Minister of Defense visits troops stationed on eastern border

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan visited the 2nd Army Corps on July 20. He was accompanied by the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defense said in a press release.

Papikyan toured the military bases of the Army Corps and inspected the logistical works and the course of military training of the troops.

Minister Papikyan discussed with the command staff issues pertaining to strengthening of the personnel’s combat readiness, infrastructure modernization and improvement.

Then, the Minister of Defense visited the eastern borderline and inspected the works of equipping the frontline at military positions.

The commander of the military base reported on the implemented construction and reinforcement works at the frontline and the actions aimed at the security of the personnel.

Papikyan assured that all issues regarding ensuring frontline security will be properly studied and resolved.

During discussions with the command staff and on-duty servicemen, the Minister of Defense also addressed the ongoing reforms in the military, the programs related to social protection of servicemembers, and assured that these issues are always under the spotlight of the military-political leadership of the country.



Armenia’s Migration Service, World Vision International to deepen cooperation in prevention of trafficking

Head of the Migration Service of Armenia Armen Ghazaryan and World Vision Armenia Programme Director Raffi Doudaklian signed on July 20 a memorandum of cooperation on deepening the partnering relations in the field of prevention of trafficking, the Migration Service told Armenpress.

According to the memorandum, the sides will cooperate in uniting efforts towards pre-identification of possible victims of human trafficking and exploitation, by strengthening the knowledge and skills of public servants involved in the migration chain during the professional activity.

The professional training program module for public servants involved in the migration chain will soon be developed with the involvement of representatives of the Migration Service, “Together Against Human Trafficking” program team and other concerned agencies.

Yerevan metro evacuated following bomb threat

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Authorities evacuated all stations of the Yerevan metro on July 20 in response to a bomb threat.

“A bomb threat was received targeting one of the stations and all stations were shut down and the passengers and staff were evacuated,” Yerevan metro spokesperson Tatev Khachatryan told ARMENPRESS.

Khachatryan said that authorities are now working in the station.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations, in a separate statement, said that K9 units and crisis management teams were dispatched to the stations to investigate.

Armenia has no territorial claims towards its neighbors – Speaker of Parliament

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan received today the delegation of the German Bundestag led by Vice-President Katrin Göring-Eckardt, the Parliament’s press service said.

The sides highly valued the sustainable development of the Armenian-German friendly relations and the deepening of inter-parliamentary cooperation.

The conversation focused on the necessity of multi-layered parliamentary cooperation and joint projects between the Armenian National Assembly and the German Bundestag.

“Among EU states, Germany is Armenia’s largest trade partner. We also highly appreciate Germany’s support to Armenia’s democratic agenda”, Speaker Alen Simonyan said.

Issues relating to the post-war situation, the establishment of lasting peace in the region were discussed. The Speaker of Parliament said that Armenia is acting with an agenda to open a peaceful era in the region and is making efforts both in the direction of unblocking of regional infrastructures and transportation routes, and of delimitation and border security. He said Armenia has no territorial claims towards its neighbors.

The German Bundestag Vice-President said they closely follow the developments happening in the region and expressed confidence that peaceful negotiations are an effective mean to solve conflicts.

The sides also discussed practical issues relating to the organization of Christian Prayer Breakfast, a part of Germany’s rich parliamentary tradition, as well as renewable energy-related matters.

New Ambassador of Albania presents credentials to Armenian President

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Newly appointed Ambassador of Albania to Armenia Luela Hajdaraga (residence in Athens, Greece) presented her credentials today to President Vahagn Khachaturyan, the Presidential Office said.

The Armenian President congratulated the Ambassador on appointment and wished a productive work.

In her turn the Ambassador of Albania thanked the Armenian President for the reception and stated that a big potential of educational, tourism and cultural cooperation exists between the two countries.

The sides exchanged ideas about the opportunities of developing the mutual partnership in commercial and educational-cultural spheres.

Gyumri and Russia’s Tver become sister cities

GYUMRI, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Gyumri Vice Mayor Davit Arushanyan and the Mayor of the Russian city of Tver Alexey Ogonkov signed a cooperation agreement on July 20.

Under the agreement, Gyumri and Tver became sister cities.

Arushanyan presented to Ogonkov Gyumri’s potential and resources in culture, sport, IT, tourism and light industry.

He said that the agreement is “the first step” in strengthening the friendly relations between Gyumri and Tver.

“Meetings and mutual-visits of delegations will be organized to coordinate partnership and exchange opinions on issues of mutual interest, consultations and negotiations will be held and if necessary working groups will be launched to cooperate in various areas,” Arushanyan said, adding that they agreed to contribute to creating business ties between the two cities.

Mayor Ogonkov noted that the Armenian community has its contribution in the development of a number of areas in Tver, in person of the locals of Gyumri living in Tver.

Ambassador donates books on Armenian Genocide, history and culture to National Library of Greece

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Ambassador of Armenia to Greece Tigran Mkrtchyan visited the National Library of Greece where he met with director Stavros Zoumboulakis, the Embassy of Armenia in Greece reported.

The Ambassador toured the Library, got acquainted with its literature, publications, exclusive books, as well as the process of serving readers online.

The sides highlighted the importance of inter-library cooperation, contacts, mutual visits and exchange of experience in the development and strengthening of inter-cultural and educational ties. The prospects of holding joint events were also discussed.

Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan donated a number of books about the Armenian Genocide, the history and culture of the Armenian people to the National Library of Greece, expressing hope that this literature will find its worthy place in the Library.

Armenian FM, Polish Deputy PM discuss prospects for development of economic cooperation between two countries

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is in Poland on an official visit, had a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister of the country Jacek Sasin, the Armenian Foreign Ministry reports.

The interlocutors commended the development and existing dynamic of the interstate relations for 30 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations. 

Foreign Minister of Armenia underscored that Poland is one of the important European partners of Armenia.

Ararat Mirzoyan and Jacek Sasin discussed the prospects for the development of economic cooperation between the two countries, expressing readiness to make efforts towards the full realization of trade and economic potential, creation of investment opportunities and activation of business to business contacts.

Minister Mirzoyan noted that since 2018, the anti-corruption campaign, as well as reforms towards improving the business environment, have been widely implemented in Armenia, which creates good opportunities for the investors.

The sides emphasized the implementation of the agreement on the acquisition of about 65 percent of the shares of the Armenian Stock Exchange by the Warsaw Stock Exchange, which will create new opportunities for cooperation in the capital market between Armenia and Poland.

The role of the Armenian-Polish Intergovernmental Commission of Economic Cooperation as an effective platform for discussing joint programs and outlining practical steps was highlighted. In this context, the interlocutors also emphasized mutual visits of business delegations and the holding of conferences.

At the meeting, Foreign Minister Mirzoyan also presented the position of the Armenian side regarding the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
