Newspaper: Internal political intrigues expected in Artsakh

NEWS.am
Armenia –

YEREVAN. – Past daily of Armenia writes: According to the Artsakh source of "Past" newspaper, the Armenian authorities plan to hold a referendum on constitutional changes in December.

According to information, one of the issues subject to key changes concerns the procedure for electing the president. Let us add that after the referendum, it is planned to hold presidential elections next year. The source of the newspaper reports that Arayik Harutyunyan will not only leave the post of president after the referendum but will also announce that he is going to leave politics, which he has not once talked about in his close circle.

At present, there is no particular political activity in Artsakh, but it is obvious that the internal political events will soon become more active. There is still no consensus on the candidacy of the new president, and there are no discussions at the moment. Most likely, they will start already at the beginning of next year."

Newspaper: Internal troops no longer to be sent to border

NEWS.am
Armenia –

YEREVAN. – Past daily of Armenia writes: After the revolution of 2018, in July, the government made a political decision that internal police troops should be sent to the border.

Although "participating in the defense of the country" is also included in the list of issues under the "Internal Troops" law, the former authorities did not do this, on the contrary, they were used to suppress internal political issues and especially rallies.

Coming to power in 2018, Nikol Pashinyan announced that everything is changing, the police should not be a body that protects the authorities and solves internal political problems, but should serve the country and the society, and took a bold step: he personally attended the first shift of police officers with a solemn ceremony. Starting from 18 September, policemen guarded the border in 15-day shifts.

We were informed that months ago this decision was canceled; internal troops are no longer sent to the border, even soldiers are not sent from Armenia to Artsakh, but after the war, the same officers continued to perform service at the borders of Armenia from time to time. Now it's finally stopped."

Armenia –

A group of activists in Armenia staged a demonstration on top of Mount Hatis, and expressed their protest against the initiative of Prosperous Armenia Party leader—and business tycoon—Gagik Tsarukyan and the Armenian government to build a giant statue of Jesus Christ on the mountain.

Also, they showed a video of the Bronze Age monuments that are already destroyed as a result of the construction work for the aforesaid statue.

The Ministry of Environment of Armenia had announced that the aforementioned construction on top of Mount Hatis had been stopped, and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports had considered any construction on the mountain inadmissible.

The Armenian Apostolic Church had spoken against the installation of this statue, and urged Tsarukyan not to implement such an initiative, as it goes against the practice of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Tsarukyan, however, did not call off the project.

And Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting of the government that they had received the respective documents and positively assessed the installation of a giant statue of Jesus Christ on top of Mount Hatis. According to him, this will promote tourism in Armenia.

What did Armenia, Azerbaijan FMs discuss in Tbilisi?

Armenia opposition MP: Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem is in a hurry

NEWS.am
Armenia –

It is obvious that Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev is in a hurry. Ishkhan Saghatelyan, an opposition MP and a member of the Supreme Body of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun Party of Armenia, told Armenian NEWS.am about this—and commenting on Saturday’s meeting between the FMs of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

"In general, the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem is in a hurry, they are trying to turn the de facto advantage they gained in the [44-day Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)] war [in the fall of 2020] into de jure, to document their victory because they realize that when they lose their partner in Armenia [i.e., PM Nikol Pashinyan], they will not be able to speak to Armenia in that language, and therefore all these moves and the actions are already within that framework," Saghatelyan added.

Reflecting on the process of stripping the Armenian opposition of its parliamentary mandates, the opposition lawmaker said that neither the ruling power brought them to the parliament, nor can the ruling power strip them of their parliamentary mandates.

"We do not take into account their opinion in our actions, we have worded our position very clearly, we will return to the parliament solely with our agenda, we have worded it, and we have announced it many times; I rule out in all other cases. They can't deal with us with threats, stripping us of the [parliamentary] mandate, I don't know with what [else]. We don't take [it] seriously, as that is not the agenda and challenge of our country," he said.

According to Saghatelyan, the fact that the incumbent Armenian authorities are looking for “heart-throbbing” ways to strip the opposition of its parliamentary mandate is an answer to all those who think that they will do more damage to the authorities by giving up their parliamentary seats.

"At this moment, I believe it is completely correct and justified not to give up the [parliamentary] mandates" Ishkhan Saghatelyan concluded.

“After careful study of proposals from different countries, BoD chose Armenia as a host for the upcoming Congress. Armenia showed their great organisational skills during EUBC Elite Men’s Championships in May this year. Government support, accessibility and simplified visa process helped the country to win," said IBA president Umar Kremlev.

The selection of host cities for boxing events in 2023 was also discussed at the board meeting, which included a presentation by the Spanish Boxing Federation on progress towards the 2022 IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Alicante.

Sports: Exclusive: Armenia chosen by IBA to hold Extraordinary Congress after re-run of Presidential election ordered

  •

  •  Friday,

  • Yerevan in Armenia will host the International Boxing Association (IBA) Extraordinary Congress, where a re-run of the vote to elect a President will be held, insidethegames can reveal.

The Extraordinary Congress is due to held on a date to-be-decided between 24 September and 1 October and is set to be IBA's second of the year, following on from the controversial meeting in Istanbul in May.

The Netherlands' Boris van der Vorst was one of five candidates deemed ineligible to stand by the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit (BIIU) on the eve of the election, allowing Russian Umar Kremlev to be re-elected as President unopposed.

The BIIU ruled that van der Vorst and four Board of Directors candidates – New Zealand’s Steve Hartley, Sweden’s Per-Axel Sjöholm and United States' Mike McAtee – had allegedly broken rules on breaches of collaboration between candidates and early campaigning.

But, following an appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that van der Vorst should have been allowed to stand, adding that a formal warning or no sanction at all would have been sufficient.

Shortly after the Istanbul Congress, the International Olympic Committee announced that IBA would again not be in charge of organising the boxing tournament at Paris 2024 after sports director Kit McConnell claimed that "enough was enough".

Van der Vorst had called for the Congress to be held in the Olympic capital Lausanne as a "necessary measure to show commitment to integrity and transparency".

Earlier this week, van der Vorst had written to Armenian Boxing Federation President Ohanes Ovsepian to claim that visa requirements to enter Switzerland should not provide an obstacle to it hosting the event after he challenged the call for Lausanne to stage the Extraordinary Congress.

The Netherlands were among several countries to submit bids, along with an unlikely proposal from Lviv in war-torn Ukraine, but Armenia was chosen following a meeting of the IBA Board of Directors.

"After careful study of proposals from different countries [the Board of Directors] choose Armenia has as a host for the upcoming Congress," Kremlev announced.

"Armenia showed their great organisational skills during EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) Elite Men’s Championships in May this year.

"Government support, accessibility and simplified visa process helped the country to win."

Kremlev had met Armenia's Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan during those Championships, claiming the "people here love boxing".

But the choice of Armenia, Russia’s only ally in the South Caucasus and which is home to military bases hosting 3,000 Russian troops opposing NATO’s eastern flank, will surprise several at a time many countries have imposed sanctions on Moscow following the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia also officially protects Armenia’s airspace and state borders and is among Vladimir Putin’s closest allies.

Armenia also has a long-running conflict with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region with the two countries at war as recently as 2020.

Visa requirements for Armenia, though, are fairly simple for travellers from most countries.

It has become increasingly difficult, however, to travel to Armenia from many countries since sanctions were ordered again Aeroflot, Rossiya Airlines and Ural Airlines following the Russian attack on Ukraine.

IBA have promised that the Extraordinary Congress will be live streamed to allow online participation for those who are unable to attend in person.

Holy Cross Cathedral to celebrate 100 years of service to LA’s Armenian community

    Public Radio of Armenia
    Armenia –

One hundred years of service to the Los Angeles Armenian-American community by the Holy Cross Cathedral will be celebrated at a gala banquet on Saturday, September 24, under the auspices of Prelate, His Grace Bishop Torkom Donoyan, Asbarez reports.

To mark this occasion, an evening church service is planned for Saturday, September 10, with the blessing of the incense and crosses at 7:00 p.m. The celebration will continue on Sunday, September 11, 2022 at 11:00 AM with the official divine liturgy; the blessing of Madagh; Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Name Day of Holy Cross Cathedral.

This is a unique opportunity for the Los Angeles Armenian community to gather together to celebrate the Cathedral’s 100th anniversary. The church has served as a haven to many of the immigrants and their families who came to this country seeking freedom while maintaining a connection to their heritage.

Founded 100 years ago on 20th street in the heart of the then-Armenian-populated district in what is now Downtown Los Angeles, Holy Cross served as the spiritual anchor for the Armenians who were then slowly congregating in Southern California. Today, the Church, that was relocated in the 1980’s to the City of Montebello and recognized as a Cathedral, is the spiritual home for thousands of Armenian Americans across Southern California.
