YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian expresses solidarity with the victims of the gas explosion in one of Yerevan buildings,

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the President’s Office, Sarkissian extended deep condolences to the family of Artur Ghazaryan, who died as a result of the explosion and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

President Sarkissian expressed confidence that the consequences of the incident will be eliminated as soon as possible with the efforts of the city authorities and the Government.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS. Economic activity index of Armenia increased by 9.7% in July compared with June, ARNENPRESS was informed from the data released by the Statistical Committee of Armenia. Moreover, almost all economic branches recorded growth in July.

Industrial output rose by 1.4% in July against June, construction rose by 10.8%, trade turnover by 11.7%, services by 0.9%, foreign trade by 2.4%, where export rose by 1.5% and import rose by 2.9%.

Average monthly salary increased by 5.4% in July against June.

Electricity production rose by 16.2%, while the consumer price index decreased by 2.1%.

But the economic indexes for January-July show that economic activity index in Armenia declined by 5.7% against the same period of 2019. All the countries of the world record economic decline as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan convened a consultation on August 26 to discuss the interim report of the activities of the Armenian National Interests Fund (ANIF).

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Chief Executive Officer of ANIF David Papazian presented the potential investment programs discussed in the sidelines of public-private cooperation.

In the sidelines of the anti-crisis measures of the Government, the goals and toolkits of ANIF were discussed.

Nikol Pashinyan noted that ANIF is an important tool for the anti-crisis policy and tasked to continue works in the direction of investment programs.

Defense Minister Tonoyan condemns footage released by Azerbaijan in a conversation with Kasprzyk

YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS. Defense Minister of Armenia Davit Tonoyan held a telephone conversation with Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk, ARMENPRESS reports MoD spokesperson Shushan Stepanyan wrote on her Facebook page.

Shushanyan noted that during the conversation the Defense Minister drew the attention of Ambassador Kasprzyk on the two footages released by the Azerbaijani media outlets today and earlier with the participation of Armenian officer Gurgen Alaverdyan. Tonoyan emphasized that the footages are a gross violation of international laws, including humanitarian law.

‘’The Geneva Conventions guarantee the protection of the rights of war prisoners, respect for their honor and dignity, which must preclude any form of degrading treatment, regardless of the circumstances in which the person is placed under the jurisdiction of the other party. Serviceman Gurgen Alaverdyan is obviously forced to read the text in imperfect Armenian’’, Stepanyan wrote.

Gurgen Alaverdyan appeared in the Azerbaijani territory on August 24. The Defense Ministry of Armenia announced that according to preliminary data, he has been disoriented due to bad weather conditions.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS. TUMO center opened in the Russian capital, Moscow on August 26, ARMENPRESS was informed from the TUMO center for creative technologies.

‘Following Paris and Beirut, now the youngsters of Moscow will be able to get acquainted with the TUMO program, use the newest technologies and gain skills in a number of modern spheres.

Thanks to the cooperation between TUMO and Genome Ventures the TUMO members of Moscow will be able to specialize in 8 spheres in the initial stage – programming, graphic design, robotics, 3D modeling, game creation, music, filmmaking and animation.In the future 6 more directions will be available – Website creation, drawing, photography, new media, mobile graphics and arts.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin attended the opening of the center. ‘’Technological education is very demanded and popular in Moscow. I am confident there will be huge aspiration for studying here’’, he said.

TUMO center is located in the center of Moscow, next to ‘’Moscow City’’ business center. It has its own building and is designed for 2 thousand students. Classes will start from October.

2 more international TUMO centers will open until the end of the year – in Berlin and Tirana.

Survivors of deadly domestic violence incident in Armenian town to be taken to children’s care home

YEREVAN, AUGUST 27, ARMENPRESS. A 4-year-old child who was among the seven children to be severely beaten in a shocking domestic violence incident in the village of Khashtarak of Tavush province has recovered from the sustained injuries and will discharged from a Yerevan hospital.

The Surb Astvatsamayr Medical Center said the 6 children will be transferred to a children’s care home, according to preliminary information. 5 of the children were hospitalized with acute exogenous poisoning. The other two had severe traumas.

One of the 7 victims, a six year-old child, had died earlier from multiple traumas.

A 28-year-old woman from the village of Khashtarak, Tavush was arrested last week on suspicion of severely beating her five children. The woman’s father, 57, was also detained and charged. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the woman has also regularly battered her two nephews. The 7 children have been recognized as victims in the criminal case.

The incident prompted a reaction from the government, with Tavush Governor Hayk Chobanyan convening an emergency meeting.

Later, the Pashinyan Administration called for heightened and stronger measures to prevent domestic violence incidents.

COVID-19: Armenia reports 203 new cases, 262 recoveries in one day

YEREVAN, AUGUST 27, ARMENPRESS. 203 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in Armenia in the past one day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 43,270, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention said today.

262 more patients have recovered in one day. The total number of recoveries has reached 36,988.

1938 tests were conducted in the past one day.

3 more patients have died, raising the death toll to 864.

The number of people who had a coronavirus but died from other diseases has reached 265 (1 new such case).

The number of active cases is 5153.

In historic move, Armenia to build entirely new village

YEREVAN, AUGUST 27, ARMENPRESS. The Cabinet approved the action plan on building a new village for the reconstruction of the unfinished Kaps Reservoir in Shirak Province. The village will be provided for the resettlement of residents whose homes are situated in areas which will be part of the reservoir.

The Kaps Reservoir is located in the Akhuryan flood-plain 22km north of the city of Gyumri. The first phase of construction involves building the reservoir with a capacity of 25,000,000 cubic meters, with possibility of further expansion up to 60,000,000 cubic meters.

“This will be the first time in the history of the Third Republic of Armenia when we are building a new village from scratch,” PM Nikol Pashinyan said, adding that the initiative is also significant in terms of specifying perceptions regarding a modern-day Armenian village.

The reservoir’s territory will comprise parts of the Aregnadem, Gtashen, Byurakn, Kaps and Jradzor villages.
