More and more people in Azerbaijan are expressing a desire to learn the Armenian language after the 44-day war in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) in 2020.

Students of the Armenian language course are mostly employees of the State Security Service, diplomats, journalists and economists, Sputnik Azerbaijan reports.

Husein Askerov, a lecturer at the Chair of the Caucasus Studies of the Azerbaijani University of Languages, says he does not have “enough time and energy” to enroll everyone who wants to study Armenian.

Sometimes classes have to be held late in the evening, Askerov said, adding they are usually held remotely.

Opposition MP: Handover of Sanasar and Kovsakan to Azerbaijan didn’t stem from trilateral statement

The handover of the districts of Sanasar and Kovsakan to Azerbaijan did not stem from the November 9 trilateral statement of Yerevan, Moscow and Baku, opposition With Honor faction MP and security expert Tigran Abrahamyan told a briefing in the Armenian parliament on Friday.

He underlined that the November 9 document clearly stated that the parties were to stop in their “current positions” and stipulated the surrender of only three districts – Akna, Kashatagh and Karvachar – to Azerbaijan.

“If the administrative-territorial division in the Soviet period is taken as a basis, at the time three different districts were part of Kashatagh: Lachin, Kubatulu and Zangelan. Even if we follow this logic, it’s obvious that parts of those two districts which were under our control were not subject to surrender, otherwise it does not fit into the logic of the November 9 statement,” Abrahamyan stressed.

The lawmaker called attention to the fact that there were no talks on the details of the Goris-Kapan road when those territories were ceded to Azerbaijan.

“No one took into account the problems that may arise after the handover of those territories. As for the statements that if they had not been surrendered, a war would have erupted, Azerbaijan likewise may demand the handover of Vardenis, Goris, Kapan or Meghri. Should the Armenian authorities follow the same principle and hand over those districts, citing the risk of renewed war?” Abrahamyan said.

The oppositionist stressed there will be no chance of success if the authorities stick to this principle.

Armenia parliament new inquiry committee’s work will be productive without majority faction, says opposition MP

News.am, Armenia

The work of the new National Assembly (NA) inquiry committee will be productive without the participation of the majority “Civil Contract” Faction. Opposition “Armenia” Faction MP—and a lawyer by profession—Aram Vardevanyan, who plans to head this committee, noted about this Friday during the traditional briefings at the NA.

The lawmaker reiterated that this committee was set up by the virtue of law, which means that in any case it will work, summon representatives of relevant organizations, ask them questions, and study all the processes that have ever taken place.

“As a result of the work, the committee will issue a report. I believe it is even good that they [i.e., the majority faction MPs] will not be [in this committee]. Thus, they will not put pressure on the officials we intend to summon [for questioning]. They can speak undisturbedly and openly,” Vardevanyan said.

He added that the committee’s report will be publicized and sent to international organizations.
