Armenian PM: Problem of Iranian trucks traveling to Yerevan solved

Armenian Prime Minister Niko Pashinyan has said Iranian trucks can use the Tatev-Aghvani alternative road to travel to the Republic of Azerbaijan without paying customs duties from now on. Pashinyan was speaking at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Thursday.

He said by launching the new Tatev-Aghvani road in southern Armenia as an alternative to the Goris-Kapan road in the part controlled by the Republic of Azerbaijan, the transportation of Iranian cargo has been facilitated.

He added after Azerbaijan notified Armenia that it will conduct inspections of Armenian and Iranian citizens and vehicles in the part of the Goris-Kapan road which is under its control, Armenia decided to build an alternative route.

“Yesterday we learned trhough an unofficial announcement from Azerbaijan that they intend to impose customs and passport controls on Armenian citizens and vehicles from midnight on November 11, so we decided to manage traffic and facilitate the movement of our citizens on the Kapan-Aghvani route,” he said.  Pashinyan also said, “The Tatev-Aghvani section that was practically impassable for several decades was asphalted and put into operation last week.

Iranian trucks faced a $130 levy imposed by the Azeri authorities, who stopped Iranian trucks using the Goris-Kapan road. This, along with some other disputes, caused tension in ties between Tehran and Baku. With the new road built, Iran no longer needs to use the route on the Azeri soil. Parts of Armenian soil offer Iran access to markets in Georgia, Russia, the Black Sea states, and European countries.

Azerbaijanis turn ancient Armenian site into barbecue restaurant

PanArmenian, Armenia
Nov 12 2021

PanARMENIAN.Net – Azerbaijanis have turned a section of a ruined historic Armenian city dating back to the 1st century BC into a barbecue restaurant, Monuments Watch reports.

In the aftermath of the 44-day war unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) in fall 2020, all the excavations and the entire archaeological site went under Azerbaijan’s control. A video published by a YouTube user on October 31 now shows that Azeris have built a concrete platform in an area known as the Tigranakert Royal Springs park to set up barbecue grills there, one of which was placed right on the edge of an excavated pool.

In the Soviet period, the Azerbaijanis had turned a fortress built in the mid-18th century near the Springs into a restaurant. “Which means the practice of turning a historical and cultural environment into a kebab stall is an old tradition” among the Azeris, the Monuments Watch said.

From 2010 until the 44-day war, the fortress was home to the Tigranakert Archaeological Museum, while the area of the Royal Springs Park served as a platform for cultural events.

Excavations at Tigranakert began in 2005, when it was first discovered, and until 2020 were ongoing under the directorship of Dr. Hamlet L. Petrosyan of the Armenian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography. Archaeologists have uncovered two of the main walls of the city, as well as Hellenistic-style towers and an Armenian basilica church dating to the 5-7th centuries. During the excavations of 2008–2010, silver coins of the Parthian monarchs Mithridates IV (r. 57–54 BC) and Orodes II (r. 57–37 BC) were found.

Yerevan urges Baku to give up hate policies, ease regional tensions

TASS, Russia

Azerbaijan continues to torpedo the implementation of the achieved agreements in various ways, Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan noted

YEREVAN, November 12. /TASS/. Azerbaijan should give up hate polices and take a constructive stance for the sake of easing tensions and putting the region on a peaceful development track, Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan said at an online meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council on Friday.

“Azerbaijan continues to torpedo the implementation of the achieved agreements in various ways. For one, it still keeps in custody many prisoners of war, which is a crude violation of paragraph eight of the November 9, 2020 statement, and of international law. For easing tensions and putting the region on a peaceful development track it is essential for Baku to take a constructive stance and give up hate policies and any hostile actions,” he said.

Grigoryan said Armenia appreciated Russia’s mediatory efforts for ending hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the activity of Russian peacekeepers in the region.

“A year ago, a trilateral statement by the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan was adopted, thanks to Russia’s brokerage, on a ceasefire and the termination of all combat operations in the area of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. We appreciate the efforts exerted by the Russian allies, as well as the activity of the peacekeeping contingent, deployed along the disengagement line and the Lachin corridor,” he said.

Grigoryan recalled that the conflict, which he blamed on Baku, left 40,000 people homeless and destitute, 17,000 civilian facilities ruined and several hundred people dead or injured.

Tensions in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict aggravated on September 27, 2020, when hostilities flared up. On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in the region. Under the agreement, the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces stopped at the positions they were holding at the moment. A number of districts were put under Baku’s control. Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the engagement line and the Lachin corridor.

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan met on November 11 with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay in Paris, the Armenian MFA reports.

FM Mirzoyan congratulated Audrey Azouklay on re-election.

The Armenian FM and the UNESCO Director General praised the productive partnership formed over those years.

Ararat Mirzoyan said that Armenia has always made the maximum efforts to assist UNESCO in the implementation of its key mission in education, science and culture based on common values. In this context he said that Armenia’s membership candidacy for the UNESCO Executive Council for 2021-2025 derives also from the goals of raising the efficiency of those efforts.

The meeting also touched upon the issue of the preservation of the Armenian historical-cultural and religious heritage in the territories of Artsakh which have come under the Azerbaijani control due to last year’s Azerbaijani aggression. Ararat Mirzoyan said that the taking of preventing actions by the international community to prevent Azerbaijan’s deliberate destruction of the Armenian monuments is just an imperative.

In this context he emphasized the importance of implementing the Director General’s proposal to send an independent assessment mission to the region within the frames of the 1954 Hague Convention.

UNESCO General Conference: Armenian FM warns delegates on Azeri blocking of independent mission

 11:37,

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. During the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh and its people last fall, the armed forces of Azerbaijan have been deliberately targeting civilian infrastructures, including schools, kindergartens, as well as Armenian cultural and religious heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh. As a result, more than 22.000 children of Nagorno-Karabakh have been deprived of their right to education, the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan said in remarks at the 41st Session of the UNESCO General Conference.

“I would like, first of all, to congratulate His Excellency Mourao on his election as President of the 41st session of the General Conference and to extend my wishes of success in his mandate.

I would also like to congratulate Madame Azoulay for being re-elected.

We also thank all the Member States for supporting Armenia’s candidature as one of the Vice-Presidents of the General Conference.

The extraordinary challenges that the world faces today from armed conflicts to COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of climate change, emphasize the importance of expanding cooperation in the fields of education, sciences, culture, communication and information. Therefore today, as we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of UNESCO, we reiterate our commitment to the values of UNESCO and support its Strategic Transformation process.

In 2022 Armenia will mark the 30th anniversary of its UNESCO membership, during which Armenia has been and continues to be firmly committed to UNESCO’s mandate to advance universal values and fulfill our common goals, including those defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. That is why we have decided to stand for the Executive Board of UNESCO by submitting our candidacy for the 2021-2025 term.

Armenia is committed to promoting a future of education based on the principle of equal opportunities for all. We think that Global citizenship education is an important tool to respond to global challenges. We also believe that education and awareness-raising are vital for advancing the prevention of hate speech and identity-based discrimination. This is also one of the main ideas behind establishing the UNESCO Chair on Education and Prevention of Genocide and other Atrocity Crimes in 2020 in Yerevan State University.

Armenia strongly supports UNESCO actions for Global Priority Africa and Small Islands Developing States (SIDS). These actions should be further reinforced with special attention to the fields of education and culture.

Armenia supports UNESCO’s efforts to safeguard cultural heritage in conflict zones and condemn the attacks on cultural symbols because of their diverse origin or identity.

Ladies and gentlemen,

During the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh and its people last fall, the armed forces of Azerbaijan have been deliberately targeting civilian infrastructures, including schools, kindergartens, as well as Armenian cultural and religious heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh. As a result, more than 22.000 children of Nagorno-Karabakh have been deprived of their right to education.

Also, it has been almost a year since Armenia alerted the Director-General and the Member States of UNESCO on the severe threats to the Armenian cultural property located in the territories fallen under Azerbaijani control.

We are grateful to Madame Azoulay for her efforts to send an independent technical mission in and around Nagorno-Karabakh in line with the 1954 Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of armed conflict.

Unfortunately, Azerbaijan continues to block the implementation of this mission. This obstructive attitude makes us fear the worst for the state of the Armenian cultural heritage under Azerbaijani controlled territory. Both during the military hostilities and after the establishment of the ceasefire, there have been numerous documented cases of deliberate destruction and acts of vandalism by the Azerbaijani armed forces against the Armenian cultural and religious heritage, and the most notorious example is the double precise drone strikes on the Holy Saviour Ghazanchetsots Cathedral of Shushi on October 8th, last year.

Along with the physical destruction of Nagorno-Karabakh’s religious and cultural heritage, we witness unacceptable cases of distortion of the identity and changing of the architectural appearance of the Armenian cultural and religious heritage in  the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh currently controlled by Azerbaijan with more than 1.500 cultural property and 19.000 museum exhibits.

It is crucial to spearhead international efforts and act appropriately to prevent the Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh to share the tragic fate of 28.000 annihilated properties of the Armenian cultural heritage of Nakhijevan.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to conclude by stressing the importance of promoting a culture of peace, tolerance, mutual respect, and dialogue between cultures as an essential tool for bringing people together and promoting peaceful co-existence. It will enable us to achieve all of the Organization’s priorities,” FM Mirzoyan said in his speech.
