Falsification of historical memory demonstrate lack of sense of dignity, Armenia tells Azerbaijan

Panorama, Armenia

Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Naghdalyan has reacted to comments of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Armenia in an interview with TASS news agency. A statement publicised by the Foreign Ministry’s press service reads:

“The 75th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War is a good occasion to recall and pay tribute to the sacrifices and unity of all the peoples who prevailed in the fight against the world’s evil.

We are convinced that historical memory is the greatest value of human dignity, and the falsification of historical memory and its use for narrow political interests demonstrate lack of sense of history, dignity and memory.

I regret that the president of Azerbaijan once again attempted to use the 75th anniversary of the victory over Nazism in World War II in his decades-long hostile propaganda against the Armenian people.

The contribution of the Armenian people to the victory of the Allied Powers in World War II has been inscribed in gold on the pages of world history.

We proudly remember the names of all Armenian heroes, whether fighting in the Red Army and its national divisions, in the armies of Allied Powers or in the ranks of the Resistance movement and intelligence. With their devotion and courage, they deserved to be commemorated along with their proud ancestors and national heroes, including the glorified warriors of World War I.

Today, on the territory of the Republic of Armenia, about six hundred monuments dedicated to participants of the Great Patriotic War are under the state protection and care. Those are the perpetuated witnesses of the history of our common victory. We condemn every attack on the monuments, and our resolve has been manifested not merely in words, but in the fact that no monument dedicated to World War II warriors has been a subject to attack in the history of Armenia.

From this perspective, I would like to address a question to the leadership of Azerbaijan in anticipation of an answer to be translated into certain actions: when will we witness the restoration of monuments of Chardakhlu settlement, which were dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, including those dedicated to the Soviet marshals Ivan (Hovhannes) Baghramyan and Hamazasp Babajanyan, which were destroyed in the Republic of Azerbaijan?”

Deputies ignored the presence of Armenia’s PM: expert on incident in the NA

Aysor, Armenia
May 8 2020

With its essence the current political system repeats the qualities of the former political system and today’s incident in the parliament is the best proof of it, political technologist Armen Badalyan told Aysor.am.

“The force that used to be opposition and was subjected to pressures by former authorities and now does the same against the current opposition. And all this happens at the presence of the prime minister,” he said.

Badalyan said that the “velvet” declared by the acting authorities has never existed but instead there has always been propaganda of hatred.

“The hatred propaganda gave its result. The gun hanging from the wall will shoot one day. With today’s actions the deputies ignored the prime minister and showed that their presence does not change anything,” he said, adding that it was not respect toward the PM.

12 Armenian ambulance medics contract coronavirus

JAM News

12 Armenian ambulance medics have been infected with coronavirus. This was announced on May 7 by Taguhi Stepanyan, director of the Yerevan ambulance service.

Earlier, Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan said that there are 320 infected medical workers in the country, meaning that these cases make up about 13%.

Armenia declared a state of emergency, in effect from March 16 to May 14, to combat the spread of coronavirus. However, on May 4, restrictions were lifted on the service sector, commerce, and most industrial enterprises, as well as street cafes and restaurants.

As of May 7, there are 2884 reported cases of infection in Armenia. 1185 patients have been cured, and 42 people could not be saved.

Details about the infected medics

The director of the Yerevan ambulance service said that the infected employees have no clinical symptoms and are being isolated.

Some ambulance medics refused to work with coronavirus patients. These workers were usually over the age of 55 and decided to take a vacation from work.

Taguhi Stepanyan says that the number of times the ambulance was called during the state of emergency was no higher than usual. In March and April, the service received about 650 calls per day, whereas in January and February, the number was close to 950. For comparison, last year during this period there were 850 calls per day. The director of the service associates this small difference with seasonal respiratory diseases that are not related to coronavirus.

She also reported that from March to May 6, the ambulance service transported 2,333 suspected coronavirus patients to the hospital. These were patients with problems typical of acute respiratory infections and pneumonia.

Taguhi Stepanyan also says that in April, doctors, nurses and emergency medical aid drivers were given bonuses. By order of the Mayor of Yerevan, doctors received 95,000 drams (about $200), and nurses and ambulance drivers received 70,000 drams (about $150).

Three bears that were being kept in cages as a tourist spectacle at a restaurant have been rescued after coronavirus forced the business to close.

The owner of the restaurant, in Armenia, said he no longer had any use for the animals and could not afford to feed them.

The mother bear and her two five-year-old sons are part of a series of rescue missions of wild bears held captive for “entertainment” in the country, after a government crackdown.

It is not uncommon to see bears in cages at restaurants or shopping centres in Armenia. They are often caught as cubs and spend their lives in captivity to attract tourists.

Rescuers have warned that if others are not saved, they could die of starvation and neglect.

The International Animal Rescue (IAR) charity said it had been campaigning to rescue the bears at the Ashtaraki Dzor restaurant for a year, but that the owner had refused to hand them over. A petition with nearly 100,000 signatures also urged the owner to give them up.

But when Covid-19 shut down businesses, he was left without food or funds to feed the animals. IAR and Armenian rescuers mounted an emergency mission to save the trio, sedating them to be taken away.

In 2017, the organisations launched a campaign to free all Armenia’s caged bears, and to date have rescued nearly 30, already being cared for at a sanctuary in the mountains.

The government now forces restaurant owners to sign a document pledging not to take bears and keep them in cages.

Ruben Khachatryan, who led the rescue team, said: “There is always an element of risk when anaesthetising any animal, and when you are dealing with three wild bears in a small space, you have to plan everything carefully. Fortunately, it all went without a hitch.”

Alan Knight, chief executive of IAR, said: “Our bear rescue centre is close to capacity, but we are making space to accommodate these poor animals while we also work on plans to expand our facilities.

“Once out of quarantine, they will be given freedom to enjoy fresh air and exercise in a natural environment. Their lives can only get better.

“It’s ironic that this deadly pandemic has produced a positive outcome for the bears. However, we can’t forget that there are still many more living in dreadful conditions.”

Coronavirus cases in Armenia top 3,000

TASS, Russia

A total of 42 people have died of the coronavirus in Armenia since the start of the pandemic, according to official data

YEREVAN, May 8. /TASS/. New coronavirus cases in Armenia have grown by 145 over the past twenty-four hours to 3,029, the republic’s Health Ministry reported on Friday.

“One hundred and forty-five new cases have been identified over the past twenty-four hours. As many as 1,218 people have recovered from the illness while the total number of infected people stands at 3,029,” the ministry said in a statement.

From May 4, the Armenian authorities eased the lockdown restrictions imposed over the pandemic. Under the government’s resolution, restrictions have been lifted on free movement of citizens, some types of economic activity are restarting and open air cafes and restaurants are reopening.

A total of 42 people have died of the coronavirus in Armenia since the start of the pandemic.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus — named COVID-19 by the WHO — have been reported in every corner of the globe.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 3,900,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 270,000 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 1,344,000 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.
