Up to +42 degrees Celsius forecast in Armenia with approach of new heat wave

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. Air temperature in Armenia will increase by 6-8 degrees Celsius over the next 5 days due to an incoming heat wave from Iraq, meteorologists said.

Furthermore, from August 15th to 19th the temperature is expected to reach +40-42 degrees Celsius in Yerevan and in parts of Aragatsotn and Vayots Dzor provinces, as well as in the Ararat Valley, the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center said, warning of wildfire dangers associated with the heat wave and absence of rains.

Number of victims injured at Crimea airfield blast rises to 13 — regional authorities say

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. The number of people who suffered injuries in explosions at an airfield in Crimea’s Novofyodorovka settlement has risen to 13, TASS reported citing a statement from the regional health authorities.

"As of 8:30 am on , one person was killed and 13 people suffered injuries in an incident in the Novofyodorovka settlement, the Saki District," the statement reads.

According to the ministry, ten of the injured, including two underage children, received outpatient care at the Saki District Hospital, one patient was taken to the hospital and another two people were provided with outpatient care at a hospital in the Crimean capital of Simferopol.

The cause of the blast is under investigation.

Efforts are underway to establish the cause of the explosions. The Russian Defense Ministry said that there had been no "fire impact" on the airfield. Head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Tourism Zarina Doguzova pointed out that Crimea’s tourism facilities continued to operate normally.

Artsakh Security Council Secretary visits Berdzor to inspect construction of new route

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. The Secretary of the Security Council of Artsakh Vitaly Balasanyan visited Berdzor together with representatives of the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the Azerbaijani military, his office confirmed to ARMENPRESS when asked to comment on reports about the trip.

Asked to explain the reason of the visit, Balasanyan’s office said: “The visit of the Secretary of the Security Council to Berdzor was conducted to get acquainted with the course of construction of the new route linking Artsakh with Armenia envisaged under the November 9, 2020 trilateral statement, and the visit took place jointly with the Russian peacekeeping contingent deployed in the Republic of Artsakh, as well as representatives of the Azerbaijani side.”

Balasanyan’s office said he did not visit Aghavno or Nerkin Sus.

Russia records 23,771 daily COVID-19 cases, new high since March 26

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. Russia’s COVID-19 case tally rose by 23,771 over the past day to 18,770,657, the anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Wednesday, TASS reports.

In absolute terms, the growth rate has been the highest since March 26, when 24,072 daily cases were recorded.

As many as 2,666 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Russia over the past day, up 3.6% from a day earlier. The number of hospitalized patients increased in 41 regions, while in 38 regions the figure decreased. The situation remained unchanged in six regions. A day earlier, 2,574 people were rushed to hospitals.

Moscow’s COVID-19 cases surged by 8,608 over the past day versus 4,781 cases a day earlier, reaching 2,877,323, according to the anti-coronavirus crisis center. St. Petersburg’s COVID-19 cases increased by 2,894 over the past day versus 2,639 a day earlier, reaching 1,575,669.

COVID-19 recoveries

Russia’s COVID-19 recoveries rose by 14,552 over the past day, reaching 18,075,720, the anti-coronavirus crisis center told reporters on Wednesday.

A day earlier some 13,092 patients recovered.

COVID-19 death toll

Russia’s COVID-19 death toll rose by 56 over the past day, reaching 382,902, the anti-coronavirus crisis center told reporters on Wednesday.

A day earlier 60 COVID-19 deaths were registered.

Traffic restored at Yerevan-Yeraskh-Goris-Meghri-Iran road section after crash

Traffic was at the abovementioned section due to a car crash earlier on August 10.

Over 100 people signed up for Prime Minister’s Cup Swimming Tournament in Lake Sevan

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. Over 100 people have signed up to participate in the Prime Minister’s Cup Amateur Swimming Tournament which will take place on August 23 in Sevan.

The tournament will be held in Lake Sevan near Shoghakat community, Davit Baghumyan, the Head of the Department of Sports Policy at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports said at a press conference.

Preparations are actively underway, he said.

Rescue Services, lifeguards, police and ambulance crews will be on patrol to ensure the safety of participants.

Registrations are open until August 15.

As of the latest data, the oldest person to have signed up for participation in the women’s division is 73 years old, and in the men’s division 81 years old.

Baghumyan said that there is big interest for the Prime Minister’s Cup sports tournaments among the society.

In the Prime Minister’s Cup table tennis edition, more than 1600 people took part, and over 1700 students competed in the school team running tournament.

Another running edition of the Prime Minister’s Cup is expected to take place on the 20th of September.

Iraqi Kurdistan Minister of Culture and Youth visits Armenian National Academy of Sciences

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Armenia hosted the delegation led by Mohammad Said Ali, the Minister of Culture and Youth of Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Armenian Consul-General to Erbil Arshak Manukyan, NAS presidency members and research fellows from the NAS Institute of Oriental Studies and Institute of Arts participated in the meeting, NAS said in a statement. 

NAS Institute of Oriental Studies Director Robert Ghazaryan spoke about the history of the Armenian-Kurdish relations and the results of studies conducted in the institute in relation to development of Kurdish studies.

Professor Anna Asatryan, the Acting Director of the NAS Institute of Arts, presented a report on the Armenian-Kurdish cultural contacts. She presented Armenian composer Komitas’ work on Kurdish folk songs.

Minister Mohammad Said Ali presented the Iraqi Kurdistan government’s policy in culture and attached importance to the strengthening of the Armenian-Kurdish cultural ties, as well as the historic contacts of the two peoples. The minister expressed hope that the Armenian-Kurdish cultural and scientific ties will be intensified.

Intensification of ties between the NAS institutes with cultural and scientific organizations of Iraqi Kurdistan were highlighted.

The meeting was organized by the NAS Oriental Studies Institute and the Armenian Consulate-General in Erbil.

Armenia’s press freest in region – Reporters without Borders Index

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. Armenia has the freest press in the region, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Reporters Without Borders Released its 2022 Edition of World Press Freedom Index where Armenia improved its ranking by 12 notches and is now 51st.

Armenia’s neighbors Georgia is 89th, Iran is 178th, Turkey is 149th and Azerbaijan is 154th. 

In the post-Soviet space Armenia is behind only Moldova and Baltic states in the ranking.
