YEREVAN. – The U.S. has been very proud of the work we were doing in Karabakh for the last 20 years, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy said during a video conference on Facebook.

Her comment came in response to questions regarding U.S. decision to halt demining assistance.

“The U.S. has been providing demining assistance and partnering with HALO organization where we made an investment of 17 million to keep people in this area safe,” she said.  “We see this program as having been very successful. What we do now is looking at other activities that we believe can contribute to conflict resolution and help bring lasting peaceful and just resolution to this very long-running conflict. We will continue our work and support for negotiations as the Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is a very important facilitation effort that we hope will be successful.”

YEREVAN. – Ruling “My Step” bloc rammed a controversial bill on using cell phone date through the National Assembly on Tuesday, March 31.

The opposition parties – Bright Armenia and Prosperous Armenia – boycotted the vote, while 69 lawmakers from the ruling “My Step” bloc voted in favor with one abstention.

The amendments proposed by the government would give the authorities access to citizen’s cell phone data to track the contacts of coronavirus patients under the state of emergency. However, the Ministry of Justice insisted that they would track the calls and their length, but not the contents of the conversation. The ministry said the data would be destroyed a month after the state of emergency ends.

Earlier on Tuesday the opposition parties ruined the vote, and My Step got 65 votes “for”, which was not enough to pass the amendments in the second reading.

Armenia’s Deputy PM comments on the bill on phone data

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, Commandant Tigran Avinyan has commented on the government’s draft law regarding the access to the personal data about phone calls and SMS texts of citizens.

“Let’s say, I am an infected person. The automated system will show an employee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations my movement and the places I have visited, and if we combine that with the data about my phone calls, we can see with whom I’ve had contacts. The mentioned employee will call these people and ask them: “Have you come into contact with Tigran Avinyan recently?”

Our only goal is to inform these people, locate them and ask them to self-isolate. Being uninformed and unregistered in the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention is a potential source of spread of coronavirus. When people know they have come into contact with an infected person, they become very careful,” said Avinyan.

He has underlined that the bill does not indicate the government can decode the content of the citizens’ phone calls and SMS texts.

Armenia Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan phoned Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 31 March, BelTA  news agency reported, citing the press service of the Belarusian leader.

Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nikol Pashinyan discussed the operation of the economy in the current complicated conditions. The existence of serious problems and difficulties was mentioned, the source said.

The sides exchanged opinions about prices for the hydrocarbon resources Belarus and Armenia import from Russia. Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nikol Pashinyan agreed that natural gas is overpriced and it is obvious the prices are out of sync with the world and out of touch with the existing situation as a whole.

Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nikol Pashinyan discussed the operation of healthcare systems and efforts to counteract seasonal grave viral infections.

Bearing in mind the current state of affairs, the Belarus president and the Armenian prime minister looked into the possibility of arranging a meeting of the heads of state of the Eurasian Economic Union member states in order to discuss the economic challenges. Aleksandr Lukashenko put forward the initiative as the leader of the country presiding over the Eurasian Economic Union. The Belarusian leader stressed that there are urgent matters that need to be discussed in detail at the top level.
