At a rally, more than 50 Stepanakert townspeople have urged Russian authorities to influence Azerbaijan in order to achieve de-escalation of the Karabakh conflict and ensure local residents' safety.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 3, Azerbaijan announced a "Retribution" operation in Nagorno-Karabakh in response to the murder of an Azerbaijani serviceman. The MoD also reported that the Azerbaijani Army had captured a number of dominant heights. Baku demanded an immediate removal of Armenian militaries from Nagorno-Karabakh and threatened "even more destructive countermeasures" in case of provocations on the contact line. The authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh called for the world community to respond to Baku's actions. In the evening on August 4, the Russian MoD announced that the peacemakers registered four violations of the ceasefire regime in Nagorno-Karabakh during the day.

The Stepanakert rally was held on August 5 in Renaissance Square, in front of the residence of the President of Nagorno-Karabakh. The participants came with posters and called on the Russian authorities to demand from Azerbaijan to fulfil all the points of the tripartite agreement dated November 9-10, 2020, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has reported.

More than 50 people gathered by the start of the rally, Arthur Osipyan, one of the organizers of the action, the leader of the "My Right" movement, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"After the [2020] war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that thanks to the Russian peacemaking contingent, Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh would live in security and with dignity. Today, we want to understand Russia's role in the region and demand from Russia to force Azerbaijan to comply with the provisions of the tripartite agreement," Mr Osipyan has stated.

Stepanakert states Baku's demand to use highway bypassing Lachin Corridor
Azerbaijan has demanded from Nagorno-Karabakh authorities to organize traffic along the new route bypassing the Lachin Corridor, the president of the unrecognized republic has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 29, the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure announced that in August the construction of a road bypassing the Lachin Corridor and linking Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia would begin.

According to the agreement signed by Aliev, Pashinyan and Putin, Armenia transferred the territory of the Lachin District to Azerbaijan. In June 2022, the Azerbaijan State Highway Agency reported that the construction of the 32-kilometre-long Azerbaijani section of the road continues at an accelerated pace and is scheduled to be completed this year. The transfer of Lachin (the Armenian name is Berdzor) under Azerbaijan's control was delayed due to the absence of an alternative road from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. After the launch of this road, Lachin will be transferred to Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani experts explained in July.

On August 2, Araik Arutyunyan, the Nagorno-Karabakh President, convened an expanded sitting of the Security Council with the participation of MPs of the National Assembly, at which it was announced that Azerbaijan had demanded, via the Russian peacemaking contingent, "to organize traffic along the new route in the near future."

The demand of the Azerbaijani party means that "Azerbaijan will promptly set up a checkpoint in the highway section running to Berdzor, Akhavno and Sus," Tigran Abraamyan, a military expert and a former adviser to the ex-president of Nagorno-Karabakh, has suggested.

Baku threatened to toughen its actions in Nagorno-Karabakh

Caucasian Knot
Aug 4 2022
Azerbaijan has demanded an immediate removal of Armenian militaries from Nagorno-Karabakh and threatened "even more destructive countermeasures" in case of provocations on the contact line separating the troops. The Nagorno-Karabakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has demanded the reaction of the world community to Baku's actions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that, according to Azerbaijan, the "Retribution" operation was held on August 3 in Nagorno-Karabakh in response to the murder of an Azerbaijani serviceman.

During the "Retribution" operation, Azerbaijani militaries destroyed a large amount of ammunition, vehicles and several D-30 howitzers, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed.

Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated that, "contrary to the tripartite declaration, the presence of the Armenia Armed Forces and illegal Armenian armed formations in the territories of Azerbaijan," where Russian peacemakers are temporarily stationed, "remains a source of danger."

The MoD has promised that any action will be followed by retaliatory measures. "Any terrorist acts and armed provocations committed in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan will be resolutely suppressed; and countermeasures will be even more destructive," the MoD's press release says.

"A new round of Azerbaijan's aggressive actions" was condemned by Nagorno-Karabakh's MFA. Azerbaijan's actions are "a gross attempt to violate peace and stability in the region, as well as to discredit the peacemaking mission," the MFA said in its statement.

The MFA has called on the international community "to give a targeted assessment of Azerbaijan's actions and take appropriate steps to curb the destructive policy of the official Baku," the statement says.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on August 3, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Azerbaijan announced the conduct of the “Retribution” operation in Nagorno-Karabakh in response to the murder of a military man. The MoD of Azerbaijan also reported that it occupied the dominant heights. The Russian Ministry of Defence blamed Azerbaijan for violating the ceasefire.

When commenting on the statement voiced by the Prime Minister of Armenia about the actions of the Russian peacekeepers, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov has stated that the contacts between Russia and Armenia will help clarify issues related to the actions of peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Russian Presidential Press Secretary has also emphasized that the Kremlin is “very closely watching” the events in Nagorno-Karabakh. “Naturally, we are concerned about the aggravation of the situation. We call on the parties to exercise restraint and, most importantly, to comply with all the provisions of the well-known trilateral documents,” Dmitry Peskov said.

Over the last 24 hours, the positions of the Azerbaijani Army were shelled 12 times; three of them – from the territory of Armenia, and nine – from Karabakh, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed. Its Nagorno-Karabakh counterpart claims that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces violated the ceasefire regime by using small arms.

"Over the past 24 hours, Armenian armed formations shelled the positions of the Azerbaijani Army for 12 times in total," the press service of the Azeri MoD has stated this morning.

According to the MoD, three times the border positions of the Azerbaijani Army in the directions of the Kelbadjar and Lachin Districts were shelled from the territory of Armenia. "The remaining nine incidents have to do with periodic shelling of Azeri positions located in the territory where Russian peacemakers are temporarily stationed; the shelling was conducted from sniper rifles and various small arms," the Azeri MoD said in its statement.

There are no losses among the personnel and equipment of the Azerbaijani Army.

In its turn, the Nagorno-Karabakh MoD reported a tense situation on the contact line. "On August 4, at night on August 5 and in the morning as of 9:00 a.m., the operative-tactical situation on the contact line was relatively stable, but tension remains. In some directions, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces violated the ceasefire regime by using small arms. There are no losses from the Armenian party," the "Interfax" quotes the MoD's press service.

Residents of Karabakh villages outraged by demand to leave their homes

Caucasian Knot
Aug 5 2022
Residents of Berdzor blocked the road after a meeting with the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures of Nagorno-Karabakh, at which the official announced that the people are to leave their houses in the communities of Berdzor, Akhavno, and Sous by August 25. The protest action of the residents stopped after the authorities promised that the government of Nagorno-Karabakh would assist in the move.

Today, Hayk Khanumyan, Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures of Nagorno-Karabakh has received the residents of the communities of Akhavno, Sous, and Berdzor in the Kashatag District. At the meeting, Hayk Khanumyan said that the residents of the communities needed to leave the villages by August 25, since the Lachin corridor would be handed over to the Azerbaijani side, the “Re:public of Artsakh” Telegram channel reported.

Anna Mangasaryan, a resident of the Sous community, noted that she was “outraged by such an attitude towards people.” “How can you just kick people out of their houses so easily? I’m just embarrassed. Where should we go, how will we support our family, and where will we live?” Anna Mangasaryan told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

The residents of Berdzor blocked the road in protest. They demand that the Lachin corridor should remain under the protection of Russian peacekeepers and that people should not be forced to leave their houses.

The protest action began after a meeting with Minister Hayk Khanumyan, Berdzor Mayor Narek Aleksanyan confirmed. “The people blocked the road, as they were full of emotions. But after some time, when the city authorities talked to them and explained the situation, the people heard us. As a result, the road was opened,” the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent was told by Narek Aleksanyan.

“In the following days, the families must decide where they want to move in order for the government to help them move. Furthermore, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia promised to provide financial assistance to all families who now live in Berdzor, Sous, and Akhavno,” Berdzor Mayor said.

Azerbaijan Launched “Revenge” Operation Against Armenia, Artsakh

Aug 6 2022

08/06/2022 Nagorno-Karabakh (International Christian Concern) – Beginning on August 1, tensions flared again between Azerbaijan and the historically Christian nation of Armenia over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenian: Artsakh), nearly two years since the war that left the region struggling. As a result, Azerbaijan killed two soldiers from the de-facto Artsakh Republic forces and injured 14 others in a drone operation titled “Revenge”.

On August 1, Azerbaijani Armed Forces attempted to cross the borders in several places. The advances were stopped with no casualties, though the situation remained tense. On August 3, Azerbaijani forces targeted the Armenian and Artsakh forces with mortars, grenade launchers and UAVs. Azerbaijan claimed Armenia fails to fulfill the ceasefire obligations, while the Russian Defense Ministry, the peacekeepers following the 2020 war, stated that Azerbaijan committed three ceasefire violations within a 24-hour period on Tuesday.

Not long after the deadly attack, Armenian residents of Artsakh’s Aghavno and Berdzor villages were ordered to leave their homes by August 25. Residents continue to protest and remain adamant that they will not leave. The two villages are part of the Lachin corridor, the sole land route connecting Armenia and Artsakh, and were among the only towns in the disputed territory not forcibly displaced during the 2020 war. The Lachin corridor was set to be handed over to Azerbaijan in November 2023 once Armenia was able to build a new road and is patrolled by Russian peacekeepers in the meantime.

Blinken urges Azerbaijani president and Armenian prime minister for «direct dialogue»

Aug 5 2022
Daniel Stewart
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged in two phone calls with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, respectively, to start a "direct dialogue" to address the situation in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

n this regard, Blinken called for de-escalation, while stressing that Washington is closely following the renewed clashes in the region, State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron also asked his Azeri counterpart during a telephone conversation on Friday to "do everything possible to avoid an increase in tension" and to push forward negotiations with the Armenian government.

For his part, the U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Michael Carpenter, has previously urged to take "urgent measures to de-escalate the tension and avoid an escalation" of the conflict.

Earlier on Friday, Armenian authorities accused Azeri forces of violating the cease-fire on the Nagorno-Karabakh contact line, the Defense Ministry of the self-proclaimed republic said in a statement.

The alert by the Armenian authorities comes after two Armenian and one Azeri soldiers were killed in clashes near the region on August 3. In addition, 19 other soldiers were wounded, three of whom are in serious condition.
