Avetik Ishkhanyan: Reliable reports suggest that a ‘corridor document’ has already been signed

Credible reports suggest that a document on a transport corridor, that would give Azerbaijan access for unimpeded movement to Nakhichevan through Armenia’s Syunik Province, has already been signed, Chairman of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia Avetik Ishkhanyan told a discussion on Saturday.

“We have found ourselves in a critical situation, and if we lose Syunik, we will lose everything else, which is quite likely. There are even reliable reports that a document concerning the corridor has already been signed,” he said.

Ishkhanyan noted that when the “regional power sees one side in the region making concessions, it sides with the other.”

“The war started back in 2018. As I have repeatedly stated, it is when the foundation for a defeat was laid through consistent anti-Russian policy, making our ally an enemy at least in paper and giving Azerbaijan the opportunity to launch an offensive,” Ishkhanyan said.

In his opinion, the resistance movement should have started in Armenia immediately after November 9, 2020, but no one led the people who took to the streets, while each member of a party created later was “concerned only about himself.”

Ishkhanyan called for a strong resistance movement in Armenian “at least now”.

Armenian expert: We must get ready for ‘new inevitable clash’ with enemy

Vardan Voskanyan, an Armenian expert on Iran and head of the Chair of Iranian Studies at the Yerevan State University (YSU), believes Armenia must get ready for a new clash with Azerbaijan, calling it “inevitable”.

“For years, attempts have been made to convince us that peaceful coexistence with the enemy is possible according to a conventionally very simplified formula, “Let’s concede this and peace will come”. In fact, this is a delusion stemming from improper knowledge about the enemy, an illusion of settling down in a comfort zone that does not exist in Advanced Asia, the vanity of which we see almost every single day,” he wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, even after colossal losses, we as a nation and a state do not want to realize that such a comfort zone in the region, where the sacred land of our ancestors is located, has never existed in the long run, does not exist now and will not exist in the foreseeable future.

“Thus, it is necessary to prepare not for some stillborn ‘era of peace’, but for the inevitable next clash with the enemy, and the first step to be ready for it and to succeed is to brace ourselves for the inevitability of such a confrontation, rather than to stick to the unrealistic and destructive approach ‘concessions in exchange for peace’,” Voskanyan stated.

Ararat Mirzoyan: Around 1,500 historical-cultural monuments and 19,000 museum pieces endangered in Artsakh

The historical-cultural monuments of Artsakh are at risk of deliberate destruction by Azerbaijan, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan told an interview with Le Figaro newspaper. Asked about the results of the meeting with Azerbaijani FM Jeyhun Bayramov mediated by the French FM Jean-Yves Le Drian and OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, Mirzoyan first highlighted the need for resumption of the peace process under the Minsk Group Co-Chairs.

“The final settlement of the conflict is definitely on the agenda. At this stage, we agreed to move forward through small steps – first of all the release of all prisoners and ensuring the access of international organisations for humanitarian missions, including UNESCO to Nagorno-Karabakh. That is necessary for controlling the state of the Armenian historical-cultural heritage, as historical-cultural monuments of Artsakh are at risk of deliberate destruction by Azerbaijan,” Mirzoyan said.

As an example Mirzoyan recalled the strike of the Shushi Cathedral during the war by Azeri forces. “Around 1,500  historical-cultural monuments and 19,000 museum pieces endangered,” said Mirzoyan.

YEREVAN. – Past daily of Armenia writes: According to Past newspaper’s information, the opposition is forming a large-scale resistance network throughout the country (…).

In essence, after the rally of the [opposition] “Armenia” Bloc [led by second President Robert Kocharyan] on November 8, there do not seem to be any public protests yet, but, according to the information we have, it is only the public part.

Our sources convey that an operative management headquarters has already been formed, which is having constant meetings with representatives of various political, public circles, organizations. Meetings are organized also with individual figures, including former MPs, intellectuals, specialists in various fields.

According to Past’s information, about 40 regional centers have been established in the territory of Armenia, where they are going to enroll the citizens who want to take part in the resistance.

Newspaper: Armenia soldiers are prohibited from filming episodes from their service, posting them on internet

News.am, Armenia
Nov 20 2021

YEREVAN. – Hraparak daily of Armenia writes: The Azerbaijani side disseminates videos—on various Telegram channels—of the Armenian-Azerbaijani clashes of the recent days, of how the Azerbaijani soldiers take Armenian soldiers captive, beat, debase [them]. And this gives the impression that ours are meager, do not know how to fight, surrender quickly, do not defend themselves and the [military] positions entrusted to them.
Of course, there are such shameful scenes, too, and there is a need to find out why our soldiers have found themselves in such a situation. But ours have fought heroic battles, too—destroying the enemy, which, however, is not video recorded and not disseminated by us.
We were told that the soldiers of the Armenian army are forbidden to film the episodes of their [military] service and disseminate [them] on the internet. It is about the heroic episodes with the participation of our soldiers during military operations.
Meanwhile, the Azerbaijanis are able to film, disseminate what they have done—even what they have not done—, carry out a psychological attack, and they are winning in the information war. [But] ours even passed a law banning journalistic work at the border, not realizing that it means losing in the information war and conceding to the enemy.

33 European Lawmakers Urge Baku to Withdraw Forces from Armenia

EAFJD welcomed the European lawmakers’ initiative

BRUSSELS—At the initiative of European Parliament member Loucas Fourlas, 33 European lawmakers addressed a letter to the EU High Representative Josep Borrell regarding the attack by Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia on November 16.

The lawmakers condemned Azerbaijan’s aggression and demanded that the Azerbaijani armed forces immediately and completely withdraw from the territory of the Republic of Armenia. They also urged the EU External Action Service to put pressure on Azerbaijan to stop and prevent the violation of the territorial integrity of Armenia.

“Unlike the EEAS’s declaration, the letter of the MEP’s clearly calls the aggressor by its name. The EU needs to put pressure on Azerbaijan with concrete measures, in order to ensure the immediate and complete removal of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia,’’ said EAFJD President Kaspar Karampetian, who also welcomed the initiative by the European lawmakers.

On Friday, the President of the European Council Charles Michel announced that at his request, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet in Brussels next month on the margins of the Eastern Partnership summit.

The complete text of the letter is below.

On November 16, the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan launched an attack in along the eastern border of the Republic of Armenia. As Members of the European Parliament, we condemn the Azerbaijani attack and infiltration into the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia which violates the ceasefire statement of the 9. November 2020 and seriously jeopardizes the fragile peace in the region. The Azerbaijani armed forces must immediately and completely withdraw from the territory of the Republic of Armenia.

We deeply regret the reported human losses as a result of the attack. Any action or rhetoric aimed at undermining the security, the peaceful, normal life and the human rights of the population in the eastern and southern regions of the Republic of Armenia must immediately stop.

We call on the EU External Action Service to use all of its leverage to stop and prevent the violation of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia as well as belligerent rhetoric.

Asbarez: Georgia Rejects the Ankara-Baku ‘3+3’ Scheme

Georgia’s Foreign Minister Davit Zalkalani

Georgia has refused to take part in a scheme by Turkey and Azerbaijan to create a regional block involving Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkey and Iran, which has come to be know as the “3+3” platform for the South Caucasus.

“Georgia cannot take part in a geopolitical project with Russia,” said Georgia’s Foreign Minister Davit Zalkalani on Friday when announcing Tbilisi’s decision to not take part in the scheme.

He said he had already expressed his country’s position during conversations with Baku and Ankara.

The proposed scheme envisions the opening of transport routes between the six countries with Turkey and Azerbaijan aiming to create an economic and geopolitical power base in the region.

Moscow has shown a tacit interest in the scheme, possibility with aim of wanting to regain its foothold in Georgia.

Zalkaliani also emphasized that balanced relations with neighboring countries is a foreign policy priority for Georgia and mentioned that Tbilisi had created conditions for the unobstructed transfer of humanitarian cargo in the conflict zone on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

“Due to the escalation in the region, we clearly led a balanced policy on the conflict. There was an immediate response to the transfer of military cargo and transit traffic. In a sense, this contributed to de-escalation. Georgia’s active contacts with the two neighbors were very important,” Zalkaliani added.

The Georgian foreign minister said despite rejecting the “3+3” scheme, Tbilisi was interested in being represented in large geopolitical projects.
