate with private and public stakeholders to develop processes that will address areas lacking within the national framework. “The development of emergency care systems can multiply the functioning of the health system overall and improve outcomes for all other disease processes,” Dr. Chekijian notes. “Weak delivery systems are especially dangerous when pushed to their limit, potentially due to a pandemic, a foreign attack, or a natural disaster resulting in mass casualties. Some cite cost as a reason not to strengthen emergency care and response, but globally, the development of emergency systems has proven to be an extremely efficient way to provide care across many different conditions. Surprisingly, emergency care is among the most cost-effective public health interventions.”

As an AUA ChangeMaker, Dr. Chekijian is happy to see that AUA students have already been introduced to these concepts, resulting in heightened interest in the subjects. “Our current students will lead the charge to right these wrongs and shore up our safety in the future. It’s my hope that AUA will become a regional center of excellence in the areas of disaster preparedness and injury prevention across the region and especially across Central Asia, where very few people are working in this field,” she urges.

In conclusion, she paraphrases Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given, much will be required.” AUA is grateful for the longtime support of the Chekijian family and highly values the commitment of Dr. Chekijian as a ChangeMaker for the University.

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission in the United States. AUA provides local and international students with Western-style education through top-quality undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs, promotes research and innovation, encourages civic engagement and community service, and fosters democratic values.

Azerbaijani press: Let no-one come and teach us, try to advise or guide us – President Ilham Aliyev

Politics Materials 27 May 2022 16:45

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. Let no-one come and teach us, try to advise or guide us. There is no need for that, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said during the meeting with the Aghali village residents, Trend reports.

“We have done a lot to strengthen our independence. We are fully independent politically. No country can influence our will, and everyone already knows that Azerbaijan must be reckoned with. Azerbaijan’s position must be taken into account. Azerbaijan is a self-respecting state and demands and receives this respect from everyone.

We are economically independent. Today, the number of economically independent countries is not so high. Recent history has shown this. But we are completely independent, we do not depend on anyone, we are building our own lives and do not need any help or credits. On the contrary, we are lending money to some countries. As a result of economic independence, I can say that this village of Aghali has become one of the most progressive villages in the world now. We have done this, we are carrying out restoration work on our own. We are doing that in all other liberated lands on our own. Huge projects are being implemented now. The people of Azerbaijan are regularly informed about this.

Political and economic independence has allowed us the opportunity to build our lives the way we want, to build a state based on the ancient traditions and values of the Azerbaijani people, and to live comfortably in this state. The processes taking place in the world today are before our eyes of course. Azerbaijan is a land of stability and security. I can say that it is an island of stability and security. The whole world already sees and knows this. Of course, if we were not independent, i.e. if we were not truly independent, we would not be able to end the Armenian occupation. Because there were the factors that had led to this occupation, of course, external factors. Armenia itself cannot be considered a military, political or economic power, not even a medium-level state. The situation in Armenia is obvious. Of course, we must take into account these external factors. But at the same time, they could not have stopped us. From the first days to the last days of the war, I said that no-one and nothing could stop us. But the Armenian leadership had to give us a timetable of when our lands would be vacated, and then we are ready to stop the war, and we have kept our word. Therefore, if we did not pursue an independent policy, it is possible that these external factors, the foreign patrons of Armenia, and some of them threatened us, could deter us from this. But they did not. Because we have shown a strong will, our people united, and this is, of course, based on solidarity, national pride, dignity and power.

Today, the power factor is in the foreground. I said this 10 years ago. All my speeches are available in the media. I said that international law does not work. We must not deceive ourselves, we must be stronger, we must gather strength. If necessary, we must drive the enemy out of our lands by force. I said it and I did it.

The power factor will continue to dominate the world. The recent history shows this too. Therefore, we must continue to be strong, and we are getting stronger. Today, our economic indicators are very positive. I can say that Azerbaijan is one of the fastest growing countries in the world. We are also increasing our military strength. After the war, new armed forces are being created, new equipment is being purchased, and we will continue to do so. Because if we are not strong, we cannot live the way we want. We want to live freely. We want no-one to interfere in our work from now on. There is no need for that. We have built such a beautiful state that many today are jealous of it. Let no-one come and teach us, try to advise or guide us. There is no need for that,” the head of state said.

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijan has a say in formation of post-conflict agenda today, this say is decisive – President Ilham Aliyev

Politics Materials 27 May 2022 16:58

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. Azerbaijan has a say in the formation of the post-conflict agenda today, and this say is decisive, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said during the meeting with the residents of Aghali village after attending the launch of the first phase of the smart village project in Zangilan district on May 27, Trend reports.

“But at the same time, we are not making any unrealistic demands. We are saying that they should recognize our territorial integrity. Let’s define borders, let everyone live in their own country and not interfere in each other’s affairs. We are saying this, and this is the essence of the five basic principles for the peace agreement put forward by me. In particular, the principle of renunciation of territorial claims against each other is of great importance, and the Armenian leadership has adopted these five principles. Now they want to add something, but these are the basic fundamental principles,” the head of state said.

YEREVAN, MAY 27, ARMENPRESS. The Russian government is working to enhance the clearance capacity of the border crossing points at the Russian-Georgian border, including the Upper Lars (Verkhniy Lars) checkpoint, the Russian Ministry of Transport told TASS News Agency.

Upper Lars is the key transport crossing point through which Armenia carries out most of its trade with Russia. Armenian companies suffer losses whenever traffic at the crossing gets hindered due to weather conditions.

“An additional 12 lanes will be introduced in July this year, and another 12 by yearend. Thus, the total number of lanes at the Upper Lars checkpoint will reach 39. More than 120 people are involved in the reconstruction works now,” the Russian Ministry of Transport told TASS.

According to the ministry, the highest daily clearance capacity of the checkpoint was up to 1500 vehicles, while the daily average in the beginning of 2022 was up to 900 vehicles.

The ongoing measures have increased the capacity to up to 2300 vehicles (including up to 1100 cargo vehicles).

YEREVAN, MAY 27, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan sent a congratulatory message to the President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Luis Lacalle Pou on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the PM’s Office said.

The message reads as follows,

“Your Excellency,

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

The friendly relations between our peoples, of course, have a much longer history, and during these 30 years they have also moved to the interstate level, continued to develop in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, common values and mutual trust.

We will never forget that Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965, reaffirming its reputation as an advocate of fundamental human rights and universal values. At present, the Armenian community formed in Uruguay after the genocide is an important factor that strengthens the ties between our countries.

Ahead of the 30th anniversary, I attach great importance to the mutual decision to open embassies in Yerevan and Montevideo, which testifies to the high-level political dialogue and vision for the future.

I congratulate all of us on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Uruguay. I reaffirm my readiness to strengthen cooperation with friendly Uruguay in all areas of mutual and multilateral interest.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration”.
