Azerbaijan intentionally escalates the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border: Armenia’s MFA

Aysor, Armenia

Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement over the incident on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, stressing that during the recent days it is already another attempt of the Azerbaijani side to escalate the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

“On March 10, as a result of ceasefire violation by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan in the Nakhijevan section of the state borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan Zohrab Sianosyan, servicemen of the Armenian Armed Forces, was shot dead by a sniper fire. We express our deep condolences and sympathy to the family and the relatives of the  private.  This is yet another attempt of Azerbaijan to intentionally escalate the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border: on March 6 Azerbaijani armed forces attempted an infiltration in Tavush region of Armenia.

Regular attempts by Azerbaijan to escalate the situation on the state border with Armenia, to expand the geography of escalation and refrain from applying the existing mechanisms of de-escalation attest to the deliberate nature of Azerbaijan’s attempts to undermine regional security and peace.

“Such actions of Azerbaijan demonstrate that the establishment of international risk reduction mechanisms is an important priority of the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, and the implementation of agreements reached in that regard is a necessary condition for the advancement of the peace process,” the statement said.

During the YES campaign—in the forthcoming referendum on constitutional amendments—in Sisian town, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan referred to the remark that if there were so many positive changes in the country, why people do not feel it first-hand.

“First, people feel it; but I want us to compare this situation with the situation of a person with a headache,” he said. “Now Armenia is in the situation that we have drunk the headache drug, but that pain is in the process of going away. Do not doubt that the pain will go away.”

“It was convenient for the former political system that the citizen be meager, because the more meager, the better,” he added. “Because if a person is not surprised to see 5,000 or 10,000 drams, he will not vote with election bribe.”

Alexei Miller: DataArt Armenia is part of our common success

iTel.am, Armenia

Alexei Miller, managing director of financial, healthcare, tourism, media and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions provider DataArt, paid a visit to the company’s Yerevan office in the framework of his trip to Armenia on March 9.

He has told Itel.am about the company and his impressions from the trip.

***
I co-founded DataArt, a company whose story began 22 years ago. I live and work in New York, and this is my second visit to Yerevan.

Armenia is a place where some of the most sophisticated technology can be created, and later it can be used everywhere, so I always knew Armenia had this reputation. I have an Armenian friend, who started a company around 10 years ago, and it’s an exceptionally successful firm now.

It is called OneMarketData, it operates globally. All of their technologies are done in Armenia and everybody knows them.

***
DataArt operates offices in nearly two dozen different places. It’s very important for the company to operate as one. In every location, where we work, we operate as one large team.

DataArt is a company where we are building success all together. Yerevan has been part of that common success. It’s all about people. We were lucky we met some really good people. I don’t know whether we would be in Armenia if we wouldn’t meet them.

***
I think it’s very important to understand our place in the business – what we do is help our clients move to the future of technology. We are selling a journey from where the client is today to where they will be in the future. It requires flexibility, there are new challenges every day, and it requires curiosity. The world is very flat and opportunities are everywhere.

Pashinyan: Amulsar field will not be developed if there are uncontrolled environmental risks

Arminfo, Armenia

ArmInfo. On March 11, as part of the “YES” campaign for the constitutional referendum scheduled for April 5, RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with Jermuk residents who had blocked the road to the Amulsar field.

Local residents presented to the prime minister their concerns  regarding the exploitation of the field. In particular, they noted  public health risks due to the proximity of the mine to Jermuk.  Environmental risks are also a concern, especially given the fact  that Jermuk is considered a resort area. As noted, during the  operation of the mine, the city will become unattractive to tourists,  which carries serious economic risks.  Activists assured the prime  minister that they will defend their position to the last, and will  not unblock the road, even if the government decides to give the  green light to this project. In particular, they expressed their  concerns about information on the presence of uranium in Amulsar.

Meanwhile, Pashinyan emphasized that he no less than local residents  wants to have complete information about the possible risks of  operating the field. He also assured that he was ready to delve into  the study of this issue as much as possible. According to him, if the  project carries uncontrollable environmental risks, then it will not  be implemented. The operation of the mine, as was noted, is possible  only under conditions of controlled environmental factors.

To recall, earlier this week, Minister of Nature Protection of the  Republic of Armenia Erik Grigoryan stated that the results of the  1952-1954 expedition were not taken into account when developing the  Amulsar field. According to him, in the framework of the criminal  case, the investigation will reveal whether this fact is an attempt  to conceal the results of those studies, or is this an omission on  the part of the state body.  As the Minister noted, significant  deviations were made in the implementation of the program. And if the  company has the opportunity to change them, it must do so.

Earlier, the minister noted that if the company “Lydian Armenia”,  developing the deposit, concealed or falsified data on uranium  reserves at “Amulsar”, then this will lead to serious consequences  for it. On September 5 of last year, the department addressed a  letter to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol  Pashinyan, which noted the results of the Gromov expedition conducted  in 1952-1954. The package, which concerns the presence of uranium,  was sent to the Investigative Committee, and if it turns out that the  research procedures by Lydian were violated, the company will face  serious problems.

It should be noted that despite the assurances of the Lydian company  that about $ 400 million has already been invested in the development  project of the Amulsar gold deposit, local ecologists do not share  the government’s enthusiasm about the attractiveness of the mine’s  operation plan. Environmentalists fear that the exploitation of the  field, during which sodium cyanide will be used, may lead to the  oxidation of water in rivers. Contaminated waters will become  unsuitable for drinking and irrigation and may cause irreparable harm  to the mineral springs of Jermuk and the ecosystem of Sevan. In  addition to the water basin, the public is also concerned about the  possible presence of uranium reserves in the deposit.

In his work “Uranium-bearing geological formations in Armenia>, the  famous scientist, Doctor of Geological Sciences Petros Gevorkovich  Aloyan, referring to the data of the Gromov expedition, noted that  the Amulsar occurrence of uranium is located 4 km southeast of the  village of Ketchut and 5 km to northwest of the top of the mountain  of the same name. Approximately 76 tons of uranium were calculated  for five sections of the Amulsar, and taking into account uranium in  the thorium section, its total reserves can be estimated at 100 tons.   Moreover, according to the research of another scientist, Professor  G.S.  Avagyan, according to 40 samples of Amulsar ore, there are 195  tons of uranium and thorium there.  Meanwhile, the development of  uranium deposits requires a special government permit, which Lydian  does not have. According to the company, the deposit contains about  73733 kg of gold with an average grade of 0.78 g per ton, as well as  294.367 tons of silver with an average grade of 9.29 g per ton. At  the same time, there is not a word about uranium.

The Court of Appeals to change the pre-trial detention for the owner of the Fifth Channel

Panorama, Armenia

The Court of Appeals has approved on Wednesday the appeal of attorneys against the decision of the first instance court to remand the owner of the Fifth Channel Armen Tavadyan in custody. The decision was made by presiding judge Alexander Azaryan. It is expected that Tavadyan will be released from custody in the coming hours.

To remind, Armenia’s Special Investigation Service (SIS) arrested Tavadyan in December on suspicion of seeking false testimony in favour of Armenia’s jailed former President Robert Kocharyan. At the motion filed by the prosecutors, the Court chose arrest as detention measure for him. Later number of media organisations and the journalists of the Fifth Channel issued a statement, insisting the criminal prosecution against the owner of opposition TV channel resembled an act of political vendetta against the businessman for his personal relationships.

The statement said that the arrest of the owner of a TV company was a ‘disgraceful example of phycological and financial pressure exerted on the Fifth Channel.”

‘All her relatives rejected her, so we will bury the murdered woman’: Mayor of Gyumri

Aravot, Armenia

The mayor of Gyumri, Samvel Balasanyan, spoke to Aravot Daily in an interview about the 43-year-old woman who was killed by her 28-year-old boyfriend, as well as the beating of her 12-year-old daughter by the boyfriend. “It seems that violence is associated with Gyumri. This is just one example- a woman was killed and her daughter is fighting for her life. Another case was the Avetisyan family, then our janitor’s murder… This all has an effect on the lives of our citizens. I am pleased with the fact that women gathered and organized a protest against violence in Gyumri. We have traditions, we are a traditional people, and we have been on a long road. This all needs to be taken into consideration. Families are sacred and we need to uphold our historical traditions. I consider families to be sacred and my own family plays the most important role in my life. Everyone needs to understand that, and that violence cannot be tolerated within families. The fact remains that there is violence all over Armenia, not just in Gyumri, which is condemnable. I condemned violence when I was a deputy in parliament. I suggested that we create a law against violence. It is good that a law was passed upon the first reading today about violence.”

Aravot Daily asked the mayor about who will take care of the 12-year-old girl, who is currently at the St. Astvatsamayr Medical Center in Gyumri. None of her relatives went to see her.

Samvel Balasanyan said that the Gyumri Guardianship Board of Trustees held their first session. “We held the first session and I was informed that, since the girl does not have either her mother or her father, she is an orphan and she needs a guardian, despite the fact that her older brother will turn 18 in September. At the moment, there are people who wish to become her guardian, but we will see how the process plays out. The first step on behalf of the municipality was taken through calling the commission. The girl was recognized as someone who needs guardianship. They told me that there are people who called and expressed the desire to become guardians, but now we are preparing to bury her mother because all of her relatives refused to do it. We have a service that does this, so we will organize the woman’s funeral. Now, we are talking to her relatives about which cemetery she should be buried in. We have a place, so we will bury her there,” Samvel Balasanyan said.
