Turkish Press: Armenian PM confirms gov’t purchased Russian jets ‘with no missiles’ before Karabakh war

Yeni Şafak, Turkey

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan landed himself in hot water yet again after admitting on Saturday, after months of official denial that his government had purchased Su-30SM fighters jets from Russia “with no missiles.”

“Yes, we bought the fighter, it was delivered in May [2020] and yes, we did not have time to buy the missiles before the war [in Karabakh]. Would you buy planes so that we could buy missiles?” Pashinyan told a gathering residents in the country’s Aragatsotn region.

Back in November, former Chief of Armenia’s army General Staff Movses Hakobyan ceded that the fighter jets came without missiles intended for them, as Russia prohibits the sale of missiles for the Su-30SM to other countries, a claim which the Armenian Defense Ministry had rejected a the time, accusing Hakobyan of divulging state secrets.

During the 44-day conflict in Karabakh, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages, while at least 2,802 of its soldiers were martyred. There are differing claims about the number of casualties on the Armenian side, which, sources and officials say, could be up to 5,000.

The two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement on Nov. 10 to end fighting and work toward a comprehensive resolution.

A joint Turkish-Russian center is being established to monitor the truce, and Russian peacekeeping troops have also been deployed in the region.

The cease-fire is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and a defeat for Armenia, whose armed forces have withdrawn in line with the agreement. Violations, however, have been reported in the past few weeks, with some Armenian soldiers said to have been hiding in the mountainous enclave.

Greek was confirmed on February 16 as a taught language in the Military Institution of Vazgen Sargsyan in the Armenian capital of Yerevan.

The head of the military institute, Professor Khachatur Khachatryan, met with the Military Attaché of the Greek Embassy in Armenia, Colonel Gerasimo Avloniti.

During the meeting, the military cooperation between the two countries was discussed, along with the language courses.

The Hellenic Military Academy, known as the Evelpidon military institutions, and the Military Institution of Vazgen Sargsyan have been collaborating for a long time now and the relations have are healthy.

What does this mean?

Greece has always encouraged Armenians from abroad, especially within Greece and from Cyprus, to study and gain military education and experience at Evelpidon.

Offering Greek language courses not only helps Armenians to learn Greek and continue their military education at Evelpidon, but also to potentially send Greeks to study in Armenia.

Evelpidon.

Furthermore, Armenians who study at the Evelpidon have the upper hand in learning Greece’s military sector close-up.

Greece, if not the best in the world, has at least a top 5 Air Force.

For the past year, they have been heavily investing in military jets while collaborating with strong Middle Eastern countries like Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

They have been for many years one of the most dominant players in the air field.

Our relations have always been underrated.

It is time to push for more collaborations, projects and crucial work to be done.

It is not just about being brothers historically and culturally, let’s start to encourage and help each other grow.

It is recalled that last month the Greek Defence Minister met with the Armenian Ambassador to discuss bilateral defence cooperation.

Concordia student groups cancel ‘A unique Perspective on Nagorno-Karabakh’ online event

Ethical concerns were raised about presenting one-sided approach to a complex conflict

A virtual conference about the 44-day conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia which was supposed to be held Friday evening, got cancelled on the same day after student groups voiced concerns about the integrity of the event.

The event was organized by the International Relations Society and the Strategic and Diplomatic Society, which fall under the umbrella of the Political Science Students Association at Concordia. They planned to receive Kerim Uras, Turkish ambassador to Canada, as guest speaker to speak on the conflict, without also inviting the Armenian ambassador, Anahit Harutyunyan, or anyone else presenting the stance of the aggressed.

“We would be completely fine to have both ambassadors discuss professionally on academic grounds together during the event,” said Hrag Koubelian, president of the Concordia Armenian Students’ Union.

CASU expressed to the IRS and the SDS that the event would be unethical and racist because it would give an unopposed platform to Uras, who represents a country that, to this day, denies a genocide they’ve committed. It would’ve given an academic platform to propagate the Turkish narrative about a conflict in which they were allies of the aggressor.

“During the entirety of the Nagorno-Karabakh war, systemic ethnic cleansing of Armenians was at the forefront of the Turkish and Azerbaijani governments’ objectives yet again,” CASU wrote in a press release calling for the cancellation of the event. “The [Armenian Student Associations] acknowledge the efforts made by the aforementioned organizations to rectify the errors of inviting a Turkish official to spread misinformation and propaganda on the subject, in addition to the clear armenophobia that is codified in Turkish policy.”

Not long after the war began between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Turkey expressed its support of Azerbaijan in the war. They endorsed the war and provided military support to aid Azerbaijan in carrying out another territorial expansion with the intent of pushing ethnic Armenians off the indigenous lands they have inhabited for centuries. This includes the destruction of heritage sites that trace back to the roots of Armenian culture. This cultural erasure was documented throughout the war and is still ongoing, despite the Russia-brokered ceasefire.

Circling back to the event, ASAs explained that a one-sided argument from the perspective of the perpetrator had no place at an institution like Concordia on such a complex matter that would require extensive and accurate context from both sides.

“It’s wrong because, let’s say if they would have brought the ambassador of Russia that would have made more sense, but in this case, Turkey is clearly an ally with Azerbaijan and providing false information to students at Concordia regarding a war that happened between Azerbaijan and Armenia, this was something [that is] wrong,” said Koubelian.

Aside from publicly supporting past and present political leaders with genocidal ideologies, Uras has attempted to reverse facts about the war to pin many of Turkey’s and Azerbaijan’s wrongdoings and violations on Armenia. For example, when asked about hiring foreign mercenaries in an interview with the CBC at the time of the war in October, Uras denied those claims and stated the contrary were true—that mercenaries were fighting alongside the Armenian forces. Since the interview, testimonies and recordings from Turkey-backed Syrian mercenaries have surfaced, proving they were deployed to fight alongside Azeri forces which was confirmed by the UN, yet no proof of the contrary has been found.

In the same interview, he also labeled Armenia as the aggressor and stated Armenia launched the attack against Azerbaijan. However, many sources confirmed that the opposite was true—Azerbaijan launched the attack on September 27. Evidence surfaced proving the attack was premeditated as the mercenaries signed up at least one week before the first clashes.

Those in favour of the event responded that cancelling the event infringed on their freedom of speech. Uras tweeted the same day, “A sad day for freedom of speech and Charter rights in Canada,” and praised Kamal Ataturk in the the same thread—the orchestrator of the 1915 Armenian genocide, echoing and perpetuating the rhetoric of Turkish governement. Turkey, however, ranks 154th out of 180 countries on the World Press Freedom Index and leads the world in the number of jailed journalists.

In a joint statement explaining the event’s cancelation, the IRS and SDS wrote, “the academic event-planning approach from our behalf was suboptimal for providing an admissible and appropriate comprehension of the conflict.”

Although the IRS and SDS clarified in the statement that the opinions of the speakers at their events are not necessarily representative of their own opinions, they still maintain a responsibility to adhere to the values and academic code of the university and to uphold academic integrity. Giving an unopposed platform voicing the perspective of a genocide perpetrator fails to align with those values. The IRS and SDS declined to comment further.

“This was the right move,” said Koubelian of the student groups’ decision to cancel the event. “Moving forward, we’d like to see what Concordia would do with further events.”

Armenia PM on his statement about Karabakh’s Shushi

News.am, Armenia

I was careless when I made a statement about Shushi that I wasn’t supposed to make. This is what Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said during his visit to Aragatsotn Province yesterday, touching upon the sensational statement that he had made about Shushi in the National Assembly a few months ago.

“Today the people who criticized me for my statement have become the biggest so-called defenders of Shushi. Who visited Shushi in 2020? What have we Armenians done in Shushi over the past 30 years? Yes, I made the wrong statement in terms of the way I made the statement, but I didn’t say anything wrong in terms of content because, for those people, Baden-Baden was a nice city to visit, not Shushi in Nagorno-Karabakh. They built places like Shushi in all places around the world, but as far as possible from Shushi,” he said.

When a citizen told him that Ruben Hayrapetyan has built a house in Shushi, Pashinyan said the following in response: “Yes, sure, an oligarch was tricked and taken there and forced to build a house, or he wasn’t tricked, I don’t know. This is the reality.”

During a question-and-answer session with government officials in the National Assembly on January 20, Pashinyan declared the following: “I would like to call your attention to the fact that, before the signing, 90 and more percent of the population of Shushi was Azerbaijani. So, you want to say that the city of Shushi with a population of 90 and more percent Azerbaijanis was an Armenian city with that status?”

Advocate Amram Makinyan posted on his Facebook page a photo showing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wearing body armor during a visit to Aragatsotn Province.

“The person who isn’t afraid of being executed is wearing body armor,” the advocate wrote.

Let us remind that in all villages, Pashinyan declared that if the people decide that he is guilty, he is ready to be executed and ‘humbly’ fulfill the people’s decision.
