Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry shows satellite images of new illegal settlement in occupied Kalbajar (PHOTOS)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug.15

Trend:

Armenia continues its illegal activities in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, including the policy of illegal settlement, Trend reports on August 15 referring to the joint statement of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and Azerspace OJSC.

According to the statement, as a result of monitoring carried out by means of the Azersky satellite of Azercosmos company, the fact of illegal settlement in the occupied Kalbajar district of Azerbaijan was revealed.

The settlement, construction of which began in the late 2019, currently consists of 15 houses. The speed and construction progress give grounds to say that the settlement will expand. So, back in January 2020, 6 houses were here, in March – 10, and in April – 14 houses.

“Within the framework of Armenian policy of artificial settlement in the occupied territories, illegal construction activities have been carried out in recent years, including construction of the “Arajamukh” residential complex in Jabrayil, “Ariavan” in Lachin, houses in residential settlements in Zangilan and in the village of Khanlig, Gubadli district,” the statement reads.

As the statement notes, the received satellite images show that the Armenia continues the illegal settlement on the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, which is contrary to international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols, as well as human right norms.

According to the statement, this illegal activity is aimed at prolonging and consolidating the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh [region] and the adjacent districts of Azerbaijan, is aimed at the annexation of these territories and is aimed at the prevention of the return of Azerbaijani IDPs to their native lands.

Armenia, carrying out illegal activities in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent districts of Azerbaijan in violation of both international law and the legislation of Azerbaijan, as well as Armenian individuals and legal entities, other persons and companies involved in illegal activities in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, bear administrative and legal responsibility, the statement further points out.

The right of the Azerbaijani residents of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent districts of Azerbaijan to return to their homes will be ensured, and the aggressor-Armenia will be held accountable for all its illegal actions, the statement says.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Turkish press: Turkey will continue to support Azerbaijan, Presidential Spokesperson Kalın says

Turkey will always continue to support Azerbaijan as it has in the past, Turkey’s Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalın said late Friday.

Kalın appeared on Azerbaijan state television via the internet on a program in which Turkey-Azerbaijan relations were discussed.

“Our alliance against all types of enemy, our common steps against all sorts of friends will continue,” he said.

On the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, Kalın said if Azerbaijan suffered any attack, Turkey would continue to do everything in its power to support it.

On international efforts to resolve the crisis, he said the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, co-chaired by France, Russia and the U.S., had not produced the desired results and had failed to ensure the liberation of Karabakh from Armenian occupation.

Asked why such efforts had proved inadequate, Kalın said there were countries that sought to take advantage of the occupation by sustaining the problem.

“Is it a problem of neutrality or a strategic perspective? Everyone knows that Nagorno-Karabakh is under Armenian occupation. The solution is obvious. Why not take this road, why not enough pressure on Armenia?” he asked.

He said Turkey supported peaceful solutions in line with Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, adding that the occupation of Armenia must come to an end to allow for peace and stability in the Caucasus.

Asked about Turkey’s approach to Armenia, Kalın said if the crisis between Azerbaijan and Armenia was resolved, normalization with Armenia may be pursued, stressing that until then, Turkey would not accept agreements deemed unacceptable by Azerbaijan.

He also said the strong ties between Turkey and Azerbaijan that rest on economic, cultural, security and energy relations would continue to develop.

Armenian armed forces killed a dozen Azerbaijani soldiers in an attack launched in July. However, the country later withdrew after suffering losses following retaliation from the Azerbaijani military.

Since 1991, the Armenian military has illegally occupied the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is internationally recognized as territory belonging to Azerbaijan.

Four U.N. Security Council and two U.N. General Assembly resolutions, as well as a number of decisions by international organizations, refer to the illegal occupation and demand the withdrawal of Armenian forces from the region, as well as seven other occupied areas of Azerbaijan.

Turkey will always continue to support Azerbaijan as it has in the past, Turkey’s presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said late Friday.

Kalin appeared on a television program on Azerbaijan state television via the internet to evaluate Turkey-Azerbaijan relations.

“Our alliance against all kinds of enemies, our common steps against all kinds of friends will continue,” he said.

On the Upper Karabakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) issue, Kalin said if Azerbaijan suffered any attacks, Turkey would continue to support Azerbaijan in its power.

On international efforts to resolve the crisis in the region, he said the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, co-chaired by France, Russia, and the US, has not produced desired results and does not contribute to the liberation of Karabakh from Armenian occupation.

Asked why efforts are inadequate, Kalin said there are countries that want to take advantage of the crisis and occupation by sustaining the problem.

“Is there a problem of neutrality or a strategic perspective? Everyone knows that Nagorno-Karabakh is under Armenian occupation. The solution is obvious. Why not take this road, why not enough pressure on Armenia,” he said.

He said Turkey supports peaceful solutions in the framework of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

The occupation of Armenia must end for the establishment of peace and stability in the Caucasus, he added.

Asked about the approach of Turkey to Armenia, Kalin said if the crisis between Azerbaijan and Armenia is resolved, normalization with Armenia may be pursued.

Until then, Turkey will not accept plans or agreements that Azerbaijan would not accept, he stressed.

He also said strong ties between Turkey and Azerbaijan, including, economic, cultural, security and energy would continue to develop.

In July, attacks by the Armenian martyred a dozen Azerbaijani soldiers. However, they have since withdrawn after suffering losses following retaliation from the Azerbaijani military.

Since 1991, the Armenian military has illegally occupied the Upper Karabakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) region, an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan.

Four UN Security Council and two UN General Assembly resolutions, as well as decisions by international organizations, refer to the illegal occupation and demand the withdrawal of Armenian forces from Upper Karabakh and seven other occupied regions of Azerbaijan.

Today, the people had closed off the interstate road at Engels district of Alaverdi town. Aren Mkrtchyan, a member of the majority My Step faction of the National Assembly of Armenia, noted about this in a Facebook post.

“The citizens wanted to know a timeframe for the asphalting of the M6 interstate road’s Alaverdi section, which is under repair. The other requirement was the regular operation of the water trucks, as rising dust [from the repair] causes inconvenience to residents.

After talking to Minister [of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure] Suren Papikyan, I met with the citizens in Engels district. Regarding the asphalting, I have noted a clear timeframe; an appropriate instruction will be given for intensive work of the water trucks.

The interstate road is open,” Mkrtchyan added.
