Coronavirus: Armenian CDC reports 239 new cases, 13 deaths

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. 239 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded over the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total number of confirmed cases to 245,264, the Armenian Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

4307 tests were administered.

13 patients died, bringing the death toll to 4924. This number doesn’t include the deaths of 1164 other people infected with the virus who died from co-morbidities.

A total of 229,559 people recovered so far (446 in the last 24 hours).

As of September 6, 11:00 the number of active cases stood at 9617.

Ex-president Serzh Sargsyan files libel lawsuit against lawmaker Khachatur Sukiasyan

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. Third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has filed a libel lawsuit against Member of Parliament Khachatur Sukiasyan.

The ex-president’s lawyer Amram Makinyan said they demand Sukiasyan to retract his statements in the parliament chambers.

“This is a rather comprehensive lawsuit, we’ve presented all substantiations with which we are sure the court will satisfy our lawsuit and will oblige Khachatur Sukiasyan to refute the information,” Makinyan said.

Ruling party MP Khachatur Sukiasyan, while delivering a speech in parliament, had claimed that the former president had “gambled away more than 100 million dollars”.

Aliyev Administration says “some debates” ongoing over legal mechanisms for Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s assistant Hikmet Hajiyev says there are ongoing discussions over additional legal mechanisms regarding the Russian peacekeeping mandate in Nagorno Karabakh.

Around 2000 Russian peacekeepers are deployed in Nagorno Karabakh in accordance with the Russia-brokered 2020 Nagorno Karabakh ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Hajiyev, who is also the Aliyev Administration’s Head of Foreign Policy, told BBC that the ceasefire agreement defined “a political and in some sense also a legal framework” for the peacekeeping forces. “As far as the additional agreements and additional legal mechanisms regarding the peacekeepers’ mandate, the sides have had initial contacts over this issue and some debates are still ongoing,” Hajiyev said.

“Armenia” faction again nominates MP Ghazinyan for deputy chair of standing committee on defense

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. The “Armenia” faction of Parliament has again nominated MP Artur Ghazinyan’s candidacy for the position of deputy chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on defense and security affairs.

During the committee’s session faction secretary Artsvik Minasyan introduced Artur Ghazinyan and stated that he is the best candidate for the position.

Earlier, Ghazinyan failed to be elected as deputy chair of the committee. Members of the committee from the ruling Civil Contract faction voted against his candidacy, citing his statements made earlier.

Netherlands to assist Armenia in judicial reforms: Ambassador, Justice Minister hold meeting

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. The Kingdom of the Netherlands is ready to assist Armenia in its ongoing reforms in the judiciary, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Armenia Nico Schermers said at the meeting with Justice Minister Karen Andreasyan.

The justice ministry reports that Karen Andreasyan and Nico Schermers discussed the cooperation between the two countries during their meeting.

The Ambassador was interested in the ministry’s priorities and stated that the Netherlands is open to all proposals.

The minister presented the five big wishes connected with the justice field, directed for the reforms of Constitution, correctional and probation systems, digitization of judicial system, etc.

He stated that all these are big areas, and the reforms in these fields without the support of international partners would be difficult.

The Ambassador of the Netherlands expressed readiness to deepen the cooperation in a number of directions.

Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan and his delegation departed for Austria on a three-day working visit to take part in the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and the First Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter-Terrorism in Vienna, the Parliament said today.

The Conference will officially launch on September 7 in a format of panel discussions.

The topics will relate to the issues of the parliaments, human rights and their full exercise, COVID-19 pandemic, etc.

Armenian Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan will deliver remarks at the First Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter-Terrorism, presenting the study about the rights and needs of those affected from terrorism.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. The first deliveries from a pledge of 4 million doses to be donated to COVAX by The Belgian Development Cooperation have arrived, with 187,200 doses of the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine shipped to Armenia on 5 September, Gavi reports.

“The only way to defeat this pandemic is through international cooperation. This week, Belgium shares 187,200 AstraZeneca doses with Armenia through COVAX vaccine sharing mechanism. No one is safe until everyone is safe,” said Meryame Kitir, Minister of Development Cooperation and Major Cities Policy.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s Ministry of Healthcare has approved the Russian single-component Sputnik Light vaccine against coronavirus, the Russian Direct Investment Fund said in a statement.

“Sputnik Light vaccine based on human adenovirus serotype 26 is the first component of the Sputnik V vaccine. Immunization with Sputnik Light will help Armenia to significantly reduce the infection rate in the country and create herd immunity in a short time frame. In February 2021 the two-dose Sputnik V vaccine was also approved in Armenia”, the statement says.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, ARMENPRESS. A total of 303,325 vaccinations against COVID-19 have been carried out in Armenia so far, of which the first dose is 195,290 and the second dose – 108,035, the ministry of healthcare reports.

Vaccinations with AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm and CoronaVac (second dose only) in Armenia are available for people aged over 18.

Vaccinations are carried out on voluntary basis.

The Central Bank has set the following prices for precious metals.

Gold price up by 167.00 drams to 28934.37 drams. Silver price down by 1.88 drams to 381.65 drams. Platinum price up by 89.73 drams to 15960.94 drams.
