YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. City authorities in the Georgian capital have illuminated the Tbilisi TV Tower in the colors of the Armenian flag in a sign of solidarity in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Tigran Virabyan said on social media.

“My colleague in Tbilisi, the Deputy Mayor Sopio Khuntsaria informed that the Tbilisi TV Tower has been painted these days in the colors of the Armenian state flag,”he said.

Virabyan quoted Khuntsaria’s comments: “We stand with you in this fight. Together we will overcome the epidemic”.

Virabyan thanked his Georgian counterpart and expressed words of support as well. “Together we are strong, everything will be all right”.

Pianist Hayk Melikyan to hold online charity virtual recital on April 25

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. The online charity virtual recital of pianist, Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia Hayk Melikyan, will take place on April 25, LIVE at 23:00 Yerevan time. It is dedicated to the 105th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and all proceeds from the concert tickets will be donated to the Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief (www.SOAR-us.org), reports Armenpress.

Hayk Melikyan will perform the works by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Komitas, Khachatryan, Babadjanyan, Dellalian and Gurdjieff during the recital.

“Today we live in difficult times, but we must never forget, regardless of our problems, the children who need us, because I am sure that we have potential Khachatryans, Komitases, Mozarts and Newtons among them. Of course, performing without the audience is strange for me, I missed the Yerevan audience very much, but I realize that staying at home today is vital for everyone and I hope I will be able to bring some warmth to people’s apartments and do something good together,”- said the pianist.

Additionally, this year, Armenia’s top leadership will pay tribute to the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial with a live performance by Hayk Melikyan.

Russia coronavirus cases rise by over 5,000 in one day

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. The number of coronavirus cases in Russia has risen by 5,236 over the past day to nearly 58,000 in all regions, TASS reports citing the anti-coronavirus crisis center.

At the moment, 4,420 people have recovered and another 513 people have died.

“Russia has registered a rise in the coronavirus infection cases to 57,999 (+9.9%) in 85 regions. Some 420 people have been discharged over the past day and 4,420 over the entire period. Over the past day, 57 coronavirus patients have died. The total death toll in Russia is 513”, the crisis center reported.

Some 43.3% of new coronavirus cases (2,275) are asymptomatic.

In late December 2019, Chinese authorities notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about an outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, central China. WHO declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus a global pandemic and named the virus COVID-19.

Armenian PM offers condolences over death of diplomat Ruben Shugaryan

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan offered condolences to the family and friends of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ruben Shugaryan on the latter’s death.

“It’s with great sorrow and deep regret that I heard the news of Ruben Shugaryan’s untimely demise. I express my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Shugaryan embodied the best features of an intellectual, with a broad worldview, active civic attitude and patriotism”, Pashinyan wrote on Twitter.

Armenian diplomat, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ruben Shugaryan has passed away on April 21 at the age of 58 in the United States.

Shugaryan has served as Armenia’s Ambassador to the United States from 1993 to 1999. From 2005 to 2008 he has served as Ambassador to Italy, Spain and Portugal (residence in Rome). He moved to the United States in 2008.

Artsakh cancels April 24 commemorative procession due to coronavirus fears

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. The annual April 24 mass procession in Artsakh commemorating the Armenian Genocide victims has been cancelled amid the coronavirus pandemic.

So far, Artsakh has only 7 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and the authorities have declared a state of emergency and restrictions to prevent a potential outbreak.

Mass gatherings are banned in the country.

The authorities called on citizens to refrain from visiting in large groups the Armenian Genocide memorial in Artsakh on April 24.

Armenia also cancelled the traditional commemoration events for April 24, and instead online remote events are set to take place.

Lake Sevan level rises by 3cm

GAVAR, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. The water level of Lake Sevan has increased by 3 cm compared to April 21 of 2019, the HayHydromet Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told ARMENPRESS.

As of Lake Sevan is situated at an altitude of 1900 meters and 53 centimeters above sea level.

Between January 9 – April 21 of 2020, 44 million 563 thousand cubic meters of water flowed into Lake Sevan through the Arpa-Sevan tunnel. An increase in discharge is observed in the lake’s inflow rivers.

Coronavirus: Most of the infected people recover in Iran

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. According to the latest data, the number of people infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Iran has increased by 1,1194, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 85,996, the Armenian Embassy in Iran said.

94 more deaths have been registered in the past one day. The death roll has risen to 5,391.

3,311 citizens are in serious condition.

2,148 more patients have recovered, and the total number of recoveries has reached 63,113.

Chief of General Staff of Armenian Armed Forces visits military units

Chief of General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Artak Davtyan visited today military units located in the north-eastern direction to get acquainted with the organization of the daily service and the ongoing renovations works, the defense ministry of Armenia told Armenpress.

Lieutenant-General Artak Davtyan also visited the military bases, got introduced on the situation in the border, the combat preparedness level of the staff, as well as the engineering works carried out in the frontline.

He gave respective instructions to the commanders of the divisions on raising the efficiency of the military service and promoted the distinguished servicemen.

Lithuanian government to provide medical aid to Armenia

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. The Lithuanian government will allocate 100,000 euros to Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine for acquiring medical supplies, Foreign Minister of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius‏ said on Twitter.

“Lithuania continues standing by its Eastern Partners: Lithuanian Government decided to allocate 100K euros for acquiring medical supplies, made by Lithuanian companies, as a humanitarian assistance for Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine aimed at combating COVID19”, the FM said.

According to the latest data, the number of people infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has reached 1,473. 24 people have died. The total number of recovered patients is 633.
