The sixth case of coronavirus infection has been officially confirmed in Armenia already. It is unclear whether the disease will soon be contained or, on the contrary, it will take a new turn. While a more serious issue is whether the Armenian healthcare facilities will be ready to admit coronavirus patients and provide the necessary medical care to them if the disease further spreads.

The Armenian Ministry of Health says that the citizens infected with coronavirus are being treated only at Nork Infection Clinical Hospital. However, if the virus starts to spread, coronavirus patients will be isolated and treated in all hospitals with infectious diseases departments in the country.

Panorama.am tried to find out whether the Armenian provinces have the opportunity to handle possible coronavirus infections.

Shirak Province has an infectious diseases hospital, and at the moment it can house and isolate 75 patients at a time.

Leyli Aslanyan, Head of the Health Division of the Health and Social Security Department at the Shirak Regional Administration, told Panorama.am that the hospital has some of the necessary resources to treat coronavirus patients, adding the hospital the resources are always replenished.

“There is an infectious anti-tuberculosis hospital in Gyumri, and it is now ready to admit, isolate and treat patients. At the moment we are trying to equip this hospital in every possible,” Aslanyan said.

Asked if there are any trained doctors who will be able to serve citizens infected with coronavirus, she said they have received guidelines from the ministry and have submitted them to medical facilities. “We are also holding trainings of doctors based on these guidelines. That is, we are following the instructions of the ministry,” she said.

Nune Gevorgyan, Head of the Health Division of the Health and Social Security Department at the Syunik Regional Administration, told us that all five medical facilities in the region have infectious disease departments.

“The region is fully prepared to isolate and treat patients with coronavirus if needed. Apart from the infectious diseases departments, we have separate buildings in 3 medical centers to serve these patients,” Gevorgyan said, adding that doctors are also properly trained to serve coronavirus patients.

Asked how many beds there are in the hospitals of the province, and how many patients the hospital will be able to house if necessary, Gevorgyan said she cannot not provide such data since there is no right to provide such information of medical importance over the phone. “I can only say that we are completely ready to admit patients should the need arises.”

There is no separate infectious diseases hospital in Kotayk Province, but all hospitals have wards or departments for infectious diseases.

“Four large medical centers have infectious diseases departments. There are 22 staffed beds in these hospitals, but more beds are added during the spread of acute respiratory infections. There has never been a case when a patient is denied treatment due to lack of a bed. Beds are regularly added up. The province has spare beds and can increase the number of beds by up to 50 percent in the infectious diseases department. If we follow this practice, up to 33 beds will be possible to be provided to sick citizens at the same time,” said Ani Chilingaryan, Head of the Health Division of the Health and Social Security Department at Kotayk Regional Administration.

Asked if there are any trained doctors in the province who will be able to provide the necessary medical care to possible coronavirus patients, Chilingaryan said they hold consultations with the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention via Skype every Friday, during which doctors exchange their experience and hold debates. “I don’t think we will face any problems in this regard,” she said.

Speaking to Panorama.am, a source from the Ararat Regional Administration only said that the local hospitals have infectious diseases departments, but refused to make any comments on the number of beds in hospitals, the preparedness of doctors and the available necessary medical supplies, asking us to submit a written inquiry.

Vasil Aslanyan, the acting head of the Health and Social Security Department of Vayots Dzor Province, said that they have a well-equipped regional infectious diseases department located in the town of Vayk.

“We held a Skype consultation with the chief epidemiologist chaired by the governor, presenting the demands and problems of the hospitals, after which we were provided with the appropriate medical clothing – face masks, scrubs, eyeglasses,” said Aslanyan, adding they expect to receive a new batch of clothing soon.

According to him, people arriving in Armenia from Iran who experience coronavirus symptoms are immediately sent to Nork Infection Clinical Hospital where they are tested.

“For example, a week ago an Indian tourist applied to us with symptoms of a virus. We immediately sent him to Nork Infection Clinical Hospital where he tested negative for coronavirus and was discharged from the hospital,” he said.

If a coronavirus epidemic emerges in the country, the infectious diseases department of Vayots Dzor Province will be able to accommodate 80 patients at once.

The regional administrations assure that they are able to treat patients in case of the further spread of coronavirus in the country, but there is no need to panic because the illness is not so serious, and if citizens follow the Health Ministry’s recommendations and the personal hygiene habits, it will be easier to avoid the disease.

Armenia has first case of coronavirus to go beyond capital

JAM News
March 13 2020

The mayor of Etchmiadzin, which is 20 kilometers from Yerevan, has already confirmed the presence of the virus, but is urging people not to panic

The first case of coronavirus in Armenia has gone beyond the capital of Yerevan.

On 12 March, it was announced that an individual in Etchmiadzin has been infected with coronavirus.

This information has already been confirmed by Mayor Diana Gasparyan. They are keeping 40 people in isolation. In total, 57 citizens are being kept in isolation throughout the country.

On March 11, it was announced that three new coronavirus cases had been discovered in Armenia. One of them is a resident of the city of Etchmiadzin, located about 20 kilometers from the capital.

Now the total number infected in the country is four. The first case was discovered on March 1. The 29-year-old citizen came from Iran.

On March 12, a video appeared on Facebook showing ten ambulances rushing down the streets of Echmiadzin.

The mayor of the city explained that the ambulances were transporting citizens who had contact with a sick resident of Echmiadzin. At the same time, she urged people not to panic:

The infected citizen is now undergoing treatment at the Norq infectious diseases hospital. She’s feeling fine.”

In the comments on the mayor’s posts, Facebook users write that on March 8 there was a betrothal party for the son of the infected woman and many may have gotten infected there.

However, the deputy director of the Etchmiadzin Medical Center Karine Khachikyan states:

“All those individuals [40 people] who came into direct contact with the infected citizen were isolated and transferred to places of special detention.”

She also said that among those isolated, there was a doctor who examined those infected who arrived from Italy.

In Armenia, many are outraged by the fact that a resident of Echmiadzin, who returned from Italy about a week ago, was able to freely walk around the city and attend various events. The Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan has been criticized for not isolating those who have arrived from the epicenter of the infection.

Torosyan answered:

“All passengers cannot be isolated. Only confirmed cases and their direct contacts are isolated. The same thing has been done since yesterday – citizens who had direct contact with three new patients have been isolated, and their circle of contacts is being clarified. It is impossible to isolate everyone. The main thing is to quickly identify, confirm with a test, find the circle of contacts and prevent the spread.”

At the same time, Torosyan believes that the most effective way to combat the spread of the virus is self-isolation and the social responsibility of every citizen of the country:

“If the virus spreads and has a incubation period, then we cannot isolate thousands of citizens … I urge people who come from countries at risk to try to limit contacts and not leave home, and if symptoms appear, do not self-medicate, and contact the appropriate services so that we can correctly identify, conduct tests and determine the type of disease.

For those Armenian citizens who are still in Italy, a charter flight will be organized on March 15.

And the government is resolving the issue of quarantining citizens who will return with this special flight. There has not yet been a final decision on this issue.

A couple of days ago in Armenia there was complete calm, both on the streets and on social networks, then on March 11 the situation changed dramatically.

Users of the Armenian Facebook segment are demanding urgent measures to prevent the virus from spreading. Those passengers who arrive in the country from the “danger zones”, users are urged to isolate immediately, because most do not believe that people can self-insulate for two weeks.

Here are some of the comments:

“I do not believe that our citizens are so conscious and will stay at home! And relatives will come running: hugs, kisses.”

“And who will monitor this home quarantine? Now, if everything in China is blocked with nails, it will be home quarantine.”

“You have to be absolute idiots to treat the coronavirus so negligently … What kind of“ home quarantine ”can we talk about? With our level of medicine and our discipline, everyone will rest here. ”

YEREVAN. – Do you think all problems will be resolved by closing the airspace? It could make the problem worse because the situation would be more difficult if these same passengers who are coming and are coming with the infection had come with transit. Tatevik Revazian, Chair of the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia, told this to reporters.

A charter flight from Italy is expected on Sunday, and in this regard Revazian said the passengers on board this flight will be separated from other passengers at Yerevan’s international airport.

“They are tourists, students, there are Armenians living there [on board this flight],” she added, in particular.

Asked if it would be safer to close the airspace with several countries, Revazian said: “Do you think all problems will be resolved by closing the airspace? It could make the problem worse because the situation would be more difficult if these same passengers who are coming and are coming with the infection had come with transit. We have a direct flight, we can arrange specific events at the airport so that they are separated from other passengers.”

BelTA, Belarus

YEREVAN, 13 March (BelTA – ARMENPRESS) – Belarus and Armenia are planning to set up a joint enterprise to produce elevators, Belarus’ Forestry Minister Vitaly Drozhzha said at a meeting of the Armenian-Belarusian intergovernmental commission in Yerevan.

“We have suggested setting a joint enterprise to manufacture elevators in Armenia. Now the country is actively replacing elevators in high-rise buildings. The enterprise could also provide maintenance services,” the minister said.

Armenia’s Minister of Economy Tigran Khachatryan told the media that the production of elevators in Armenia can become one of the priority areas. “The future of elevators production depends on a big elevator program for apartment buildings supervised by the Yerevan Council City. We have put forward all the proposals to Belarusian partners to be discussed on a competitive basis. These discussions take place in different formats, and when their implementation becomes possible from the point of view of competition, we will do everything to ensure that our Belarusian partners find support in Armenia to implement their program,” Tigran Khachatryan said.
