Tombs of Hellenistic period discovered in Artsakh

A group of tombs dated between I-II B.C. has been found during the agricultural works carried out in “Khachin Tap” area of Artsakh’s Askeran region. 

As the Artsakh Republic “Protection Service for Historical Environment” NCSO reports, during the excavation works held on August 24-25, led by archeologist Vardges Safaryan, it was established that the tombs belong to the Hellenistic period as evidenced by the discovered decorated earthenware pottery which were characteristic of the Hellenistic age and resembled the pottery discovered in another archeological site of Tigranakert in Artsakh and other sites in Armenia.

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister, topical issues related to the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict in the context of the implementation of the agreements provided by the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020 and January 11, 2021 were discussed, as well as the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

An agreement was reached to continue further contacts at different levels.

STEPANAKERT, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS. Artsakh’s Minister of Labor, Social and Migration Affairs Mane Tandilyan has announced on social media that she is going to resign on September 1.

Mrs. Tandilyan informed that from September 1 she will continue her service to Artsakh within the frames of the activity of “Artsakh To Live” foundation which will implement numerous programs in Artsakh.

“Nearly 80% of the population of Artsakh has returned to live. This means that Artsakh is getting rid of the post-war social-psychological burden and stands on the development and strengthening path which became possible due to work and commitment. Now it’s the time for long-term programs and economic boost”, she said in a statement.

Tandilyan thanked all her colleagues in the government, the ministry staff for the joint work and for the opportunity to serve Artsakh.

Death toll in Kazakhstan military base explosion rises to 13

YEREVAN, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS. The death toll at the ammunition warehouse fire and explosion at the military base in Kazakhstan went up to 13, TASS reports citing the Kazakhstan Emergency Ministry.

The search for three more people is underway.

The total number of those injured in the explosion is 98, among them are 50 Emergency Ministry personnel.

On August 26, 2021 a fire broke out at a warehouse at military base in the Bayzak district of the Zhambyl region, at about 19:00. The fire resulted in more than 10 explosions. The Emergency Ministry organized the evacuation of nearby villages and military recruits.

Armenian FM to discuss implementation of trilateral agreements with Russia’s Lavrov in Moscow

YEREVAN, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan will depart for Moscow on a working visit on August 31 to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

During his first foreign visit after appointment the Armenian FM will discuss issues with his Russian counterpart relating to taking further actions to develop the Armenian-Russian allied relations in various areas, expanding the partnership in common integration unions, such as the CIS, CSTO and EAEU, as well as coordinating the positions in the UN, CSTO and other international organizations.

“The implementation process of the agreements signed by the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on 2020 November 9 and 2021 January 11, including the humanitarian issues and the unblocking of economic and transportation ties in the South Caucasus will be discussed.

We expect that the talks in Moscow will contribute to the mutual allied partnership with Yerevan, the strengthening of security and stability in the region”, the Russian foreign ministry’s statement says.

EU reiterates readiness to contribute to durable and comprehensive settlement of NK conflict – Josep Borrell

Vice-President of the European Commission, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell sent a congratulatory message to Ararat Mirzoyan on the occasion of assuming the position of the Foreign Minister of Armenia, the ministry told Armenpress.

The message reads:

I would like to congratulate you on your appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. Armenia is an important partner of the European Union. Our relations have intensified significantly since 2018 and the entry into force of our Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement on 1 March 2021 was another important, positive milestone. The implementation of this agreement is a central part of our bilateral relations and we stand ready to continue cooperating in areas of mutual interest, including strengthening democracy, the rule of law and human rights, jobs and business opportunities, the environment, better education and opportunities for research.

Your appointment comes at a crucial time for Armenia. Air temperature to rise in Armenia by 3-4 degrees

The highest temperatures are expected in Syunik and Yerevan.

No precipitation is expected in Armenia in the daytime of August 28, on August 29-31 and September 1-2.

Russian peacekeepers ensure safe transfer of construction materials, equipment in Artsakh

YEREVAN, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS. The Russian peacekeepers in Artsakh have ensured the safe transfer of construction equipment, materials for restoration of infrastructure of houses and food.

The military policy division of the Russian peacekeeping troops accompanied the vehicles which transferred the material and equipment on route Shushi-Karmir Shuka, the Russian defense ministry said.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian sent on August 28 a letter of condolences to President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the occasion of the explosion at a military base in Zhambyl region, the Armenian President’s Office said.

“Please accept my deepest condolences over the tragedy in Zhambyl region which resulted in the deaths of servicemen and rescuers. Undoubtedly, their heroism is a worthy example of adherence to the military service duty”, the letter sent by the Armenian President says.

President Sarkissian expressed his support to the families of the victims, and a speedy recovery to the injured.

Russian border guards to control Vorotan and Nor Arajadzor road sections – Head of Kapan community

The head of Kapan community Gevorg Parsyan informs that no changes of traffic flow have been made on Goris-Shurnukh-Kapan section of the M2 interstate highway in southern Syunik province. 

To remind, the interstate road, leading from Goris to Kapan, was unblocked late on Friday after it had been shut down by Azerbaijani servicemen on August 25. 

“Concrete road buffers have been placed on Vorotan and Nor Arajadzor sections to slow down the traffic. The mentioned sections of the road will be controlled by Russian border guards,” Parsyan said.
