In our series of letters from African journalists, Ismail Einashe takes a trip to Ethiopia to find out about a lost community.
My search for the last Armenians of Ethiopia began in Piassa, the bustling commercial centre of the old part of the capital, Addis Ababa.
On previous visits to the city, I had always been intrigued by the snippets I had heard about the community and its history.
There had long been a connection between Ethiopia and Armenia through the Orthodox Church. But this developed beyond priests, to bring in diplomats and traders.
In the 19th Century, a handful of Armenians played a vital role in the court of Emperor Menelik II.
And later, in the early 20th Century, a community settled that went on to have an economic and cultural impact in the country.

On a sticky afternoon, I stood outside the gates of the exquisite St George Armenian Apostolic Holy Church that was built in the 1930s.
It looked closed but I called out “selam” – “hello” in Amharic.
A confused-looking elderly security guard came out and after I explained that I wanted to look around, he went to fetch Simon, the Armenian-Ethiopian caretaker.
The quiet, dignified man came out and told me that they do not get many visitors.
The church is rarely open, as there is no priest these days, and the community, of no more than 100, is mostly elderly.
Inside the church, the altar is ornately decorated and red Persian rugs cover the floor.
This was the heart of the community that began to grow in numbers during the rule of Haile Selassie who, as Ras Tafari, became prince regent of Ethiopia in 1916 and Emperor from 1930 to 1974.
Under his leadership, Ethiopia began to rapidly modernise and Armenian courtiers, businessmen and traders played an important role in this transition.
In 1924, Ras Tafari visited the Armenian monastery in Jerusalem, where he met a group of 40 children who had been orphaned by the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War One.
Moved by their plight, he asked the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem if he could take them to Ethiopia and look after them there.
The 40 orphans, or arba lijoch in Amharic, were all trained in music and went on to form the imperial brass band of Ethiopia.
Despite their small numbers the Armenian community had a crucial role in ushering Ethiopia into the modern world”Ismail Einashe

They were led by an Armenian, Kevork Nalbandian, who composed the imperial anthem.
The community reached its zenith in the 1960s when it numbered 1,200.
Despite their small numbers they had a crucial role in ushering Ethiopia into the modern world – from helping to develop the distinctive Ethiopian jazz style to working as tailors, doctors, business people and serving in the imperial court.
But as the Armenian community was tied to the imperial history of the country, once the emperor fell the community declined.
Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974 by the Marxist Derg junta, which went on to seize businesses and property, including that of the Armenians.
Their numbers tumbled as many fled to North America and Europe.
But a few stayed and some married within the local community, creating a unique blend of Armenian and Ethiopian cultures.
They can still be seen in the church for special religious celebrations.

But there is also the Armenian social club, which has a restaurant that reminds people of the taste of home.
Simon, the church caretaker, told me that I should go.
It was a Tuesday night and, apart from my friend and myself, there was a group of three Armenian-Ethiopian women who were delighted to see strangers in the restaurant.
They admitted that the community was not what it used to be. But the social club remained as a way to keep it alive.
That night, as I tucked into delicious and sumptuous börek and lyulya kebabs, I felt I was tasting the history of the Armenians in Ethiopia.

Ministry of Healthcare and Center for AIDS Prevention again fail to agree on merger with Nork Hospital
ArmInfo. On March 2, the NA Standing Committee on Health Care and Social Affairs of the Republic of Armenia held discussions on the merger of the “Republican Center for AIDS Prevention” and the “NORK Infection Clinical Hospital”.
To recall, the corresponding government decision was made on January 30.
Meanwhile, the Center is categorically against the merger, noting that this decision poses a threat to national security, nullifying the many years of efforts to combat HIV / AIDS.
As noted in her speech General Secretary of the RA Ministry of Healthcare Lusine Kocharyan, as a result of the planned merger, HIV patients will only benefit. She drew attention to the fact that their inpatient treatment of opportunistic infections was always carried out in Mink.
In addition, the hospital plans to improve laboratory resources, and earlier design and calculation work was carried out in order to repair and re-equip this medical facility. Kocharyan also noted that the Center is equipped with modern laboratory equipment, which after the merger will be able to access patients with diseases such as, for example, hepatitis C.
At the same time, she assured that the merger of the Center and the hospital would not affect the property and employees of these institutions. According to her, it is about introducing a centralized management system, and it will take approximately 5 months to complete the merger process itself. Kocharyan noted that the corresponding draft decision on the merger of the Center and the hospital was positively evaluated by all donor organizations. Meanwhile, as was noted, the Center takes a categorical position on this issue, and does not comply with the written instructions of the ministry.
Kocharyan also dispelled fears of patients with HIV-positive status, noting that they would not receive appropriate treatment at local clinics after the merger. As Anahit Harutyunyan, head of the “Positive People Armenian Network” NGO, noted earlier, this prospect was worried about this prospect because of fears of a lack of tolerance towards them and their relatives in primary care facilities. Meanwhile, as it turned out, a number of Center employees in protest against the merger with Mink wrote letters of resignation. As the former head of the epidemiological surveillance department of the Center Arshak Papoyan stated, there are a number of obvious inaccuracies in substantiating the government decision. So, he drew attention to the fact that every year in the Center about 700-800 people receive preventive treatment to prevent the development of opportunistic infections. As regards the fact that HIV / AIDS patients seek treatment at Nork, in fact, as Papoyan noted, in addition to Nork, the treatment is provided, in particular, by the Hematology Center and the National Oncology Center. Meanwhile, this circumstance did not lead to their merger with the AIDS Prevention Center.
The expert also drew attention to the fact that 400-500 new cases of HIV are detected annually in Armenia, and therefore it would be more advisable not to weaken the Center through a merger, but rather to increase its capacity. Arshak Asmaryan, the former head of the Center’s medical care and services department, has a similar opinion, noting that to strengthen preventive measures it would be enough to go not by merging, but to introduce an HIV test in all medical institutions as a routine laboratory test method. To recall, earlier Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan commented on the decision to merge the Center and the Nork hospital, promising that this decision would not entail a staff reduction. According to him, scientific achievements and modern international approaches in the fight against AIDS indicate that this issue should be integrated into the national health system. As was noted, the need for separate institutions dealing with the problem of AIDS existed about 40 years ago, when the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was only detected.

Azerbaijani press: OSCE MG should produce more for resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Turkish FM
BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 2
Trend:
OSCE Minsk Group should produce more in terms of a settlement for the resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh issue, Turkish Foreign Minister Movlut Cavusoglu tweeted, Trend reports.
“This solution should be in full respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan,” the minister wrote.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
