Fresno State Publishes English Translation of ‘Armenian-American Sketches’

The English translation of Bedros Keljik’s “Armenian-American Sketches”

FRESNO—Professor Barlow Der Mugrdechian, Berberian Coordinator of the Armenian Studies Program at California State University, Fresno, announced that the English translation of Bedros Keljik’s “Armenian-American Sketches” has been published by the Armenian Series of The Press at Fresno State.

“Keljik’s stories offer us a glimpse into the soul of the Armenian people, whether in their historic homeland or finding their way in America,” noted Eastern Primate Bishop Daniel Findikyan.

Co-editor Lou Ann Matossian familiarizes the reader to Keljik in her introduction. She discusses how author, activist, and entrepreneur Bedros Arakel Keljik (1874–1959) belongs to the founding generation of Armenian-American authors, yet his “sketches” of early immigrant life are only now emerging. Keljik was a maternal uncle of Vahan Totovents, author of “Life on the Old Roman Road” and other works. He was also the elder brother of novelist and poet Krikor Keljik, also known as “K. Devrish.”

A foreword by co-editor Christopher Atamian discusses the genesis of the book and the significance of its publication. He places Keljik’s works in the early history of Armenian-American literature. Atamian also notes the role of translator Aris Sevag, whose meticulous work has brought Keljik’s work to life.

“Armenian-American Sketches” includes 29 short stories written originally in Armenian by Bedros Keljik. Twenty of the short stories were translated by Aris Sevag, one by Lou Ann Matossian, and eight of the stories originally published in “Hairenik” were translated by Vartan Matiossian.

The volume also includes an enlightening biography of Keljik, “An Armenian Odyssey: From the Euphrates to the Mississippi,” written by his grandchildren, Mark and Thomas Keljik. Roupen Zartarian’s “How Death Came to the Earth,” translated by Bedros Keljik, is also part of the volume.

Edited by Christopher Atamian, Lou Ann Matossian, and Barlow Der Mugrdechian, “Armenian-American Sketches” provides a wealth of interesting stories about the early Armenian community in America.

Armenians began arriving to America in large numbers at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. They established themselves in communities throughout the United States, maintaining their Armenian culture, while also becoming acclimated to life in America. In “Armenian-American Sketches,” author Keljik brings to life this period in Armenian-American history. With keen observation, Keljik provides the reader with an often-humorous insight into that life, with all of its sadness and joy, with the sense of community, and with the hard work and challenges faced by the immigrants. This is a book that will appeal to any reader who seeks to understand the immigrant experience in the United States.

The English translation of “Armenian-American Sketches” is available through Amazon.

GCC Moves Courses to Virtual Learning Due to Coronavirus

GCC logo

GLENDALE—At Glendale Community College, the highest priority is the health and safety of the students and dedicated staff balanced with fulfillment of their education mission. Throughout the spread of the coronavirus, they have been in close communication with the County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Health, the California Community College Chancellor’s Office, other local and state government agencies, and internal stakeholders to address the evolving situation. According to the most recent information from the CDC, for most people, the immediate risk of being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to be low. As of today, GCC has no confirmed evidence or notice from the California Department of Public Health about any coronavirus cases or exposure risks related to the college.

In order to contribute to the local, state, and national efforts to reduce transmission of the coronavirus, Glendale Community College is implementing a purposeful and strategic move to a virtual learning and service environment with an emphasis on supporting student needs. Therefore, GCC will move as many credit and noncredit classes taught at the Verdugo and Garfield Campuses as possible into virtual and alternate modalities – remote instruction – that do not require in-classroom activity. This action will begin on Wednesday, March 18 and extend until further notice. These courses will be offered at the same days and times as now scheduled. To prepare for this change, all classes will be closed Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17. On Wednesday, March 18, classes will resume in the appropriate modality.

There will be some limited exceptions for courses that may not best be taught in an online environment, such as hands-on labs, performance classes, physical education/kinesiology, and some non-credit classes. Links to a list of these courses will be posted online. Instructors will communicate directly with students as to the environment in which classes will meet but will do everything possible to limit in-classroom requirements.

Classes will be taught in the online platform Canvas, using tools such as Canvas Conferences and Chat. Professional development support is being provided to faculty. Students and faculty with specific questions may address them via [email protected] or call Canvas 24/7 at Faculty line: 833.544.3019 or Student line: 844.600.4951. Students can find information on Canvas basics online.

Students who do not have access to computers, mobile phones, and Wi-Fi to accommodate the alternate means of instruction may checkout computers in the Verdugo Campus Library. Computers also will be available for use in the Verdugo Campus Library and in the Garfield Campus Computer Lab.

It is recognized that there are DSPS students who may need additional support to achieve a successful learning experience with the non-classroom environment. These students should contact the Center for Students with Disabilities at 818.240.1000 Ext. 5905 to speak with a counselor.

Academic counseling is available online for students who would like to speak with a counselor, but do not wish to come to the college for an in-person meeting. Online counseling appointments and online drop-in counseling services can be accessed through the Academic Counseling office web page.

The Verdugo and Garfield Campuses will continue to remain open and operational and all college employees will be available to support present and prospective students’ needs as we continue to assess the evolving circumstances.

All public events and other activities scheduled at the Verdugo and Garfield Campuses will continue unless they are estimated to attract more than 100 people. At this time, all college athletic, drama, music, and dance events scheduled will be held until further notice.

All non-essential college-related travel for college employees and student trips is prohibited until further notice.

College personnel will continue efforts to ensure a clean and healthy environment at the campuses through increased precautionary steps to sterilize actively used surfaces throughout the facilities. The facilities department is working to service soap dispensers in all bathrooms, clean door knobs, and other actively used surfaces with disinfectant wipes for every classroom and public area, cleaning keyboards, and actively used surfaces in computer labs.

We recognize that these are extreme measures that will not satisfy everyone. Please know that these decisions have been made with the best of intentions and a focus on health and safety. As we move forward, be prepared for more announcements as information is changing at a rapid pace. Let us stay focused on maintaining a healthy environment for all and continue to work together to strategically address other issues of operation and implementation not related directly to the health issues.

Media: India called Armenia "Silicon Valley of the CIS" and explained the sale of SWATHI radars

Arminfo, Armenia

ArmInfo. The Internet portal “Military Review” published a columnist material from India, where Armenia is called the “Silicon Valley of the CIS.”

“The Indian media published material on deepening cooperation between  India and Armenia. The author of the material is observer Aditi  Bhaduri. The author notes that many people in India do not even know  where Armenia is, but in Armenia they are well aware of India and are  ready to follow the path of cooperation In the article: “Caucasian  contacts: why rapprochement with Armenia is very important for  India,” the author very unexpectedly calls Armenia “Silicon Valley of  the CIS,” the Internet portal writes.

“Armenia is considered the Silicon Valley of the CIS, is a member of  the Eurasian Economic Union, and also has a partnership agreement  with the European Union. Being on the threshold of Europe, in the  heart of the Caucasus and having a border with Iran, the geopolitical  position of Armenia is of great importance.  Deepening ties with this  country , India will get everything that it can get, and will lose  nothing.

The author recalls a recent contract worth about $ 40 million for the  supply of SWATHI radars from the Indian Defense Research and  Development Organization (DRDO) for the needs of the Armenian armed  forces and explains the feasibility of the transaction.

This opens up new prospects for cooperation for both countries, and  defense cooperation is always long- term. Such supplies help  countries such as Armenia, as they are cheaper than European  counterparts. They also open up new markets for India and give a big  boost to domestic defense production, “the source said.  Indian media  particularly emphasize that Yerevan supports New Delhi’s position on  Kashmir. At the same time, Aditi Bhaduri said that India did not  expect such support from Turkey. Against such a background, the  author recalls that during the First World War, the Armenians were  subjected to genocide by the Ottoman Empire, which Ankara does not  recognize nowadays.

Tonoyan at the meeting with Kasprzyk pointed out the importance of implementing measures to stabilize the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone

Arminfo, Armenia

ArmInfo. The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and on the contact line of the  Artsakh Defense Army and the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, the  frequency and nature of the ceasefire violation was presented by the  Minister of Defense of Armenia David Tonoyan at a meeting with the  Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andrzej  Kasprzyk.

As reported by ArmInfo in the press service of the RA Ministry of  Defense, Tonoyan expressed concern over recent attempts by the enemy  to intensify actions in some parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani state  border.

At the same time, the head of the Armenian defense department  emphasized that the military and political developments in the  region, the economic and epidemiological situation in the world, as  well as other factors increase the likelihood of destabilization.  From this point of view, he noted the importance of the speedy  implementation of measures to ease tensions in order to eliminate new  provocations.  In turn, Kasprzyk expressed the willingness of the  mission to make every effort to ease the tension.  The interlocutors  also discussed humanitarian issues related to those held in captivity  and imprisonment.

Yerevan accuses Azerbaijani President of irresponsible behavior

Arminfo, Armenia

ArmInfo. In Yerevan, they reacted to the statements of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the first meeting of the new convocation of the Milli Majlis.   Thus, the press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, Anna  Naghdalyan, responding to Aliyev’s remarks regarding Armenia, in  particular, noted:

“The President of Azerbaijan made an extensive  speech at the first meeting of the new parliament, which clearly  expressed hatred of Armenia and the Armenian people. Azerbaijani  authorities are trying hide the low level of legitimacy of the recent  parliamentary elections, the inability to carry out political and  democratic reforms behind aggressive, baseless and fictitious  statements, which apart from Armenia and Armenia and retirement homes  of the people, are also sent to European countries, European  institutions, international observation missions, monitoring  elections in Azerbaijan “.

At the same time, Naghdalyan expressed particular concern about the  fact that the Azerbaijani authorities are trying to play the  religious card in their baseless accusations, on the one hand  accusing European countries of violating the rights of migrants on  religious grounds, and on the other – voicing calls for religious  solidarity in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict .

“The propaganda of a hostile attitude towards the Armenian people by  the President of Azerbaijan, accompanied by new historical and  geographical” discoveries, “fundamentally contradicts Azerbaijan’s  commitments in recent years to create favorable conditions and  prepare peoples for peace.  From this point of view, it must be noted  that the low level of democracy and the protection of human rights  seriously hinder the advancement of the peace process on the  Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, in particular, the implementation of the  agreements reached within the framework of this process.  The  attempts of the top leadership of Azerbaijan to legitimize themselves  by spreading hatred towards the people of the neighboring state and  distrust of the international community are irresponsible and can  jeopardize peace and security in the region, “the Armenian Foreign  Ministry spokeswoman summed up.  Recall that Aliyev during his speech  to the new parliament, referring to the Karabakh conflict, pointed  out the importance of intensifying efforts in all organizations and  conducting offensive diplomacy. “In connection with international  activities, I want to say that our deputies are represented in  several international organizations. Of course, activity there was  quite high in previous years. And now it should be even higher,  because we must bring the realities of Azerbaijan. Especially we must  bring the historical the realities connected with the  Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Armenian side cannot put forward a  single serious argument against our arguments, because the truth is  on our side. After I said in Munich about Kurekchaysko I’m aware of a  peace treaty in Armenia, I know that this treaty is being crammed in.  It is clearly indicated who, when concluded this treaty. And there is  no talk of the Armenian people there. On the one hand, Russian  General Tsitsianov, and on the other, Ibrahim Khan, moreover, Ibrahim  Khan is written in Russian. Here’s the real  story, “Aliyev assured, while once again deciding to attribute all  the historical territories of Armenia to Azerbaijan, which was  created as a state in the early 20th century.

U.S. Department of State releases report on human rights practices in Armenia

Panorama, Armenia

The U.S. Department of State has released its annual report on human rights practices in Armenia in 2019, Voice of America’s Armenian service reports.

There are political prisoners or detainees in Armenia, according to the report. Significant human rights issues in the country included: torture; arbitrary detention, although with fewer reports; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions; arbitrary interference with privacy; significant problems with the independence of the judiciary; crimes involving violence or threats of violence targeting LGBTI persons; and use of forced or compulsory child labor.

The government took steps to investigate and punish alleged abuses by former and current government officials and law enforcement authorities, the report says.

Armenia has a “legacy” of systemic corruption in many areas, the Department of State says. “In 2018 the government made combatting corruption one of its top priorities and continued to take measures to eliminate it during the year. Although top officials announced the “eradication of corruption” in the country, local observers noted that anticorruption measures needed further institutionalization,” the report reads.

The State Department expresses concerns over the issues concerning an independent judiciary and corruption practices in the field. The judicial system lacks independence and impartiality and does not enjoy public trust. The report refers to the concerns of local NGOs over the lack of objective criteria for the control of judges, especially regarding the Supreme Judicial Council and the Constitutional Court.

According to the report, authorities generally complied with court orders, however Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s May 19 call to his supporters to block access to courts throughout the country was deemed by some circles as pressuring the judiciary.

Law enforcement bodies failed to effectively investigate or prosecute most allegations of domestic violence, the report says. Domestic violence against women was widespread, and women rights activists become targets of hate speech. The latter are criticized for undermining the foundations of the “traditional Armenian family” and spreading “Western values.”

The report also touches upon the ongoing criminal case into the March 1-2, 2008 events in Yerevan, involving Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan. The State Department cites the 2018 report of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović, which stresses the importance of “strictly observing of the rule of law, judicial independence, transparency and fair trial” in the process.

Reflecting on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the report says: “Separatists, with Armenia’s support, continued to control most of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding Azerbaijani territories. The final status of Nagorno-Karabakh remained the subject of international mediation by the OSCE Minsk Group, co-chaired by France, Russia, and the United States.”

According to the Department of State, violence along the contact line continued at lower levels compared with previous years. “Recurrent shooting caused deaths, primarily to military members. Following the outbreak of violence in 2016, the sides to the conflict submitted complaints to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) accusing each other of committing atrocities during that time. The cases remained pending with the ECHR,” the report reads.

Last month, Athena Manoukian won Depi Evratesil 2020 with the song “Chains on You”. Following her win, she announced via Instagram that she was going to return to the studio to revamp the track for the contest. We got a small snippet of what to expect last week, but now we have the full revamp and music video!

Late last month, the team working on the revamp for Athena Manoukian’s “Chains On You” began to tease the revamp for the Armenian entry. In the clip, a short snippet of the instrumental confirmed that the revamp will feature heavier bass and more Armenian instrumentation. In fact, producer Artem Valter teased “808s [that] will hit the Eurovision stage HARD”.

The video was directed by Arthur Manukyan, and Athena was styled by Mary Stepanyan.

You can now see for yourself if what the team were cooking up:

Athena Manoukian was born in 1994 in Athens, Greece and is of Greek-Armenian decent. Although she has never performed at Eurovision (Junior or otherwise), she has some interesting ties to the contest. In 2008, she participated in the Greek national final for the 2008 Junior Eurovision with “To Fili Tis Aphroditis”.

In 2017 she wrote the music and lyrics for former Eurovision winner Helena Paparizou’s “Palia Mou Agapi”. The track featured on the singer’s 9th album Ouranio Toxo, which reached number one in Greece (no pun intended) and is certified Platinum.

In 2018, she made the Six Chair Challenge stage of X Factor UK, having made a splash with her audition with Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love”. Following this, expressed interest in participating in the contest, either for Armenia or Greece. Answering fan questions on her Instagram story, she was met with a number of requests for her to participate in the contest for both Greece and Armenia. Fast forward to February 2020, and she is now the Armenian representative for Eurovision 2020!

What do you think of the revamp? Will Armenia return to the final in 2020? Let us know! Eurovision: Diamonds shining on Athena Manoukian! Armenia releases Eurovision revamp and music video

In February she won Depi Evratesil with her urban track “Diamonds” — a call for all people to unleash their potential and let their gifts shine. And on March 13 Athena Manoukian was most definitely shining as she released the final edit and revamp of her song, along with the music video.

Her time away from the spotlight has been put to very good use. The song — which nods to Cardi B, Drake and other icons of our time — is more polished and fine-tuned. And it comes with a cinematic masterpiece that sizzles like curry in hot oil. Give me that spice!

Some had complained that the original was monotonous. Well not anymore. Subtle production tweaks mean there are frequent changes in sounds and texture. New additions include a deep synth reverb, more prominent percussion taps and intense clapping. The presence of the claps adds to the fire and gives the electronic production a very human touch.

About 1:20 in we hear vocal breaths — a deep huh, huh, huh — and at 1:40 sci-fi space sounds take us to a new realm. The bridge at 2:15 now comes with major bass. Amid the instrumental Athena adds the lyrics “hurt me”, cutting through the vocal silence and creating a moment of intense connection. The final 20 seconds crank up the heat and when the song stops you want to hit replay. Just wow.

The sonic changes aren’t the only thing to cheer about. Athena has delivered a breath-taking music video that features on-point choreography and plenty of looks.

The video shows off Athena’s ability to move and steal the spotlight. Despite the presence of what feels like an army of dancers, all eyes go to her. At moments she stands on a massive diamond platform — helping to convey the new heights this song has reached. At other moments she serves face bathed in a purple light. Even when things go dim she shines bright like a diamond — teasing the beauty that will come in Rotterdam.

“I’m very happy to present my music video to everyone and I really hope that fans all around the world will love it!” Athena says in a statement sent to Wiwibloggs. “We had only 2 weeks after Depi Evratesil to revamp the song and shoot the music video, and after days and nights of rehearsals and preparations I’m very excited to share the result of our work. It is truly a joy working alongside such a professional team and believe me, we have a lot more surprises coming up!”

“Chains On You” is composed by Athena Manoukian and DJ Paco, and written by Athena Manoukian. The revamp of the song was done by Armenian singer/songwriter Artem Valter. The music video was directed by Arthur Manukyan — Armenia’s top director.
