YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan received today President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and his delegation, the Presidential Office said in a press release.

Welcoming the guests, the Armenian President highly appreciated Mr. Abdulla Shahid’s effective leadership during the 76th General Assembly.

“Welcome to Armenia. Your visit coincided with the 30th anniversary of Armenia’s membership to the United Nations. It was in March, 1992. However, in December we again have a significant event to celebrate because the opening of the UN Office took place in December 1992”, President Khachaturyan said, adding. “When we gained independence, one of our desires was to join the UN because we understood that the further development of our state is impossible without the cooperation with the UN. Our history of these 30 years has shown that we have really reached achievements with the UN support, which played a key role for the development of our state. I want to specifically highlight the development of democratic institutes where the UN played a very big role. During these 30 years our country has actively cooperated with all agencies of the UN, implemented different programs mainly aimed at eliminating poverty, inequality, as well as developing a sustainable legal state.

I am convinced that your visit will contribute also to our future cooperation, especially when your presidency at the 76th UN General Assembly is impressive because your efforts are directed to the restoration of relations or economic recovery in the world after the pandemic, as well as to uniting the international community”.

The President of the UN General Assembly thanked for the warm welcome and stated that it’s a great honor for him to visit Armenia in a period that marks the 30th anniversary of Armenia’s membership to the UN. He said that all programs with Armenia will continue to be implemented aimed at improving citizens’ life.

Thereafter, the Armenian President and the UN General Assembly President discussed issues relating to the regional security and stability. President Khachaturyan raised issues relating to the immediate repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war and civilian captives who are still illegally held in Azerbaijan. The UNGA President welcomed Armenia’s efforts aimed at establishing peace, noting that the establishment of lasting and stable peace will create broad opportunities for all countries of the region.

YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey will discuss defense cooperation at a meeting in Sochi on August 5, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today, reports TASS.

“Defense cooperation between the two countries is constantly on the agenda and the fact of cooperation in such a sensitive field makes it clear that the entire range of our relations remains at quite a high level”, Peskov pointed out.

He confirmed that “the two presidents touched upon various aspects of defense cooperation in their recent contacts”. “As a rule, various aspects are discussed at almost every meeting so defense cooperation will definitely be discussed in Sochi”, the Russian presidential spokesman noted.

YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. The President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and his delegation visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vahe Gevorgyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations Mher Margaryan and the UN Armenia Acting Resident Coordinator Lila Pieters Yahia accompanied Abdulla Shahid.

Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Director Harutyun Marutyan presented the history of the three cross-stones erected in Tsitsernakaberd Memorial’s territory which are dedicated to the memory of the Armenians who were killed during the ethnic cleansings perpetrated in the territory of Azerbaijan against the Armenian population in the end of the previous century.

Abdulla Shahid laid a wreath at the Armenian Genocide memorial and flowers at the Eternal Flame, observing a moment of silence in the memory of the 1,5 million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide.

The delegation then visited the Armenian Genocide Museum.

UNGA President Abdulla Shahid signed the honorary guest book.

Director Harutyun Marutyan presented books on the Armenian Genocide to the guest.

YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. On July 27, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is in Prague on a working visit, laid a wreath at the khachqar (cross-stone) dedicated to Armenian-Czech friendship, the Armenian foreign ministry reported.

The FM was accompanied by Marek Benda, Head of the Armenia-Czechia friendship group of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.

YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Hambardzum Matevosyan received today the President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and his delegation, the deputy PM’s Office said.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Vahe Gevorgyan, acting UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia Lila Pieters Yahia and others.

Welcoming the first visit of the UNGA President to Armenia, Deputy PM Matevosyan called it symbolic because this year marks the 30th anniversary of Armenia’s membership to the United Nations.

He highly appreciated the efforts of the UNGA President aimed at fighting the negative consequences of the pandemic and uniting the international community’s efforts for this purpose.

During the meeting the sides touched upon the Armenia-UN partnership, highlighted the necessity of effective implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the context of the Agenda 2030.

The Armenian Deputy PM and the UN General Assembly President highlighted the preservation of peace, security in the region and the priority of human rights. In this context Abdulla Shahid welcomed Armenia’s efforts aimed at establishing stability and security in the region.

At the meeting Deputy PM Matevosyan also raised the necessity of UN engagement in solving the humanitarian needs in Nagorno Karabakh, as well as touched upon the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, stating that Armenia is committed to the peaceful settlement of the conflict under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship, which, he said, remains as the only internationally authorized mediation format.

Preparations for FemInno international women's conference are in active stage. the founder shares the details

YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. Preparations for the FemInno innovative international women's conference to be held in Armenia for the first time are in an active stage. The conference will be held on July 30-31 at the y Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex.

ARMENPRESS participated in the preparatory work with the organizers and spoke with the founder of the conference, Seda Papoyan, who emphasized that this is the biggest conference ever organized in Armenia focused on the involvement of women in the fields of information technology and innovation. "This is a conference about women, but not only for women," Papoyan said.

She said that as the Armenian branch of the Girl in Tech international network, they have been operating for about 5 years with the aim of attracting, educating and encouraging the involvement of women in the field of technology. They decided to hold the conference in 2020. They believed that Armenia can take on the rather important responsibility of being a regional technological hub.

“The conference is dedicated to engaging, encouraging and pushing forward women in science, technology and business. The role of men is also very important here, because in the field of science and technology men dominate and they are the decision makers. Often those decision-makers should change their approaches so that women don't have problems," Papoyan emphasized.

According to her, women in these fields have to first prove that they have sufficient abilities, and only then they are given the opportunity to create results. “Why to waste effort and time only on sex-based discrimination”, Papoyan emphasizes. It is necessary to take a person as a specialist and start work from that point.

"The conference is for showing that women have nothing to prove in the field," says the founder of the conference, emphasizing that the conference is entitled “Female is now”.

"We are trying to prove that women's time is now, the present belongs to women, not the future", she said.

Papoyan said that Vice President of the National Assembly Hakob Arshakyan will make an opening speech at the conference in support of the idea and the efforts made for holding the conference.

About three dozen speakers representing more than 15 countries participating in the conference include both women and men. Papoyan emphasizes that there will be bold speeches by male speakers that men are at fault for creating this discrimination.

During the conference, the results of the competition of startups created by both Armenian and foreign women will be summarized. More than 50 applications have been received. There is a professional jury that will decide the best startup or startups among the ten selected. And the prize fund is around 10 thousand dollars. Five of the 10 startups are from Armenia, two from Jordan, one from Bahrain, and the others from Tanzania and Kenya.

The FemInno conference will be continuous. Every year in the summer, the organizers will appreciate, praise the role of women in technology and science. The founder of FemInno emphasizes that this is a solidarity conference, they want to create an interesting cooperative atmosphere between the sexes, to show decision makers that women are really able to create values and there is no need to discriminate against them.

YEREVAN, JULY 27, ARMENPRESS. The Turkish Consulate located in the Iraqi city of Mosul has been bombed, ARMENPRESS reports, the Turkish "Anadolu" news agency informs.  

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey issued a condemning statement regarding the incident and threatened the side that carried out the attack, calling them terrorists.

According to Turkish sources, 4 rockets were fired at the consulate building, but there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the incident.

Russia is a supporter of turning the South Caucasus into a zone of peace and prosperity and is not going to compete with anyone, ARMENPRESS reports Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Ivan Nechaev said during an online briefing, answering the question of a journalist of the Russian media, how he interprets the information circulating in the press that the West is trying to exclude Russia from the process of normalization of relations between Yerevan and Baku.

The spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Moscow's position that efforts to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan should be based on November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26 statements signed at the top level between Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"We are not against non-regional players joining the process, if they act within the framework of the mentioned agreements and contribute to their implementation. The important thing is to prevent duplication and “secret games” in order to weaken someone, to "put spoke in the wheels", said Ivan Nechaev.
