Armenia’s political authorities, current NSS director have issues with understanding the law: Artur Vanetsyan

Former director of the National Security Service, leader of Homeland party Artur Vanetsyan said outside the NSS building today where he was summoned for interrogation in the sidelines of a criminal case that the accusations voiced in his address were not confirmed.

Speaking about the essence of the case, Vanetsyan said that in 2018 one of the ex-employees was restored in his position which, according to the NSS’ interpretation he had no right to.

“But I guess they have some issues with the interpretation and understanding of the law, I mean not the NSS officials and investigators but Armenia’s political leadership and today’s director of the NSS. Because if they had read it till the end, they would have understood that there was no violation of the law,” he said.

Former director of the National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan did not exclude meetings with former presidents of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, Serzh Sargsyan and Levon Ter-Petrosyan in the near future.

“Political processes envisage meetings with all the political forces,” he said.

In response to Aysor.am’s question whether the people will manage to consolidate over the opposition and for the second time change the authorities by closing the streets, like second president Robert Kocharyan said in the interview, Vanetsyan said, “Definitely. I am sure in near future very active political processes will take place, and we will see the developments.”

Vanetsyan stressed that the country is in very complicated, bad condition.

“The authorities have failed the work in all the sectors. We are facing healthcare, economic crises. Instead of working the authorities are dealing with silencing the political opponents,” Vanetsyan said.

U.S. State Department urges Azerbaijan to avoid using the pandemic to silence opposition voices

The U.S. State Department urged Azerbaijan on July 20 to avoid using the pandemic to silence “civil society advocacy. The statement came in the Fact Sheet released by the State Department assessing the Human Rights in the Global Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

“The US State Department has urged authorities to ensure that actions taken in response to COVID-19 are not used to silence civil society advocacy, opposition voices, or public discussion.  Azerbaijani authorities have harassed and arrested — and in one case institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital — opposition members and others who have criticized the government,” the statement said.

The new office of Homeland party and Development Foundation was inaugurated in Artashat town on Friday. The Head of the Party Artur Vanetsyan cut the red ribbon, after which a meeting with supporters and party members was held.

Vanetsyan delivered remarks during the meeting, noting that over the short period of time the Foundation has delivered efficient results through financing different projects and initiatives that brought tangible results.

Reflecting on the ongoing situation in Armenia, Vanetsyan pointed out to the grave situation in the county, insisting the authorities have failed in all directions due to the lack of effective governance.

“I can state that due to gross failings people die every day. The news about new deaths has become a daily routine for the public which is a consequence of the mistakes by the authorities and their lack of understanding of the seriousness of the situation,” Vanetsyan stressed, adding more negative consequences will come up in the economic sphere.

“We may face an economic collapse soon and a serious downfall that would have implications on the social condition of each of us. Our party has always emphasized that a citizen in Armenia should live well, yet we see a serous decline because of the incompetent and incapable leadership,” Vanetsyan aid.

Speaking of the recent escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijan border, Vanetsyan pointed to the professionalism and courage of the Armenian Armed Forces. “Glory to the RA Armed Forces that were able to prevent the unbridled provocations of the adversary on the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border,” said the Leader of Homeland party.

Armenian-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission to resume works after a long break

The joint Armenian-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation resumes activities after a long break. The agreement was reached on July 30 during the meeting of the Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Marina Lazebna and the RA Ambassador to Ukraine Tigran Seyranyan.

As the Ukraine’s Ministry of Social Policy reported in a release, the interlocutors agreed to activate the cooperation in spheres of bilateral interest and outlined the upcoming activities.
