Ishkhan Saghatelyan’s full speech from France Square

Armenia –

NEWS.am presents Ishkhan Saghatelyan, ARFD General Assembly representative and an MP from the Hayastan faction, speaking during a rally in France Square.

"Dear Compatriots,

I have spoken many times about the achievements we have together as a result of this movement. I declare with full responsibility that from the end of April to this day, you, the citizens gathered here, have become the number one security factor of our country. This is a proud yet painful fact. Before this group of traitors came to power, Armenia's security was ensured by our Army, our intelligence services, and our diplomacy. Today, however, there is no state. All those structures have been seized by the traitor Nikol and have become his henchmen. But instead there are you. Dignified citizens of Armenia who defend the real interests of Armenia, who tell the world that we own our homeland and are ready to fight for it.

And all those who think our struggle is ineffective, let them see how they speak out about the Resistance movement in Turkey and Azerbaijan, let them see how worried the leaders of the enemy state are about the fate of the Armenian government. This fact alone proves the success of the movement.

Dear fellow Armenians, the accomplishments are obvious; however, I know that many of you had higher expectations than what we achieved.

We have set ourselves the task of removing these powers in a short period of time, which we have not yet been able to achieve. Our main problem remains unresolved. Armenia still rules us, creating ontological dangers for all of us. This is why many of our friends who fight with us on the street are sometimes depressed, angry, but never broken.

But if the struggle drags on, we should not become depressed or frustrated, but rather fix the gaps, address the problems, and move forward. Fighting should become a way of life, our daily routine.

If the battle drags on during the war, and during the battle you also have casualties, losses, why not desert, it does not mean that you should lay down your arms and retreat, in this case you should reorganize, mobilize your forces, prepare for a long fight and go for victory. We are guided by this principle and logic.

They said that in September we would go back to parliament and work with these authorities. Moreover, they do this by brazenly twisting my words. I never said anything like that. This is an absolute and immoral lie.

Once again for those who haven't understood I must say what we have been saying for the last three months: if the opposition enters parliament it will do so only with its own agenda which our people have set.

That agenda is very clear: the elimination of Nikol, the fight against threats to Armenia and Artsakh, and our initiatives to solve vital issues in Armenia and Artsakh.

The majority group in the National Assembly cannot involve us in their anti-patriotic and anti-national conspiracy by blackmailing us into depriving them of their mandates. CC Backpackers will not see us in the same room with their bogus plans.

To put it more simply and solidly, the Armenian people, unfortunately, have no other platform for the _expression_ of their will than the street than this square. All other institutional platforms where, under other conditions, issues concerning the interests of the Armenian people could be discussed are occupied by a traitor who is a Turkish national. Therefore, our street struggle has no alternative at this time.

Dear compatriots, we have reached a very important juncture. I am not just talking about our Movement. I am also talking about the state, the government of the day, and regional developments in general. At this point, everyone is planning their upcoming activities. Thus, the intelligence services of hostile countries openly declare and discuss how to neutralize our Movement. A group of traitors is thinking about how to retain power. Criminal cases are fabricated, persecution continues, political prisoners remain in custody. I repeat: their only support is the power structures.

I would like to tell you that all the tasks we spoke about from this rostrum are being worked on, all the questions you regularly raise, we have recorded and inventoried them all.

Dear Compatriots, the goals and objectives of the Resistance movement are clear. We must prevent the adoption of new surrender agreements that compel us to make vital concessions, which preclude any agreement without the direct participation of the people; I repeat, Nikol Pashinyan has no mandate to negotiate on behalf of the Armenian people.

Through popular disobedience, we will achieve the ouster of Nikol, whether through his resignation or dismissal. The struggle on these two tracks must run in parallel and complement each other. If we take the road of dismissal (impeachment), two legal requirements must be fulfilled: legal and political grounds for dismissal and the nomination of a candidate for prime minister by the people. The legal and political grounds for dismissing Nikol are clear and fully articulated, and the candidate nominated by the people will be decided together in this publication.

To avoid headlines in the press and unnecessary speculation, I emphasize that we will begin the process of dissolution with parliament when there are sufficient grounds for success. That is, any step and action will not be an end in itself.

Simply put, there are two ways to remove Nikol: resignation or dismissal, to achieve either of which requires a practical manifestation of popular public pressure.

It is the qualitative and quantitative level of the movement that will ultimately determine the effectiveness of our struggle.

The only path to success is the manifestation of popular demand and the practical steps that flow from it. Therefore, we must achieve this with purposeful, well-planned steps and actions," said Saghatelyan.

Adventures of an Azerbaijani in Armenia

  • Iraj Iskenderov

Azerbaijant travels to Armenia

“In the passport control queue at the Yerevan Zvartnots airport, which looks very spacious and somehow festive, my anxiety raised its head. I peered into the faces of the border guards, trying to guess which one of them was kinder. Then I was directed towards one of them. He scrutinized my national Russian passport. I think he grimaced at the sight of my last name, Mamedov.

But finally, I did hear: “Welcome to Armenia.”

When Muscovite Arslan [name altered] decided to visit Yerevan, some of his friends tried to dissuade him, considering it a risky step. Even though after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, thousands of Russians moved to Armenia, Arslan’s case is special. Despite his Russian citizenship, he is half Azerbaijani.

After the Karabakh conflict, which divided the societies of Armenia and Azerbaijan more than thirty years ago, citizens of both these countries visit each other only on official occasions. There are no diplomatic relations between the states, with Azerbaijan officially closing the border for Armenian citizens, while Armenia, though formally maintaining a visa-free regime for Azerbaijani citizens, only allows them to cross the border with a special permit. And were the borders open, it is unlikely for travel to become frequent, as the hostility in both societies is very high.

“My mother is a Moscow Tatar, and my father is an Azerbaijani who moved to Russia in the 1990s. He is quite a nationalist person.

Since childhood, my father’s worldview seemed alien and incomprehensible to me. Constant confrontations complicated our relationship. To me, the very idea of a conflict with the neighbours you had tea with only yesterday, seemed absurd, alien, and hostile since childhood.

When Russia declared war on Ukraine, it came as a shock to me, as it did to many others. I immediately decided to leave, assuming that a total purge of all living things would soon break out in Russia. Moreover, I am a journalist and have been involved in political activism for a long time. So the law “on fakes” adopted by the Russian authorities had a direct impact on me.

Besides, I thinks it’s high time to create some sort of an anti-war expat network, including in the South Caucasus.

That’s what I decided to do: unite all the anti-war initiatives that exist both among the expats and local residents. Unite activists, journalists, and people from the academic and creative spheres who oppose any wars and dictatorships.

The decision to go specifically to Armenia was a symbolic gesture of double denial.

My Russian citizenship seems to require me to be part of the war with Ukraine, and my ethnicity requires me to support Azerbaijan in the Karabakh conflict. I refuse to participate in conflicts and wars, because the identity of a “human” is more important to me than that of a “Russian”, “Armenian” or “Azerbaijani”.

“On our way from the airport, our taxi passed the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex (dedicated to the massacre of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey, which in Armenia and many Western countries is recognized as the Armenian Genocide). I tried to strike a conversation with the taxi driver:

This is beautiful!” I said.

Beautiful?!” he was indignant. “There is nothing beautiful here. These people are dead.

It’s like tragic music, beautiful but sad.” I don’t think the taxi driver quite understood what I meant.

When we arrived, my friend, an immigrant from Russia, came to pick me up. He paid for the taxi, and we went to his hotel room.

I suggested we take a walk. But he said he would not wander the streets of Yerevan with me. And he didn’t advise me to go out without any need, they would immediately recognize an Azerbaijani and… Basically, I should introduce myself as a Dagestani.

I laughed it off, but he did manage to intimidate me a little. However, I did not leave Russia to sit in a hotel room.

I settled in a hostel provided by the Kovcheg (The Ark) organization, which helps Russian expats. I stayed in Yerevan for about a month, barring a short trip to Russia to get my international passport.

All this time I kept meeting people and looking for like-minded antimilitarists.

Even in conversations with casual acquaintances, I tried to mention as often as possible that my father was an Azerbaijani, but I didn’t support Azerbaijan in this conflict.

However, in these cases,  I tried not to mention antimilitarism, only checking if the stereotyped image of Azerbaijanis could be changed.

And for the most part, people responded well.

There were a few unpleasant moments when I tensed up. One guy very persistently asked me about national identity, and who I considered myself to be. It was not aggression, he was asking in good humor, not understanding how it was possible not to have a national or ethnic identity. And I, in turn, wanted him to get rid of these limitations.

Another time, a man on the subway kept staring at me throughout the trip. As if he guessed by my appearance I was an Azerbaijani, although I don’t understand how this is possible.

I often went to cafes where local Bohemia and political migrants from Russia gathered. They had poetry evenings on political motives, played the songs of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, something more modern, and sometimes even some old Soviet repertoire, on the piano.

During my three-week stay in Yerevan, I probably met about a hundred people. I even managed to agree with some to write a joint anti-war manifesto.

I think that as a result of this trip I moved one step closer to my goal — to create an anti-war network — and made dozens of new acquaintances.

Sports: Request by 15 countries to move IBA Extraordinary Congress from Armenia turned down

  •

  •  Sunday,

  • A request to move the International Boxing Association (IBA) Extraordinary Congress from Yerevan has been turned down after a date for the event was set and registration opened.

A group of 15 countries, calling themselves the "Common Cause Alliance", wrote to the IBA Board of Directors urging them to relocate the event from Armenia’s capital, which it has now been announced is due to take place on September 25.

The Extraordinary Congress will be the second to be staged by IBA this year.

At the first in Istanbul in May, Russia’s Umar Kremlev was re-elected for a full four-year term as IBA President after his only rival, The Netherlands’ Boris van der Vorst, was declared ineligible on the eve of the event.

The Dutchman appealed against the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and won his case.

The Netherlands is among the group of countries to have called for the event to be moved.

Among the reasons the group of countries, who also included the United States, Australia, Switzerland, France, Canada, England and Ireland, have called for the move, is Armenia’s support of Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

"The Armenian Government is a close military and political ally of the Russian Government, which is currently conducting an illegal military invasion of Ukraine," they write.

"The Russian military is currently stationed in Armenia, including the Russian 102nd Military Base in Gyumri and the Russian 3624th Airbase in Erebuni Airport near Yerevan.

"The cooperation between the Armenian and Russian Governments is organised under the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

"Were these facts considered by the Board when making the decision to assign the hosting rights of the IBA Congress to the Armenian Boxing Federation?

"How could IBA allow the organisation of the IBA Congress in a country which stations the military that had violated the Olympic Truce and is still conducting an illegal invasion into a sovereign country?

"Therefore, we urge the IBA Board of Directors to address these facts and re-assign the IBA Extraordinary Congress hosting rights without delay.

"We believe that the optimal solution for the IBA would be to host this crucial IBA Congress in Lausanne, which is ‘the home and heart of the international boxing,’ according to the statement of the IBA President at the June 24 2022, IBA Board Meeting."

But IBA have claimed they could not have awarded the Extraordinary Congress to Switzerland as it was not among the 10 countries who bid to host it.

"IBA Board of Directors has already taken the decision about the date and place for the Congress, and IBA head office has opened the NFs (National Federations) registration process accordingly," a spokesperson for IBA told insidethegames.

"IBA Board of Directors has examined different bids and chosen the best suitable solution that satisfies all necessary requirements.

"Neither city of Lausanne nor Switzerland did not come up with a bidding proposal, therefore, the country was not considered."

Umar Kremlev has urged countries to register for the IBA Extraordinary Congress ©IBA

The main agenda of this Extraordinary Congress is for the National Federations to decide on the necessity of the new Presidential elections, which is seen as crucial to the future of IBA.

Shortly after the CAS ruling in favour of van der Vorst, the International Olympic Committee announced that IBA would once again be stripped of the rights to organise the boxing tournament at Paris 2024.

"I encourage all National Federations to register for the upcoming Congress because in our fight for good governance, IBA strives for absolute transparency when it comes to important decisions such as a Presidential election," Kremlev said.

Asbarez: Young Dutch-Armenian Banned from Entering Armenia

    Suneh Abrahamian

A young Armenian from the Netherlands reported that after waiting at Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan for nearly 12 hours, Armenia’s security officials told her that she was banned from entering the country and was considered a persona non-grata.

Suneh Abrahamian, wrote on her Facebook page on Sunday that she had gone to Armenia to participate in a camp in Syunik organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Youth Office.

“Yesterday evening upon arriving at the airport in Armenia to participate in the ARF Youth Office voluntary camps in Syunik, I was immediately put in a small room and interrogated. After taking my passport and keeping me for 12 hours without any explanation, I was informed that my entry to my homeland was rejected and I am a persona non grata for the Armenian authorities. Words cannot describe the disappointment and pain I feel for being denied my homeland. Currently I am waiting at the airport to return to the Netherlands,” said Abrahamian in her Facebook post, adding that she is a member of the Garegin Njdeh Armenian Youth Federation chapter of the Netherlands.

Abrahamian is the second Diapora Armenian whose entry has been banned to Armenia by the authorities.

On July 14, Mourad Papazian, a member of the ARF Bureau and a co-chair the Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations in France (CCAF) was similarly turned back at Zvartonts International Airport.

Weeks later, the Armenian government explained that the reason for Papazian’s ban was his alleged active role in a protest against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan while he was visiting Paris in June 2021. Papazian had traveled to Armenia at least on four occasion since June 2021, the most recent of which was in May when he accompanied Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo to Armenia for an official visit.

On Thursday Papazian announced that a complaint has already been filed on his behalf to reverse the decision.

Upon Papazian’s dismissal from Armenia, the ARF Bureau, the CCAF as well as the ARF Western U.S. Central Committee issued statements condemning the government’s actions, with the latter emphasizing that the Armenian government does not have the right to refuse entry to any Armenian.

According to Ishkhan Saghatelyan, regional visits by members of the movement will continue throughout August.
