Leaders of the National Salvation Movement held a town hall meeting in Armenia’s third largest city, Vanadzor on Saturday while its supporters staged a car rally in Yerevan on Sunday to amplify their demands for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation for signing the deplorable November 9 agreement that ended the military actions in Karabakh but forced the surrender of territories in Armenia and Artsakh to Azerbaijan.

Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Council of Armenia chairman and the movement’s coordinator Ishkhan Saghatelyan and the group’s candidate for prime minister Vagen Manukyan met with hundreds of supporters in Vanadzor to share their vision for the way out of the impasse created by Pashinyan’s signing of the November 9 agreement.

In his remarks, Saghatelyan outlined the movement’s plans, which includes the establishment of the national accord government, which will be led by Manukyan. He said that the main priorities of the that body will be to unite all Armenians and do away with the enmity and divisions created in society.

He warned that the enemy has already crossed into the territory of Armenia and the country’s national defense is threatened. Saghatelyan added that the national accord government would prioritize the strengthening of the defense apparatus as well as the Armenia’s borders.

Manukyan told supporters gathered in Vanadzor that it was possible to end the war much earlier and prevent further losses of life, adding that the November 9 agreement and the realities of its implementation have proven that “the Armenian side did not negotiate anything.”

Supporters of the National Salvation Movement gathered in Yerevan and took part in a car rally across the city to demand Pashinyan’s resignation.

The cars were adorned by the Armenian tai-color and pictures of Pashinyan with the slogan “traitor” emblazoned on it.

There was heavy police presence at Republic Square, with some law enforcement officials confronting the peaceful protesters. Member of the Homeland Party Davit Baghdasarian was arrested.

YEREVAN, JANUARY 18, ARMENPRESS. Exhibition presenting the manuscript heritage of Artsakh will open in the Matenadaran – the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, next week.

Director of the Matenadaran-Gandzasar scientific-cultural center Aram Torosyan told Armenpress that the manuscripts which were written and kept in Artsakh, the books published in Shushi, archival documents, catholicos writings, etc, will be displayed during the exhibition. There will be a total of 80 exhibits. Torosyan stated that over 100 manuscripts have been displayed in the Artsakh branch of Matenadaran since 2015.

“During the recent war when the whole world witnessed how Azerbaijan was targeting the cultural centers of Artsakh, such as the Ghazanchetsots Church in Shushi, the Matenadaran-Gandzasar cultural center has organized the evacuation of the exhibits from Artsakh. We transferred them to the Matenadaran in Yerevan. But I want to note that their transfer is temporary as we will definitely return them to Artsakh, and the exhibition will again take place in Gandzasar. Meanwhile, the directorate decided to display the treasures of Artsakh in the Matenadaran. The exhibition will open soon and will last until we decide to return it back to Artsakh, probably in the middle of the year. Although it’s not clear yet as there are some technical, security issues which should be clarified before the return. The Matenadaran-Gandzasar center must continue its activity. The building has not been damaged, the staffers are working, the state oversight service is conducting control”, Aram Torosyan said.

 10:36,

YEREVAN, JANUARY 18, ARMENPRESS. Despite the challenges in 2020, Armenia was able to successfully carry out agricultural exports, and even exported 3000 tons more fruits and vegetables than in 2019, according to the Deputy Minister of Economy Arman Khojoyan.

Khojoyan said that over 145,500 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables were exported from Armenia in 2020, the year which saw the COVID-19 pandemic and the second Nagorno Karabakh War. Khojoyan says they had to work very flexibly to maximally speedily assess all problems and swiftly give solutions. He said he is very happy that despite all the difficulties and challenges the exports levels grew.

In 2020, Armenia exported 24,200 tons of grapes (15,900 tons in 2019), 13,800 tons of peaches (9,280 tons in 2019), 28,600 tons of tomatoes (24,800 tons in 2019). However, the exports of apricots and apples dropped. In 2019, Armenia exported 30,000 tons of apricots, but the number was 19,700 in 2020. A 4,000 tons drop in the exports of apples was recorded. “But this low quantity was also due to low harvest,” Khojoyan said, noting frostbite-related harvest problems. “But there isn’t any recorded problem where the goods were produced and we weren’t able to export it.”

Moreover, according to the ministry’s data around 12,000 tons more fruits and vegetables were processed in 2020, totaling 98,000 tons. Grapes aren’t included in this number since an unprecedented large number was recorded. Harvest was on an average 25-30% more than in previous years.

“In 2020 over 48% growth in exports of agricultural products was recorded,” the Deputy Minister said.

Most affected types of exports are wine and brandy. Wine exports dropped 27-28%, while brandy exports decreased 20%.

Khojoyan says the COVID-19 pandemic and other difficulties made them research new potential markets, with countries in the Middle East under the spotlight. He said they are now presenting exporters the results of their studies on the potential of these markets. The ministry is also easing the required paperwork for the businessmen willing to start activities in these directions.

Arno Babajanyan – 100th anniversary of the birth

Arno Babajanyan (1921-1983) is a famous Armenian composer, pianist, People’s Artist of the USSR (1970).

Babajanyan graduated from the Yerevan and the Moscow Conservatories. In 1950-1956 he taught at the Yerevan Conservatory. A celebrated piano virtuoso, Babajanyan was known for performing his own works. A. Khachatryan and S. Rachmaninoff had an influence on formation of Babajanyan’s creative style, which was mostly expressed in his early works: the piano concert (1944) and the violin concert (1949). The works “Vagharshapat Dance”, “Prelude” and “Impromptu” won the first prize at the 1st World Youth and Student Festival in Prague in 1947. The composer’s creative personality was obviously shown in the “Heroic Ballad” (1950) written for the piano and orchestra (USSR State Prize, 1951), then in the piano trio (1952).

Babajanyan composed in different styles – classical, pop, jazz. He was one of the prominent masters of song in the Soviet era. He wrote many lyrical songs, music for dramatic performances (W. Saroyan’s “My heart’s in the highlands”) and movies (“The first love song”, co-author Gh. Saryan, “On the path of thunder”, “The mechanics of happiness”).

As one of much-loved composers of the Soviet people, Babajanyan holds a special place in the history of Armenian and Soviet music thanks to his unique natural talent, deep sensitivity and musical _expression_.

Tatevatsi studied in the theological seminary of the monastery of Tatev, was mentored by a great theologian-philosopher Hovhan Vorotnetsi, after whose death he headed the higher clerical schools of Tatev and Aprakounis and taught theology, philosophy, grammar, music theory and other subjects. He also lectured at the clerical schools of Metsopavank and Saghmosavankchurches. Settled in Tatev in 1390, Tatevatsi brought around him people who came from Syunik and different parts of Armenia to study. He presented his pedagogical views in the work “Constitution of Education”, which was phenomenalto the medieval Armenian pedagogical literature. Under Tatevatsi’s governance the theological seminary of the monastery of Tatev became a university, reaching its peak of prosperity, turning into a center of science, culture, art, and spiritual life.

Tatevatsi wrote valuable theological, denominational and philosophical works. Most important of them are “The Book of Inquiries” and “Voskeporiq” encyclopedic works, which bring together the centuries-old achievements of the Armenian denominational thought, as well as “The Winter Volume” and “The Summer Volume” predicant books.

Tatevatsirewrote and illustrated the Gospels, which are kept in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and Matenadaran named after Mesrop Mashtots.
