Turkey, Armenia agree to start direct cargo trade at earliest date, Ankara says

Turkey and Armenia agreed in normalisation talks between special representatives that the neighbours would start direct air cargo trade between each other at the earliest possible date, as they work to mend ties after decades of animosity.

Turkey has been working to normalise relations with Armenia in coordination with Azerbaijan since December. The neighbours held a fourth round of talks in Vienna on Friday, following the first meeting between their foreign ministers in years in March.

In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Ankara and Yerevan had also agreed to allow third-country citizens to cross their shared border at the earliest date possible and decided to initiate the necessary process to that end. The special envoys also discussed other possible steps for “full normalisation”, it said.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia is discussing four issues with Azerbaijan, including the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan said Friday, June 30.

Grigoryan said humanitarian issues, first of all the the return of prisoners and information about missing persons, unblocking of transport communications, as well as demarcation and demarcation of the borders are high on the agenda as well.

The Secretary again denied that the parties are negotiating the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, maintaining that both Russia and the European Union have confirmed that no such issue is on the table.

The Azerbaijani side has on multiple occasions raised the question about a "corridor" through the southern Armenian province of Syunik that would connect Nakhijevan to the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side, however, has repeatedly denied being involved in negotiations for the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, stressing that they have only agreed to unblock transport communications in the region.

Karabakh Ombudsman sheds light on resettlement plans

PanARMENIAN.Net - Ombudsman of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) Gegham Stepanyan has said that people who might be displaced once a new corridor connecting Karabakh to Armenia is ready will either be resettled in other communities of Artsakh or Armenia.

If it comes to resettlement, Stepanyan said, the residents of the village of Aghavno will move to the villages of Hin Shen and Mets Shen in Karabakh, while the residents of Berdzor might receive housing in Armenia.

"Residents of Kashatagh can make us of preferential conditions for obtaining apartments in Armenia,” Stepanyan said.

Stepanyan's comments came days after Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan revealed that there is a "preliminary understanding" that Lachin corridor connecting Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) will be changed. Asked what will happen to the residents of communities in the current corridor, Pashinyan said those territories will pass under the control of Azerbaijan.

Armenia: Opposition MPs resign, get sacked from key posts

PanARMENIAN.Net - Lawmaker Armen Gevorgyan from the opposition Armenia bloc has resigned as the chairman of the parliament's Committee on Regional and Eurasian Integration.

"Today's situation dictates clear rules of political, public and human ethics, which I cannot ignore, and which do not allow me to continue serving as the chairman of the Committee," Grigoryan said in a statement on his Telegram channel on Friday, July 1.

"Such decisions can also be the best opportunity to rethink and evaluate the acquired political experience and new knowledge, they can also become a stimulus for the formation of my personal future vision."

Also Friday, the ruling Civil Contract party sacked parliament Vice Speaker Ishkhan Saghatelyan and Chairman of the Committee on Economic Affairs Vahe Hakobyan – both of them from Armenia bloc.

Saghatelyan said in an interview with the Armenian Service of RFE/RL that the opposition will probably relinquish all the other posts they currently hold at the parliament.

Armenia and Turkey have agreed in normalisation talks to open their common border for third-country nationals, the Interfax news agency cited the Armenian foreign ministry as saying on Friday.
The ministry also said the two countries, whose relations have been strained for decades, had agreed to begin direct cargo flights in both directions.

Angela Merkel to chair the jury of the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be the next president of the jury for the prize, worth 1 million euros, awarded annually by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

This is the first position accepted by Merkel since she ceased her duties as chancellor in December 2021.

Founded by the Armenian oil magnate and art collector Calouste Gulbenkian in Portugal in 1956, the foundation aims to improve people’s quality of life through art, charity, science and education.

Angela Merkel succeeds Jorge Sampaio, who has been president of the jury since its first edition. The jury also includes Miguel Bastos Araújo (Research Professor at the National Museum of Natural Sciences, in Madrid and Professor of Biogeography at the University of Évora, Pessoa Prize 2018), Hans Joachim Schellnhuber (Founder and Director Emeritus of  the Potsdam Institute for Research on the Impact Climate Specialist and Professor Emeritus at Tsinghua University in China), Johan Rockström (Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Researchand Professor of Earth System Sciences at the University of Potsdam), Miguel Arias Cañete (former European Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action), Rik Leemans (Director of the Environmental Systems Analysis Group, University of Wageningen and Wageningen and editor-in-chief of the journal international  Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability ), Runa Khan (Founder and Executive Director of the NGO Friendship and President of Global Dignity Bangladesh), Sandra Díaz (Biologist, Professor of Ecology at the National University of Córdoba and member of the Royal Society) and Sunita Narain (Director of the Center for Science and Environment in Delhi and Editor of Down To Earth Magazine).

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity was established by the Foundation with the aim of distinguishing people, groups or organizations from all over the world that have been outstanding in the fight against the climate crisis. 

Among the potential areas of recognition for the Award are those that can contribute to reducing or removing greenhouse gas emissions; actions to increase the resilience of people and the environment to the impacts of climate change; and also the mobilization of financial resources, public or private, to accelerate the decarbonization of the economy.

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity was awarded for the first time, in 2020 , to the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg , who decided to distribute the amount to various environmental and humanitarian projects in the Global South.

Last year, the Prize was awarded to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy – the largest global alliance for city climate leadership, comprising over 10,600 cities and local governments from 140 countries, including Portugal. The amount of the Gulbenkian Prize was used to support the Energy Transition and climate resilience in Africa, with large projects being financed in five cities in Senegal (supply of drinking water) and in one city in Cameroon (development of energy efficiency solutions) .

Armenian Parliament votes to remove two opposition MPs from posts

At the extraordinary session of the National Assembly today, the parliamentary majority, with 66 votes in favor, adopted a decision to remove Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a member of the Armenia faction, from the position of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.

The Parliament also decided to terminate the powers of Vahe Hakobyan as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.

The decision to remove Saghatelyan and Hakobyan from their positions was made by the Civil Contract faction on June 28.

Pensioners in Armenia to get 10% cashback for non-cash transactions

The program of 10% cashback for non-cash transactions for pensioners and pension who receive benefits, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs informs.

From now on, citizens who receive their pension or benefits in a non-cash way and make non-cash purchases will receive a 10% refund next month, but not more than 5,000 drams.

The refund also applies to utility payments. The mechanism applies not only to ATMs, but also to utility payments made through mobile banking applications.

The VTB Armenia Bank, Ardshinbank, and Armenian Business Bank have already joined the program. All citizens who wish to change the organization providing their pension or benefit can apply to the regional center of the Unified Social Service.

Deputy PM speaks about “new phase” in Armenian-American relations

“Bilateral intergovernmental consultations grew from economic frameworks into strategic dialogues. I am happy that today we have a rich agenda which covers many areas, from legal reforms and prevention of corruption to energy and information technology,” the Deputy PM said, speaking on June 30 during the celebration of US Independence Day.

 

“I should note with satisfaction that in the spring of 2022, the annual sessions of the Armenian-American strategic dialogue were resumed and on May 2, the launch of the concluding session was given in Washington by the Armenian Foreign Minister and US Secretary of State. Among the achievements of the 2022 strategic dialogue is also the Memorandum of Understanding Concerning Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation signed by the heads of the foreign agencies of the two countries. I am sure that the deepening of cooperation in this field will open up new opportunities for Armenia,” Hambardzum Matevosyan said.

Armenian opposition protesting near parliament

The Armenian opposition started a protest near the parliament building in central Yerevan on Friday morning amid debates being held by the parliament majority to strip two opposition lawmakers of their posts. Scores of police officers have cordoned off the street near the building.

The ruling Civil Contract faction has drafted a decision to oust Hayastan bloc’s Ishkhan Saghatelyan and Vahe Hakobyan as deputy parliament speaker and chairman of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, respectively, for absenteeism.

Hayk Derzyan, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), denounced the process as “anti-democratic”, saying it is detrimental to the people who voted for the opposition at the 2021 elections.

“In fact, they are trying to stifle the voice of the opposition,” he told reporters.

The opposition has scheduled its next rally for Friday evening.
