Potentially breakthrough COVID-19 treatment developed by UAE stem cell center

YEREVAN, MAY 2, ARMENPRESS/WAM:  A patent has been granted by the Emirati Ministry of Economy for the development of an innovative and promising treatment for COVID-19 infections using stem cells, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reports.

The treatment was developed by a team of doctors and researchers at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center, ADSCC, and involves extracting stem cells from the patient’s own blood and reintroducing them after activating them. The patent was granted for the innovative method in which the stem cells are collected.

The treatment was administered in the UAE to 73 COVID-19 patients who have all been successfully treated and cured of the virus by inhaling the treatment into their lungs after it has been nebulized into a fine mist. It is hypothesized to have its therapeutic effect by regenerating lung cells and modulating the immune response to keep it from overreacting to the COVID-19 infection and causing further damage to healthy cells.

The treatment has successfully undergone the initial phase of clinical trials, demonstrating its safety. None of the patients who have received the treatment reported immediate adverse effects and there have been no interactions found with the conventional treatment protocols for COVID-19 patients. Trials to demonstrate the efficacy of the treatment are ongoing and are expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.

It is worth noting that the treatment has been given to patients along with the conventional medical intervention and will continue to be applied as an adjunct to established treatment protocols rather than as a replacement.

This treatment is an addition to the arsenal of interventions and is representative of the concerted effort and commitment of the UAE government to bring an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. Non-pharmacological interventions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 such as staying at home, social distancing and infection prevention and control measures remain necessary to reduce the burden of the disease on the healthcare system.

The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center is a specialist healthcare center that focuses on cell therapy, regenerative medicine and cutting-edge research on stem cells.

Lynch mob in Armenia: hundreds riot in the provincial city of Gavar

JAM News

01.05.2020

A double homicide has been committed in the Armenian city of Gavar, 90 km from the capital, provoking almost 500 people to form a lynch mob in protest.

The incident took place on April 28, but the motivation behind the bloody occurrence is not yet known.

Details on the incident

The Armenian media write that this is one in a string of recent events involving a showdown between underage Gavarians, which began two months ago. Adults tried to intervene in order to break up the youths, but shooting broke out.

A video appeared on social media showing cars come to a stop in the middle of the road before several men get out and start shooting.

As a result, two were killed, one of whom was a military police investigator. Four more were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Two of the attackers attempted to flee in their car, but crashed and are now also in the hospital.

Additional police forces were sent from Yerevan to Gavar. The chief of police himself went to the scene.

While representatives of law enforcement agencies worked at the crime scene, a crowd of 500 people burst into the Gavar hospital where the wounded had been taken.

After breaking through the police blockade, hundreds of people smashed everything in the medical center and reached the ward where the two shootout participants were held. Media wrote that they were friends and relatives of the dead. The mob then slit the throat of one of the injured men.

However, the press service of the investigative committee denied this report, officially declaring that after police intervened, the Gavarian ‘avengers’ “did not commit the crime and dispersed.”

More than 50 attack participants have already been detained. The Gavar hospital, despite the attack, remains open and under the surveillance of special police in case there is another riot.

Social media commentary

People on social media are following the developments and actively commenting. Here are some of the posts published on Facebook:

“What a shameful situation! When people have nothing to do, everyone becomes a crime boss. Of these 500 people, 300 certainly do not even have money for bread.”

“Fine, the young people don’t understand, they’re hot blooded, but look at what the adults have done. There is no mutual respect, no ability to forgive each other! Everyone feels like they know everything! What blame is there to be put on the police or the government?”

“Setting aside the anger of youths, since that’s something we can understand – they’re young. But how could the police allow 500 people to break into the hospital and kill everyone there? If they all live in one village, then you must punish the whole village!”

“The police must do their job and be stricter!”

“They say we’re in a state of emergency! Where were the policemen who always follow us and check our travel passes?”

Ex-Armenian defense minister warns of ‘further disaster’ amid relaxation of coronavirus measures too soon

Panorama, Armenia
May 1 2020

The relaxation of coronavirus lockdown measures too soon could lead to a “further disaster”, Armenia’s former Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan warned on Thursday.

“These days, here has been a lot of talk about Sweden’s ‘bold’ response to the coronavirus pandemic. Final conclusions can only be drawn after overcoming the epidemic, but at the moment the death rate in Sweden is 12.2%, almost twice as much as the international rate of 7%. It stands at 4% in its neighboring Denmark and Finland which are taking tough measures,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Three days ago, Harvard University researchers and experts from the Central Hospital of Massachusetts developed a model simulator which makes it clear that even if the curve flattens, lifting restrictions sooner than 12 weeks can result in a much graver situation in terms of both the number of infections and deaths in July-August.

“The consequences of “reopening” and shifting the main focus to self-awareness could arise in 20-30 days. At this point, even if the toughest measures are taken the further disaster could fail to be prevented,” the ex-minter stressed.

He agreed that home treatment of mild cases of CVID-19 seems to have no alternative not considering the option of setting up makeshift hospitals, but warned that the multigenerational living and people’s low level of self-awareness may lead to a spike in coronavirus cases.

“The results of the weeklong efforts can be completely neutralized and become pointless,” Vigen Sargsyan said.

Armenia’s PM, law enforcers ready to conceal crime: Arsen Babayan

Aysor, Armenia
May 1 2020

To cast a doubt on the devotion of an officer like former director of the National Security Service Arthur Vanetsyan is devoid of any moral rules, advocate Arsen Babayan told the reporters today outside of the office of Prosecutor General.

He demanded that deputy Hrachya Hakobyan, who is brother-in-law of Armenia’s PM Nikol Pashinyan, be subjected to responsibility.

Babayan demands from the prosecutor’s office legal assessment to the statement of the deputy.

“As a circle fighting against crimes, the Prosecutor’s office must at least check all the reported information by criminal-forensic procedure,” Babayan said, adding that in his statement Hakobyan does not ask question but confirms information.

“It appears that the prime minister or law enforcement forces of Armenia may conceal a crime. On the other hand, it appears that Hrachya Hakobyan makes false accusations,” Arsen Babayan said.

AGBU LA Cares: Meeting Needs in Unprecedented Times

Los Angeles, CA, (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) has launched AGBU LA Cares, an initiative designed to help those in need of basic food necessities due to recent financial hardship stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

AGBU and members of the community came together on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 to distribute the first round of food and water to those who need help during these difficult times. Adhering to strict social distancing and sanitary guidelines, items were packaged to help families prepare balanced and nutritious meals, with each box aimed to provide one to two weeks of food.

AGBU’s network of volunteers are supporting this endeavor by helping package, distribute, and fundraise. Levon Keshishian, Director of Facilities & Assets at AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School (MDS) in Canoga Park, is spearheading the important task of coordinating purchases and collections, working closely with the school chef to select a variety of high-quality products.

The volunteers packed cheese, lentils, salt, tea, oil, rice, spaghetti, and additional items in hopes of helping those who have limited access to food. In a symbolic gesture marking the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, AGBU launched the AGBU LA Cares initiative on Friday, April 24, 2020, inviting anyone in need to sign up at agbugiving.org/LAcares/. Over 100 boxes were reserved in less than 48 hours.

The contact-less pickups were arranged from the AGBU Canoga Park school and Pasadena high school and center where team members in requisite masks and gloves delivered the boxes and cases of water directly into the trunks of those who came by. With easy check-ins through designaged areas to make the pick-up both safe and efficient, both recipients and volunteers adhered to social distancing guidelines.

Yervant Demirjian, AGBU Central Board Member and the heart behind the AGBU LA Cares Initiative said, “We care more than ever about our extended family during these extraordinary times. As Armenians and Los Angeleans we feel even closer as a community. We hope this package from AGBU LA Cares will put a smile on the faces of those who need it the most, even if only for a few seconds.” AGBU will continue their efforts to help those who need it most. Distributions are extended through the month of May. If you or someone you know in the Los Angeles area are in need of essentials, please visit agbu.org/LAcares to reserve a box.

AGBU is the world’s largest non-profit organization devoted to upholding the Armenian heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs.
