Number of coronavirus-infected healthcare workers increases in Armenia, says minister

 14:55, 2 April, 2020

YEREVAN, APRIL 2, ARMENPRESS. One of the main tasks of the government is to protect the health of medics so that they can continue providing their services, Healthcare Minister of Armenia Arsen Torosyan said at a press conference, asked whether in addition to the 3 healthcare workers, who were infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), there are new cases among the doctors.

“It will be difficult to answer now, but yes there are new cases and their number is increasing. Of course, this is painful, but also is unavoidable. There are also some interesting cases when healthcare workers are sometimes being infected not in the workplace, but within their circles which are being clarified and isolation works are taking place”, the minister said.

In late December 2019, Chinese authorities notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about an outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, central China. WHO declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus a global pandemic and named the virus COVID-19.

According to the latest data, the number of people infected with the novel coronavirus in Armenia has reached 663. 4 death cases have been registered so far. 33 patients have recovered. 2490 people tested negative for the virus. The number of active cases is 626.

YEREVAN, APRIL 2, ARMENPRESS. President of the National Assembly of Armenia Arart Mirzoyan and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on defense and security affairs Andranik Kocharyan visited Erablur Pantheon, where they honored the memory of the victims of the 2016 April war, ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the parliament of Armenia.

The Office of the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia informed that Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan also visited Yerablur Pantheon, honored the memory of the April war victims, National Hero of Armenia Monte Melkonyan, Commander Andranik Ozanyan and Sparapet (Defense Minister) Vazgen Sargsyan.

The war between Artsakh and Azerbaijan named April war or the 4-day war took place in 2016 when the Azerbaijani troops made a sudden large-scale attack against Artsakh. The war lasted 4 days and ended on April 5, when the Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a ceasefire agreement in Moscow. The borderline between Artsakh and Azerbaijan remained nearly  unchanged following the war, but the Azerbaijani troops suffered at least 5-fold more casualties than the Armenian side, estimated at 558. The Azerbaijani troops also committed various war crimes during this period, including a footage of how the Azerbaijani soldiers were showing the decapitated head of an Armenian soldier to a group of villagers and proudly celebrating their “heroic act”.  Some time later the official website of the President of Azerbaijan posted a picture where Ilham Aliyev was awarding the soldier who had committed that act of “heroism”.

ANCC Demands Retraction of Tweet Made by Canadian Embassy
on Artsakh Elections and for the Ambassador to be Recalled.

(OTTAWA) – Earlier
today, the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) sent a letter to Canada’s
Foreign Affairs Minister, the Hon. François-Phillipe Champagne, urging the
minister to demand the retraction of a reckless tweet made by the Canadian
Embassy in Ankara regarding the recent General Election that took place in the
Republic of Artsakh. Furthermore, the ANCC demanded for the ambassador to be
recalled “for his irresponsibility and his inability to defend and uphold
Ottawa’s official foreign policy objectives of peace and balanced diplomacy”

In a tweet
published on Wednesday, April 1st, the Canadian embassy independently made a statement
voicing Canada’s support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and not recognizing
the fair and free elections held in Artsakh. The tweet was not shared nor
endorsed by Global Affairs Canada.

“Canada has
always maintained a balanced approach towards the peaceful settlement of the Artsakh
(Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict through its support of the Organization for
Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Minsk Group initiative that is
based on the core principles outlined in the Helsinki Final Act.” read a part
of the letter.

“This tweet does
not reflect Canada’s balanced position on the issue and it must be retracted immediately”
said Hrag Tarakdjian and Shahen Mirakian, co-presidents of the ANCC, commenting
on the issue.

In the letter, the
ANCC co-presidents added “Such statements not only fuel anger and concern
within Canadians but have the potential of exposing shortcomings within our
foreign service, something we cannot allow to happen. Global Affairs Canada
simply cannot allow its diplomats abroad to interpret the government’s position
as they see fit.”

“The principle
of self-determination, enshrined in the Helsinki Final Act, must be
unconditionally upheld in any conflict settlement. These fair and free
elections, that witnessed over 72% turnout, were a powerful and remarkable
testament to that principle of utmost importance. Failing to realize this is
what will impede a constructive peace process and jeopardize the safety and
security of the people of Artsakh. Self-determination and democratically
elected representatives are the only guarantees to preserve Artsakh’s security
and prevent a genocidal campaign.” mentioned the letter, on which the Prime
Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, all party leaders and their foreign
affairs critics were copied on.

How is Armenia Civil Aviation Committee rated in European Aviation Safety Agency report?

News.am,  Armenia
April 3 2020

23:08, 03.04.2020

Based on the information received by 168.am, the International Civil Aviation Organization has revoked the license of the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia, and this may have very negative consequences for the entire civil aviation and particularly for pilots who might simply not be allowed to fly planes.

The source of the website explained that it’s not about revoking the license (the European Aviation Safety Agency has provided the results of inspection for the month of February and there is information that the Civil Aviation Committee has a rather bad rating). If it is recorded that the authorized body (Civil Aviation Committee) isn’t capable of properly supervising Armenian aviation organizations and has serious shortcomings, the licenses issued by the Armenian side won’t be accepted in Europe, and Armenian airline companies might not fly to Europe.

Asked if Armenian pilots might have problems based on the results of the report, 168.am’s source said Armenia’s certificates were reputable and even Russian pilots wanted to receive certificates in Armenia, but now there might be a serious problem.

Acting General Secretary of the Civil Aviation Committee Hayser Gasparyan told 168.am that he couldn’t answer the question and later said the Committee is dealing with coronavirus-related issues and recommended following the official news.

168.am also talked to Advisor to the Prime Minister for Aviation Hakob Tchagharyan, who assumed that the Civil Aviation Committee was the initial source of the information since there hasn’t been any outflow of information from the government.

According to Hakob Tchagharyan, the report is a 57-page English-language report that he is currently becoming familiar with so that he can deliver a report to the Prime Minister. Tchagharyan added that he couldn’t say anything about the content so long as he hasn’t reported to the Prime Minister.
