TEHRAN, AUGUST 20, ARMENPRESS. Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) representatives will convene an economic forum at the Iranian Aras FEZ, the free economic zone at the border with Armenia.

Earlier, Aras FEZ executive Mohsen Nariman had said that they are cooperating with the Iranian foreign ministry for inviting EEU member representatives. Nariman told Iranian foreign ministry adviser for diplomatic and economic affairs Gholamreza Ansari that they decided to organize the forum to “develop trade-economic ties and opportunities with Eurasian and Caucasian countries”.

Stressing that Armenia is the only EEU member which has a land border with Iran, Ansari said: “This is a very important circumstance, we must take this opportunity, and the Iran-Armenia road – as a transit road to the EEU, which is of great importance for us – must be presented to everyone.”

“It is necessary to use all existing and potential opportunities of the Aras zone, as the only gateway to the CIS and EEU. The trade ties and turnover of Aras with these countries must be increased with prioritizing the exports of non-oil products,” Ansari added, highlighting the importance of cooperation of the Aras FEZ with EEU countries.

Armenia Ambassador on sale of Israeli weapons to Azerbaijan

In an interview with Israel’s ITON.TV, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Israel Armen Smbatyan answered TV host Alexandr Valdman’s questions regarding the recent interview that Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan gave to Jerusalem Post.

Stating that Israel supplies arms to Azerbaijan due to a $5,000,000,000 agreement signed in 2016, Valdman asked why Armenia’s foreign minister doesn’t address such issues to Russia, which also supplies arms to Azerbaijan and much more than Israel.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia meant that weapons shouldn’t be used to destroy peaceful civilians. Everyone knows this. This is exactly what he meant. In regard to Russia, Armenia is a part of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Eurasian Economic Union, has bilateral agreements, and the two countries have been developing their relations in all directions for decades, including in the military industry sector. Yes, Armenia understands how it interacts with Russia, what Russia is doing, why it is doing it, and we understand each other,” Smbatyan said.

“You say Azerbaijan uses Israeli weapons to annihilate peaceful civilians. What are the standards that help determine which weapon is against peaceful civilians and which is against the army?” the reporter asked.

The Ambassador stated that he hasn’t stated such a thing. “I said the weapons were used against peaceful civilians. There are facts. It’s hard to follow this since the global market is a free market, and all countries can purchase weapons. In this case, we need to understand and understand that the market is free. A country has the right to purchase weapons. However, deaths of people and peaceful civilians are another story. This is what the foreign minister said. He had to talk about that.”

Turkish Press: US expert challenges Armenian documents on 1915 events

Turkiye Newspaper, Turkey
Aug 20 2020

Armenian claims discussed more because Christian Armenians gained more sympathy in Christian West, says academic

An academic in the US argued on Thursday that there is “no document proving that the killing of Armenians was an official policy” of the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

Speaking at Turkish-American Security Foundation (TASFO), Michael Gunter of Tennessee Tech University explained that well-known documents published by Armenian author Aram Andonian in 1919 to supposedly prove deliberate massacres, were fabrications.

Having conducted research on the events of 1915, Gunter said Armenian claims had a greater audience because Christian Armenians had gained more sympathy in the Christian West.

“Also, Muslim Turks were historical enemies of the West. Since Armenians also spoke Western languages better than Turks, they were able to convey their messages to the West better,” explained Gunter, a professor of sociology and political science.

Emphasizing that he hoped an academic dialogue would be initiated between the advocates of Turkish and Armenian theses in the US, Gunter pointed out that Turkish-Americans would be willing to do so, but Armenian-Americans had never accepted such an endeavor.

He stressed that many Armenians in the western parts of the Ottoman Empire had not been deported, adding that some Armenians had been killing innocent Muslims for decades without interruption.

“For genocide to exist legally in international law, planning or premeditation must be proven, and it has not been proven on this issue,” he said.

Turkish stance on the 1915 events

Turkey’s position on the events of 1915 is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia took place when some of them sided with the invading Russians and revolted against the Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.

Turkey objects to the presentation of these incidents as “genocide”, describing them as a tragedy in which both sides suffered casualties.

Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia as well as international experts to tackle the issue.
