YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan had a meeting with Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Vahram Dumanyan, the Presidential Office said.

The Minister introduced the President on the ongoing activities, the strategic directions of education system reforms and the future plans.

The meeting also touched upon the general results of university entrance exams in Armenia in 2022.

Views were exchanged also on the current programs in sport and culture fields.

Mher Ohanyan wins Armenia’s first gold at 7th Children of Asia International Sports Games

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. Sambist Mher Ohanyan won Armenia’s first gold medal at the 7th Children of Asia International Sports Games in the 64kg division of sambo tournament, the ministry of sport said.

Meanwhile, Nare Melkumyan had won silver in the shooting competition, and Gagik Nikoghosyan won bronze.

More than 1300 athletes aged 13-16 from Armenia, Afghanistan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Lebanon are participating in the championship.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani Armed Forces grossly violated the ceasefire and opened mortar and drone fire at Artsakh Defense Army positions since 09:00 August 3.

The Artsakh Defense Ministry said that 7 Defense Army soldiers were wounded in the Azeri attack. One of the wounded soldiers is seriously injured while the other 6 are out of danger.

The Artsakh authorities said they are taking measures jointly with the Russian peacekeeping contingent to stabilize the situation.

UPDATES: 

15:57 – Artsakh's military reports that 1 of its soldiers was killed and the number of wounded troops is 8.




Russia records 14,638 daily COVID-19 cases

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. Russia’s COVID-19 case tally rose by 14,638 over the past day to 18,636,741, TASS reports citing the anti-coronavirus crisis center.

In absolute terms, the growth rate has been the highest since April 6, when 14,661 cases were recorded.

Russia’s COVID-19 recoveries rose by 10,266 over the past day, reaching 18,000,314.

A day earlier some 8,573 patients recovered.

Russia’s COVID-19 death toll rose by 43 over the past day, reaching 382,560.

A day earlier 48 COVID-19 deaths were registered.

In 2022 Armenia hosted tourists mainly from Russia, Iran and Germany

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. 590,000 tourists visited Armenia in the first half of 2022, Sisian Boghossian, the Chair of the Tourism Committee, told a press conference in Armenpress, adding that this figure has significantly increased compared to the same period of the previous year.

“Most tourists visit Armenia from our targeted markets – Russia (around 56%). Then, it is followed by Iran, Germany, Georgia and the United States. We are trying to activate both our traditional targeted markets and attract new directions with different tourism products and offers”, she said.

Sisian Boghossian said that tourism figures in Armenia have greatly declined because of COVID-19, but the activeness of this year shows that the rates are gradually restoring. She stated that they have targeted France and the United Arab Emirates as new directions in terms of attracting tourists to Armenia. Active works are expected on this direction. The procedure of obtaining visa has already been facilitated for the UAE citizens. Recently, Armenia has also facilitated visa procedures for the citizens of Egypt. Mutual cognitive visits for tour operators are expected soon.

From the perspective of attracting tourists, importance is attached to the diversification of a tourism result and the holding of major events, tournaments and concerts.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. One Artsakh soldier was killed and 8 others were wounded in the latest Azerbaijani attack, the Artsakh Ministry of Defense said.

The Azerbaijani forces used combat UAVs in the attack in the north-western section of the line of contact around 15:00.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. On August 3, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan received the personal representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk, the foreign ministry said in a press release.  

Ararat Mirzoyan presented to Andrzej Kasprzyk the security situation that unfolded in the region during the last few days.

Minister Mirzoyan condemned the arbitrary interpretation of trilateral statements and attempts to destabilize the situation by Azerbaijan, stressing the importance of the targeted assessments of the situation by the international community and, particularly, by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries. The constructive position of the Armenian side aimed at the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was reiterated.

Armenia State Revenue Committee Chairman meets with EBRD Yerevan Office Head

YEREVAN, AUGUST 3, ARMENPRESS. Chairman of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia Rustam Badasyan met today with head of the Yerevan Resident Office of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) George Akhalkatsi and his delegation, the SRC said in a press release.

The sides praised the current level of cooperation and touched upon the further steps and measures of the ongoing joint programs. The process of the program of upgrading Meghri border checkpoint was also discussed at the meeting. The sides expressed hope that the construction process will launch in September.

The SRC Chairman and the EBRD Yerevan Office representatives also discussed the possibilities of funding through the EBRD the construction of an external economic activity center and a customs laboratory in Syunik province under the EU investment plan.

Rustam Badasyan said that these two projects – the upgrading of Meghri checkpoint and creation of the external economic activity center, will complement each other by giving a new and a high quality to the fulfillment of customs administration.

EUR exchange rate down by 2.07 drams to 414.10 drams. Russian Ruble exchange rate stood at 6.74 drams. GBP exchange rate down by 1.36 drams to 495.14 drams.

The Central Bank has set the following prices for precious metals.

Gold price up by 64.70 drams to 23255.47 drams. Silver price down by 1.28 drams to 265.71 drams. Platinum price stood at 16414.1 drams.
