Georgia not going to open land borders yet due to COVID-19

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. Georgia has no plans yet to open its land borders because of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia told reporters today.

In early May the Georgian PM announced that Georgia will open for domestic tourism from June 15 and will also be ready to host foreign tourists from July 1. “We cannot make hasty steps now on opening the land borders. Movement of Georgian citizens and transportation of goods is absolutely not problematic today”, the PM said.

He said the Georgian side provides comfortable conditions for the international companies, carrier companies. At the same time the authorities control each truck and monitor the health condition of the drivers.

Georgia suspended air communication with all countries in late March due to the COVID-19 and shut down its land borders in mid-March. Georgia borders with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia.

Survey respondents consider COVID-19 the greatest problem facing Armenia

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. Most of the respondents of a survey, conducted by MPG LLC, a full member of the GALLUP International Association in Armenia, mentioned the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as the greatest challenge facing Armenia now.

“We asked the citizens to answer to the question “what are the three most important problems facing Armenia now”: 52,5% mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic, 28.6% – the unemployment, 17.2% – the economic situation. Usually, unemployment has always been in the first place, but it’s understandable why we now got such a picture”, Director of MPG LLC Aram Navasardyan said during a press conference.

The survey was conducted by phone. A total of 1,002 citizens participated in the survey. Alternative research error – 3%. The selection is representative according to the age-sex and place of residence of Armenian citizens. The survey was conducted from June 10 to 27.

88.1% of survey respondents positively assess Armenian PM’s activity

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. 88.1% of the respondents of a survey, conducted by MPG LLC, a full member of the GALLUP International Association in Armenia, positively assess Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s activity.

“49.4% of the respondents assess the PM’s activity fully positive, 38.7% – rather positive”, Director of MPG LLC Aram Navasardyan said during a press conference.

Navasardyan said 18.4% of the respondents said their expectations after Pashinyan’s election as PM have been fully justified, 66.7% said they have been justified to some extent.

“We also asked the citizens how they assess Pashinyan as a politician, and 53.9% of the respondents said fully positive, 34.6% – rather positive”, he said.

The survey was conducted by phone. A total of 1,002 citizens participated in the survey. Alternative research error – 3%. The selection is representative according to the age-sex and place of residence of Armenian citizens. The survey was conducted from June 10 to 27.

Macron names Jean Castex as new French Prime Minister

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has tendered his resignation after heading President Emmanuel Macron’s government for three years, reports BBC.

The president swiftly named centre-right mayor Jean Castex to lead a new team of ministers after a reshuffle.

Although Mr Philippe was considered more popular than the president, the ruling party had poor local election results at the weekend.

The Elysée palace said in a statement that Edouard Philippe had “today handed in the government’s resignation to the president of the republic, who accepted it”, adding that he would stay in place until a new government was appointed.

COVID-19: Lithuanian delegation of doctors and experts completes mission in Armenia

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan hosted Ambassador of Lithuania to Armenia Inga Stanytė-Toločkienė, the delegation of Lithuania and others to thank them for the assistance provided for fighting the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Armenian ministry of healthcare told Armenpress.

The Lithuanian team consisting of 11 people arrived in Armenia two weeks ago bringing medical items, equipment and COVID-19 test kits. The doctors worked with their Armenian colleagues in coronavirus designated hospitals, whereas the team of experts worked in the ministry of healthcare, the national center for disease control and prevention, etc.

The Ambassador expressed hope that the assistance provided by Lithuania to Armenia will have a positive impact not only on the anti-coronavirus fight, but also after that. She thanked the minister for the warm welcome.

In turn the head of the Lithuanian delegation presented their observations, conclusions on Armenia and gave recommendations over the current situation.

Commenting on the recommendations of the Lithuanian side, the Armenian minister said the issue of expanding the laboratories is among the priorities of the ministry and the works on this direction have already launched. He highlighted the support of the partners and expressed hope for constant cooperation.

At the end of the meeting certificates and souvenirs on behalf of the Armenian ministry of healthcare have been handed over to the Lithuanian delegation members as a sign of gratitude.

63.2% of survey respondents trust Armenia’s authorities, 23.8% – parliamentary opposition

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. 63.2% of the respondents of a survey, conducted by MPG LLC, a full member of the GALLUP International Association in Armenia, trust Armenia’s authorities, whereas the 23.8% trust the parliamentary opposition.

87.6% trust Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Director of MPG LLC Aram Navasardyan said during a press conference.

“We asked the citizens to what extent they trust the aforementioned: 3.6% said they fully trust the extra-parliamentary opposition, 21.7% said they rather trust, 4.5% said they fully trust the parliamentary opposition, 19.3% – rather trust, 22% said they fully trust the authorities, 41.2% said they rather trust, 57.1% said they fully trust the PM, 30.5% said they rather trust”, he said.

Armenian FM to pay working visit to Artsakh

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. Foreign minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan will depart for the Republic of Artsakh on a working visit, the MFA told Armenpress.

The FM is scheduled to meet with Artsakh’s President, Speaker of Parliament and Foreign minister.

Armenian Speaker of Parliament holds phone talk with Chairwoman of Russia’s Federation Council

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan held a telephone conversation with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko.

“During the talk I congratulated Mrs. Matviyenko on the holding and results of the referendum in Russia. We talked about the coronavirus-related situation, as well as discussed a number of issues of bilateral interest”, the Armenian Speaker of Parliament said on Facebook.

On July 2 Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan sent a congratulatory letter to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on the successful completion of the nationwide vote on amendments to the Russian Constitution.

Armenian President holds meeting with US Ambassador

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. President Armen Sarkissian hosted today US Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy ahead of the US Independence Day, the Armenian President’s Office told Armenpress.

The Armenian President congratulated the US Ambassador on the state holiday, wishing success to her and the good people of the United States.

President Sarkissian expressed gratitude for the constant assistance provided by the US government to Armenia, in particular in fighting the novel coronavirus pandemic, stating that the real friendship is demonstrated in difficult times.

The Ambassador said the United States continues supporting Armenia in the development of democracy, fight against corruption, reforms in different areas and creation of an attractive business climate for investors.

At the request of the Ambassador, the Armenian President introduced the Constitutional amendments and the process relating to the constitutional reforms. In this context, the President highlighted the public debates over the drafting process of the Main law and talked about the Commission on constitutional reforms.

The sides also discussed investments. They agreed that each investment should be protected not only by law, but also with the presence of a favorable and attractive environment.

The US Ambassador touched upon the American programs and investment opportunities aimed at developing Armenia’s economy.

President Sarkissian said the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the economy require quick response and flexible mechanisms for boosting investments. In this respect he considered the creation of investor’s rapid response working group as a key tool.

Highlighting the important role of the latest technologies for Armenia’s future, the President introduced the presidential initiative ATOM (Advanced Tomorrow) on science and technology development in the country and talked about the possible partnership within the frames of this initiative.

Armenia participates in Eastern Partnership Youth Engagement online summit

YEREVAN, JULY 3, ARMENPRESS. Armenia participated in the Eastern Partnership Youth Engagement online summit from July 2 to 3, the ministry of education, science, culture and sport told Armenpress.

Around 400-450 active, critical and responsible youth leaders and youth workers had a unique opportunity to hold a dialogue amongst themselves and with EU and EaP policy makers on achievements and challenges in the youth field in the European Union and its Eastern Neighbourhood region. Participants shared good practices and experiences in the field of youth work and youth policy in both the EU and Eastern Partnership countries.

Armenia’s deputy minister of education, science, culture and sport Artur Martirosyan participated in the summit and delivered remarks, talking about the issue of employment of the youth in Armenia, presenting the ongoing and upcoming programs and actions by the state aimed at promoting professional education, strengthening education-labor market ties, etc. In his speech the deputy minister also thanked the European Union for the assistance provided to Armenia in the fields of education and youth.
