Asteroid or man-made object – what sparkled in Armenian skies tonight?

YEREVAN, MAY 28, ARMENPRESS. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia (MES) or Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory have no fact-based data. Spokesperson of the MES Edmon Zargaryan informed ARMENPRESS that they received an emergency call about an asteroid dropping in Armenia, but there are no traces that should be present following an asteroid drop.

‘’We received an emergency call from Nor Nork 6th Micro-District that some asteroid has passed sparkling. The caller has seen something like that, but the locations showed that it happened near Byurakan community, Ashtarak region. We have inquired from relevant bodies of the region, but no one has any fact-based data, there is no trace that should exist after the drop of an asteroid’’, Zargaryan said.

[See Video]
Watching the footage about the possible drop of an asteroid that went viral on May 28, Director of Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory Areg Mikayelyan assumes that the object is a small asteroid, but can also be a man-made object.

‘’Small celestial bodies are not monitored, but bigger ones, which pose danger, are permanently monitored at very great distances. There are always small asteroids. Watching that footage one can assume that it was an asteroid. When an asteroid of a few centimeters falls, it sparkles brightly. We cannot say what it was until discovering it. The alternative to the asteroid is some man-made rocket, which has crashed or exploded and one of its parts fell to the Earth’’, Mikayelyan said.

RFE/RL Armenian Report – 05/28/2020

                                        Thursday,
Infected Official Slams Armenian Health Authorities
        • Artak Khulian
Armenia -- A medical worker clad in protecive gear and an ambulance parked at
the entrance to Surp Grigor Lusavorich hospital, Yerevan, April 8, 2020.
A senior government official infected with coronavirus has lambasted the
Armenian health authorities, saying that he did not receive adequate medical
care in hospital and was sent home despite developing more health problems.
Faced with a rapidly growing number of coronavirus cases, the authorities
stopped late last week hospitalizing or isolating people who show mild symptoms
of the disease or none at all. They also began discharging fully or mostly
asymptomatic patients from hospitals.
The Ministry of Health said that state-run policlinics across Armenia have been
ordered to monitor such patients and give them necessary treatment or medication
if need be.
Aram Babajanian, an adviser to the head of the Armenian government’s Urban
Development Committee, and his wife were discharged from a Yerevan hospital at
the weekend more than one week after testing positive for coronavirus.
In an interview with Hetq.am published late on Wednesday, Babajanian claimed
that they barely underwent any treatment in the hospital and were sent home
despite continuing to suffer from pneumonia and not having a second coronavirus
test. He said a handful of hospital workers only measured their temperature and
blood oxygen levels twice a day and left most of their questions unanswered.
Babajanian also claimed that the purported treatment caused him to develop a
fungal disease and problems with his liver.
The 68-year-old official stood by his allegations when he spoke to RFE/RL’s
Armenian service by phone on Thursday.
“I don’t know now whether or not I still have pneumonia and whether or not I’m
still a coronavirus carrier,” he said. “As a result of the ‘treatment’ given to
me, my [blood] test results only worsened and I don’t know the current state of
my liver.”
“How should I continue my treatment and where should I have blood tests or a
computerized tomography scan to find out the condition of my lungs if I’m
supposed to remain in self-isolation for two weeks?” asked Babajanian.
The Ministry of Health dismissed the claims, insisting that the couple’s
treatment was proper and “smooth.” A ministry statement said the hospital in
question has a good track record of saving the lives of COVID-19 patients.
The statement also charged that Babajanian and his wife are unhappy because they
demanded privileged treatment from the hospital staff but were denied it. It
said they wanted to be checked by a medical professor.
Babajanian categorically denied that. “I demand that they name the person to
whom I said such a thing … They are telling obvious lies,” he said.
Babajanian further alleged that doctors from a policlinic close to his place of
residence refused to help when he contacted them after being released from the
hospital.
Speaking at a news briefing held later in the day, Health Minister Arsen
Torosian acknowledged “some tension” between policlinic staff and infected
Armenians confined to their homes. He blamed it on the inexperience of
policlinic doctors who are only now starting to deal with coronavirus infections.
Torosian also urged disgruntled patients to alert his ministry about problems
encountered by them through a special telephone hotline.
Inessa Petrosian, a well-known lawyer, was also told to self-isolate in her
apartment after contracting COVID-19 recently. She too complained about the
plight of people like her.
“I manage to somehow solve my issues but I’m sure that many other citizens stuck
in their homes are only doing one thing: measuring their temperatures,”
Petrosian told RFE/RL’s Armenian service. “But this virus is such that you don’t
know what your temperature will be moments later. People who haven’t had their
lungs examined don’t know what other problems they may have shortly afterwards,
and nobody else cares.”
Armenia Reports Single-Day Record For Coronavirus Deaths

Armenia’s government dismissed on Thursday growing calls for a fresh nationwide
lockdown following a record-high number of daily coronavirus deaths registered
in the country.
The Ministry of Health reported in the morning that 15 more people died from
coronavirus in the past day, taking the official death toll to 113.
The toll does not include the deaths of 44 other people infected with the virus.
The ministry says that those fatalities were primarily caused by other,
pre-existing conditions.
The ministry also reported that the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases
in the country of about 3 million rose by 442 to 8,216. The official figures
suggest that more than a third of daily coronavirus tests came back positive on
Wednesday.
According to Health Minister Arsen Torosian, at least 324 COVID-19 patients
treated in Armenian hospitals are now in a severe or critical condition. “These
numbers explain the sharp increase in deaths,” said Alina Nikoghosian, a
spokeswoman for Torosian.
Torosian repeatedly warned last week of an impending shortage of intensive care
beds in the hospitals, saying that they may soon be unable to give life-saving
treatment to all patients. He said this could lead to a significant increase in
coronavirus deaths.
The Armenian health authorities have so far set up a total of only about 200
beds at the intensive care units of the hospitals dealing with the COVID-19
epidemic. More than 150 of them were reportedly occupied as of Sunday.
The accelerating spread of the virus forced the authorities on May 22 to stop
hospitalizing or isolating infected people showing mild symptoms of the disease
or none at all. They also began discharging asymptomatic patients from the
hospitals.
The daily numbers of new COVID-19 infections and deaths have increased
significantly since the Armenian government began lifting in mid-April lockdown
restrictions imposed in late March. All sectors of the Armenian economy were
allowed to resume their work by May 10.
Armenia -- Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian speaks during a cabinet meeting in
Yerevan .
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian made clear on Wednesday that despite the “quite
severe situation” the government is not planning to again restrict people’s
movements and shut down much of the economy. He repeated that ordinary Armenians
can easily defeat the virus if they frequently wash their hands, wear face masks
and practice social distancing.
About a dozen Armenian civic organizations strongly criticized on Thursday this
strategy of tackling the epidemic, saying that the safety rules set by the
government are flouted by many citizens and not properly enforced by the police
and sanitary authorities.
In a joint statement, they warned that the country’s overstretched healthcare
system is facing “collapse” because of the growing number of new COVID-19
infections. The only way to prevent a greater disaster is to impose a strict
nationwide lockdown that would last for at least two weeks, said the statement.
Pashinian’s spokeswoman, Mane Gevorgian, disagreed, saying that the office of a
government “commandant” enforcing a coronavirus-related state of emergency in
Armenia “at the moment sees no need to again impose a lockdown.”
“That is one of the scenarios but it is not a desirable one,” Gevorgian told
RFE/RL’s Armenian service. “Given the economic situation and the [warming]
weather, it’s very hard to keep people at home.”
“People want to get out, which is why we can only urge people to follow the
rules when leaving their homes: to wear masks, practice social distancing and
not gather in groups,” she said.
Armenia -- Young women stroll in the center of Yerevan, May 25, 2020.
“Very soon people will start dying [in even larger numbers,] many of them
without receiving adequate medical aid,” countered one of the NGO statement’s
signatories, Daniel Ioannisian of the Union of Informed Citizens.
“This is also the result of actions and inactivity of the commandant’s office
and the police,” said Ioannisian. “In this sense, their approaches are
unacceptable. They can’t support the economy at the expense of human lives
because we are losing both the economy and lives as a result.”
The civic activist also said that the authorities failed to properly enforce the
lockdown imposed by them earlier this spring. He said the coronavirus crisis has
since become so serious that the authorities have not only switched to home
confinement of most infected people but also stopped tracing and isolating all
other individuals who have been in contact with them.
“The state is not trying to control the spread of the virus in any way simply
because it has reached such a scale that the state is not even able to control,”
added Ioannisian.

Asbarez: An Ode to May 28

The author, Van Der-Megerdichian, at the foot of the Sardarabad monument

BY VAN DER-MEGERDICHIAN

Armenia! Armenia outraged! Armenia broken! Armenia martyred! But Armenia liberated! Liberated by itself, liberated by its people with the help of the Armenian armies, with the support and the help of all Armenia, of the Armenia that fights, of the only Armenia, of the real Armenia, of the eternal Armenia!

102 years after our liberation, an Armenia exists. A fragmented Armenia, an Armenia partitioned, but nonetheless an Armenia that breathes.

To the phoenix that emerged from the ashes of genocide,

To the butchered nation that built a republic,

To the nation that avenges their unburied loved ones,

To the nation that for times countless looks death in the eye, but refuses to perish.

To the nation that responds to the injustices of Adana and Smyrna with the justices of Bash-Abaran and Sardarabad,

To the May that no longer allowed Armenians to become victims to the victimization Pan-Turkism brought onto them,

To the May that brings light and hope following the darkness and hopelessness of April,

To the May that fights to achieve justice for ourselves after the world failed in giving it to us,

To the May that birthed the independence of Armenia and the liberation of Shushi,

To the May’s that will set Western Armenia free,

May the month of May drown the sorrows of April with bellows of triumph,

May the 9th of May and the 28th of May be burned in the psyche of the Armenian nation,

May the bell tolls of Sardarabad reverberate everlastingly throughout Armenia,

May the month of May teach Armenians that our salvation lies only within our strengths,

May Armenia see many more May’s.

Soldiers of Armenia, wherever you may be, rise! Rise to strengthen Armenia! Armenia prosperous! Armenia immortal!

Armenia! Armenia acclaimed! Armenia mended! Armenia martyred! To the Armenia that will be united! United by itself, united by its people with the help of the Armenian armies, with the support and the help of all Armenia, of the Armenia that fights, of the only Armenia, of the real Armenia, of the eternal Armenia!

Asbarez: Editorial: A National Agenda Propelled Independence

The Sardarabad monument (Photo by Matthew Karanian)

In was a bleak time in history for Armenians in 1918. Centuries of oppression by Ottoman rulers had manifested into full-blown Genocide on the Western front, while the Bolsheviks who toppled the Russian Czarist regime that ruled over Armenia’s Eastern front had their own plans to oppress through invasion and integration. The time had come to fight for independence or risk being absorbed by the powers that had wrought havoc on the Armenian Nation for centuries.

This might be simplifying a complex geopolitical reality facing Armenians in May 2018, but the need to be independent from foreign rule was born out of a national agenda that sought to bring together all Armenians on our ancestral soil and allow them to determine for themselves their own fate and destiny.

Being in service to the people, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation rose to the challenge and carried the mantle of independence, making it a national mandate to organize Armenians from all over the world to fight for our homeland.
The valiant and heroic efforts of those who fought for independence 102 years ago in the battles of Sardarabad, Bash-Abaran and Gharkiliseh established the first Republic of Armenia and made the dream of Armenia’s Independence a reality.

The victories on May 28, 1918 were rooted in a national ideology that while advancing the universal concepts of freedom and self-determination were uniquely Armenian in nature and every decision taken the government at the time was grounded in the firm belief of advancing justice, security and prosperity for every Armenian.

The national agenda at play in 1918, once again, became a driving force 70 years later with the spark of the Artsakh Liberation Movement in 1988 and guided the Armenian Nation to victory when Artsakh was liberated and declared itself an independent state.

Today, the Republic of Armenia, having regained independence in 1991, has become the nexus for our national aspirations. That is why now, more than ever, a national agenda is needed to regroup our nation and ensure that every Armenian—wherever they might be—is a soldier for the homeland and will fight for the national interests of Armenia and its people.

When Armenia became independent again in 1991, its leaders sought to marginalize the people and make themselves the beneficiaries of our national wealth, causing detrimental damage to nation-building efforts and the creation of a national agenda, which prioritizes the individual Armenian as the critical focal point in advancing national interests. Taking a page from the Soviet playbook—or not ridding themselves from it—successive governments looked at the population as being dispensable—and at times disposable—in their self-serving mission to amass personal wealth at any cost.

So, 100 years after Armenia’s Independence, when the people of Armenia rose up to reclaim their destiny and homeland by toppling the despotic regime, a new opportunity was born for Armenians around the world to engage in advancing the homeland and ensuring the development of a more just and equitable society that can thrive and persevere.

Today, however, some remnants of the previous regime are leveraging the wealth they usurped from the people to create obstacles for the advancement of the nation in hopes of staging a comeback and reestablishing their egregious rule.

Since the people’s movement in 2018 that ushered in a new government there have been positive changes in Armenia, the most important of which is the optimism of its people who are now vested in the future of the country. However, there have also been steps taken by the new government that harken back to the divisive methods of past leaders, which will only alienate the vary people the movement empowered.

We cannot afford to squander the opportunity that the people of Armenia created for our entire Nation in 2018 through the popular movement. The current government is no longer “new” and must be held accountable for its actions and equally praised for its positive advancements. Our criticisms of the regime must be mature and come from a place of strengthening our nation and not sowing enmity. The same applies to government representatives who, sometimes, have used their position to create factionalism that has no place in our society.

One thing is certain: there is no going back to the past. This means that every Armenian must work toward the strengthening of the republics of Armenia and Artsakh, thus ensuring its security and social justice for its people. Together we must demand a national agenda that is free of Soviet vestiges and not only serves the individual Armenia, but also advances historical justice that can only propel a future United, Free and Independent Armenia.

`As we mark the 102nd anniversary of Armenia’s independence and we recall the decisive victories that created our country—and continue to embolden those today who are protecting our borders in Artsakh and Armenia—we must recommit ourselves as soldiers of the nation and work collectively to overcome challenges and celebrate new victories.
