SF Armenian School and Adjacent Community Center Vandalized With Curse Words, Ethnic Slurs

SFist, San Francisco

Members of San Francisco’s Armenian community were dealt an appalling sight Friday when they discovered the KZV Armenian School and its shouldering community center were painted with hateful, racist graffiti by vandals in the night.

Reported by various local news outlets (KTVU, SFGate, NBC Bay Area), another spate of racism unfolded yesterday in San Francisco. This time, however, it wasn’t an individual subjected to such malice, but rather two local Armenian community and educational facilities.

“As I came today at [eight] this morning, I saw the graffiti on the walls,” said school principal Grace Andonian to KTVU about the vandalism. “I was shocked. I was appalled. The community is in shock. Our families, students, alumni, they were all in shock to see these hate messages on the wall.”

Vandals spray-painted graffiti on almost every single wall at KZV Armenian School, leaving distasteful, racist remarks that referenced the Armenian Genocide which took place between April 1915 and May 1918. (Described as an “ethnic cleansing,” it’s estimated at least one million Armenians lost their lives during the over three-year campaign.)

The many painted messages contained not only curse words but also racist epithets of the Armenian people. Similar incidences to this have appeared across the nation and global due to the increased tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over a recent border dispute. For example: SFGate noted in their reporting of Friday’s spoliation that earlier this week, several people were injured after protests turned violent outside the Azerbaijan Consulate in Los Angeles.

One person was also arrested in that incident.

Both Mayor Breed and SF District Attorney Chesa Boudin expressed their disgust and “outrage” over the incident, each adding that such acts have no place in our city.

“The Armenian community is an important part of our city, and we stand with them,” the San Francisco mayor tweeted, with Boudin earlier saying “this is totally inconsistent with San Francisco values” and that his office is working with SFPD to hold the people responsible for this “CRIME” accountable.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also tweeted out her revulsion over the event, saying “the hateful defacing of this place of community & learning is a disgrace.”

SFPD has said their special investigations unit will be leading an investigation into the crime. Per NBC Bay Area, officers have said the possibility of this being a hate crime “isn’t being ruled out,” but they said the investigation is still in its early stages.

Any helpful tips and insights into the vandalism can be shared — anonymously or not — with local law enforcement by calling or texting SFPD’s Tip Line at (415) 575-4444; texts should start with the keyword “SFPD,” followed by the message.

Vancouver Armenians unite to confront Azerbaijani demonstrators

Public Radio of Armenia

TorontoHye – Around 100 Vancouver Armenian community members showed up in downtown Vancouver on July 25 to confront a smaller number of Azerbaijanis who came out chanting anti-Armenian slogans and holding posters.

Armenian community members were joined by St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church pastor Very Rev. Karekin Shekherdemian and St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic church priest Rev. Father Keghart Garabedian. The standoff in the heart of downtown in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery started off with singing of the Armenian National anthem followed by speeches and Armenian shoorjbar and lasted over two hours.

ANCC Western Region representatives Hagop Agopian and Palig Kochkarian read speeches condemning Azerbaijan’s recent attack against Davush province and called on the dictatorship in Baku to stop its continued aggression against Armenia and Artsakh. All the while, the Armenian protesters were chanting “Armenia wants peace, Azerbaijan wants war”, “Artsakh belongs to Armenia” and other pro-peace and anti hate slogans.

Meanwhile, around 50 counter protesters holding up Azerbaijani and Turkish flags kept shouting “Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan”, “Azerbaijan”.

The demonstration wrapped up with Hayr Karekin Shkherdemian leading the protesters in Lord’s Prayer and the singing of “Giligia.”

YEREVAN, JULY 24, ARMENPRESS. The countries selling arms to Azerbaijan must set clear preconditions in the contract which will prohibit their use first of all against civilians, MP representing ‘’My step’’ bloc Vladimir Vardanyan said, commenting on the positions of Armenia following its victories in July clashes against Azerbaijan which were presented by PM Pashinyan on July 23.

Referring to the establishment of an effective international monitoring mechanism and its possible results, Vardanyan said, ‘’If the side reach an agreement on the establishment of an effective international monitoring mechanism, they will express also their consent to preserve those rules. And from the point of view, the OSCE Minsk Group will have an opportunity to be more actively involved in that process’’.

Speaking about the tool of establishing direct contact between Armenian and Azerbaijani servicemen proposed by PM Pashinyan, the MP noted that the direct contact will in many circumstances give an opportunity to avoid from incidents which can take place when the sides have no deliberate intention to violate the ceasefire. Vardanyan also thinks that this tool can raise mutual confidence between the sides and become an important tool to avoid misunderstandings. ‘’But it’s hard to say if Azerbaijan will agree to given the military rhetoric in Azerbaijan’’, he said.

Referring to the firing at the civilians by Azerbaijan, Vardanyan expressed confidence that the recent incidents on the border with Armenia, as well as during the April war and the contact line in general, are just targeted attacks by Azerbaijanis against civilians, which can be assessed as not a side effect of the clashes, but a serious violation of the Geneva Convention or crimes against humanity.

‘’The countries selling arms to Azerbaijan must clearly understand that they should set preconditions of in which conditions and how those arms should be used’’, he said.

The MP also noted that the Minsk Group has no alternative and Armenia has always emphasized the necessity of the negotiations under the auspices of the Minsk Group and these negotiations should go on.

Referring to the recent developments on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, he said, ‘’We once again reaffirmed that no one should speak in the language of threats or use of force with Armenia or Artsakh. We reaffirmed our readiness to continue this process with peaceful negotiations. And we also showed that Armenia is capable to protect its borders and guarantee the security of the Republic of Artsakh and its population’’.

YEREVAN, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS. The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (Igor Popov of the Russian Federation, Stéphane Visconti of France, and Andrew Schofer of the United States of America) and Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office (PRCIO) Andrzej Kasprzyk released a statement over the recent clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

Armenpress presents the text of the statement:

“The Co-Chairs and PRCIO welcome the relative stability along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border since 16 July. The Co-Chairs appeal to the sides to take advantage of the current reduction in active hostilities to prepare for serious substantive negotiations to find a comprehensive solution to the conflict. The Co-Chairs stress once more that refraining from provocative statements and actions, including threats or perceived threats to civilians or to critical infrastructure, is essential during this delicate period.

The Co-Chairs note that recent public statements criticizing the joint efforts of the co-chairing countries, and/or seeking unilaterally to establish new “conditions” or changes to the settlement process format are not conducive to resuming a constructive dialogue. The Co-Chairs reiterate that political will to achieve a lasting peaceful settlement is best demonstrated by refraining from maximalist positions, adhering strictly to the ceasefire, and abstaining from provocative statements and actions.

The Co-Chairs and PRCIO express appreciation for the strong engagement by leaders of international organizations including the United Nations, OSCE, and European Union, whose calls for strict adherence to the ceasefire and renewed dialogue under the auspices of the Co-Chairs have aligned with and supported the Co-Chairs’ own intensive mediation efforts. We note as especially positive the impartiality of such interventions, which have urged the sides to focus on reducing tensions rather than on assigning to others the sole responsibility of causing the recent escalation. The Co-Chairs welcome the growing international consensus calling for de-escalation and a swift return to negotiations in good faith without conditions.

The Co-Chairs reaffirm that the principles and elements as laid out in their statement of 9 March 2019 continue to form the basis of their mediation efforts. The Co-Chairs are prepared to meet with the leaders or their designees at any time. The Co-Chairs also emphasize that OSCE monitors should return to the region as soon as possible”.

Armenian PM’s wife urges Azerbaijani women to join Women For Peace campaign

 11:56,

YEREVAN, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS. Spouse of the Armenian prime minister Anna Hakobyan commented on the recent clashes between Armenians and Azerbaijanis abroad.

In a Facebook post, Anna Hakobyan said on July 13, when the active military operations have started on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border as a result of the Azerbaijani attack and had a tendency to deepen, she has urged the Azerbaijani women and mothers “to call on their country’s leadership to stop the military operations and do not endanger the lives of Azerbaijani and Armenian soldiers”.

“I did this as author of the Women For Peace campaign, which aims at uniting women against wars, creating a favorable environment so that the leaders of the conflicting countries will search for solutions to conflicts around negotiation table.

Several mothers of Azerbaijani soldiers responded to this call through Azerbaijani media outlets greatly controlled by the leadership, and the answer was the following: “As a mother of a soldier I state: Fight. Go ahead Azerbaijani soldier. Fight. Homeland is the only mother of soldier. The fight for the homeland is a sacred fight”.

Thus, according to the Azerbaijani state propaganda, the Azerbaijani mothers rejected my call on stopping the military operations and moving towards peace. Instead, they announced that they are sending their sons to fight and die in the sacred fight. A large number of Azerbaijanis were killed in the following days”, Anna Hakobyan said.

She said it’s already several days the “sacred fight for the homeland” has gone beyond the boundaries of the conflict zone.

“Azerbaijanis living in Russia, different European countries started various actions against Armenians in that cities in order to avenge their killed compatriots. Firstly, they were stomping on Armenian apricots, then banned the sale of the apricot in the trade centers owned by them, then attacked the Armenian women during the protest, set on fire the vehicle of the Armenian embassy, broke the cars, stores of Armenians, attacked and beat an Armenian man.

The Azerbaijani actions didn’t go unanswered: our compatriots, of course, had to defend themselves”, she said, adding that now not only the life of soldiers is under danger, but also the life of Armenians and Azerbaijanis living in Moscow, Brussels, Los Angeles, etc.

“I urge the Azerbaijani women and mothers to be more courageous and join the Women For Peace campaign.

As violence brings new violence”, Anna Hakobyan said.

YEREVAN, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan gave an interview on July 25 to the Russian RBK TV, touching upon the recent attacks of Azerbaijanis against Armenians in Russia.

Commenting on the Azerbaijani attacks on Armenians in Moscow, the Armenian PM said they are not only the _expression_ of the anti-Armenian rhetoric of the Azerbaijani leadership, but also an attempt to destabilize Russia and make it a stage of ethnic clashes.

“There is no doubt that the Russian authorities have all means and capacities for not allowing such development of incidents.

But our compatriots in Russia in their turn should record that they should not be given in to provocations, and only those third forces, which have anti-Armenian aspirations in South Caucasus, are interested in destabilizing Russia. We will not allow this”, the PM said on Facebook.

He informed that his interview will air early next week.
