Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Frank Pallone on Tuesday called for expanded U.S. military assistance to Armenia and the immediate suspension in military assistance to Azerbaijan, citing the Aliyev regime’s ongoing attacks against Armenia and Artsakh, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) reported.

“The United States should immediately suspend military aid to Azerbaijan until its government ceases its attacks against Armenia and Artsakh, agrees to the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts, and proves it has halted all human rights abuses,” Pallone stated in his testimony to the House Armed Services Committee. “We must also strive to send a more supportive signal to our regional partners currently undergoing positive, democratic transitions like Armenia by increasing security assistance and bolstering strategic cooperation between our countries.”

Monday’s cross-border sniper fire by Azerbaijan injured two Armenian servicemen and hospitalized a child who was shot in the chest while playing on his apartment balcony.

Media Advocate urges Armenian authorities not to use epidemic for political purposes

Panorama, Armenia

Media Advocate initiative issued a statement on Wednesday, urging the Armenian authorities not to use the coronavirus outbreak in the country for political purposes.

Below is the full text of the statement:

“The National Assembly adopted the draft law on amendments to the Armenian law “On Legal Regime of State of Emergency and the Law on Electronic Communication” with 71 votes in favor. According to the bill, during a state of emergency, the movement, calls and SMS data of individual citizens using telecommunications operators, will be collected and may be used at any time.

Media Advocate initiative regrets that the bill which is actually nothing but an invasion into someone else’s private life was in fact adopted. This project was opposed by the human rights defender of the Republic of Armenia, as well as by a number of media representatives and human rights organizations.

After failing to secure a quorum, the ruling party lawmakers convened a special session for passing the bill and, as opposition lawmakers state, they were informed about the session five minutes after the session began: as a result, the actual session was held without opposition representatives.

The emergency state, established because of coronavirus, is not yet a basis for invading into people’s private lives. We urge to adhere to the principles of human rights and not to reach their ultimate and total abolition by means of these restrictions.

Media Advocate initiative urges the authorities to refrain from using the epidemic for their political interests. The technical means, the human and financial resources that are planned to be used when implementing his project, are not justified and are actually new means of fighting against the opposition.”

I was amazed when I saw that face masks weren’t enough in the US, a country that is provided with everything. It turns out that something like this can also happen. This is what former Soviet dissident Paruyr Hayrikyan told reporters today.

According to him, people in both the US and Armenia weren’t treating the threat of the spread of COVID-19 seriously. “The Americans said this was all exaggerated…I didn’t notice anything unusual until the last day of my stay,” Hayrikyan said.

He stated that the governments of all countries are taking measures to fight against COVID-19, especially countries where people came to power and obtained positions without difficulties. “The current state of emergency in Armenia has helped create rather favorable conditions for the authorities to say that they are irreplaceable, the people’s salvation and there is a need for national unity,” Hayrikyan said, adding that he was amazed at how people in Armenia were at ease, especially the health minister and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai has commented on the so-called “elections” held March 31 in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

“With regard to the “general elections” that took place today in Nagorno-Karabakh, NATO does not accept the results of these “elections” as affecting the legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh and stress that the results in no way prejudge the final status of Nagorno-Karabakh or the outcome of the ongoing negotiations to bring a lasting and peaceful settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” the NATO official wrote on Facebook.

Appathurai stressed that NATO supports the OSCE Minsk Group, including the recent statement of the co-chairs on this issue.
