“I’ve taken my step, now take your step.” Avalanche Ent. has released an official trailer for a documentary titled I Am Not Alone, which originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. It also played at Doc NYC and AFI Fest in the fall. The doc film is about the Armenian revolution of 2018. The movement begins hopelessly, with activist Nikol Pashinyan and just a handful of supporters — including a stray dog — setting out on a 14-day march from one side of the country to the capital of Yerevan. Step by step, the marchers begin to capture the hearts and minds of the Armenian public. Within a few weeks, the country erupts in a spectacular revolution, as millions of citizens take to the streets, across their neighborhoods, and stage some of the most creative, powerful, and surprising acts of civil disobedience in modern history. This incredible political drama presents an emotional & inspiring roadmap for how a true democratic movement can achieve profound change against all odds. Finally some real optimism and hope for a better tomorrow.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Garin Hovannisian’s doc I Am Not Alone, direct from YouTube:

On Easter 2018, a man put on a backpack and went live on Facebook to announce that he was beginning a walk across Armenia. His mission: to inspire a velvet revolution — and topple the corrupt regime that enjoys absolute power in his post-soviet nation. With total access to all key players, I Am Not Alone tells the miraculous true story of what happens in the next 40 days. Hovannisian’s gripping documentary deftly follows the efforts led by journalist, politician, and activist Nikol Pashinyan to prevent the election of the country’s president, Serzh Sargsyan, as the new prime minister — a move that would essentially put Sargsyan in control of Armenia for life, making him a de facto dictator. I Am Not Alone is directed by Armenian filmmaker Garin Hovannisian, director of the feature film 1915 previously, as well as Truth to Power and TV mini-series “The Moment”. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Avalanche Ent. will debut I Am Not Alone in select US theaters on April 10th. For details, head to the .

By taking us straight to the construction site, showing us the village life in Chinari, a town in Tavush province in Armenia,  or even lifting the red curtains of the theatre stage, 4Plus, an Armenian photo-story media platform, allows the viewer to merge themself and live through different stories. All of these small stories, in turn, provide a deeper glance into the wider issues of labor rights, minority rights, and women’s issues.

In 2012, when Armenian  photojournalists Nazik Armenakyan, Anahit Hayrapetyan and Anush Bababjanyan launched 4Plus, there were very few platforms where their work could be displayed. This prompted them to create this space which would embrace the photo-stories format and serve as an alternative to conventional news media. Until today, 4Plus remains a pioneer in the field of documentary story-telling in Armenia.

With the goal of empowering women and minority groups whose rights are being violated, 4Plusis committed to documenting social issues and violations of human rights.

“A story can be recounted in countless ways, however our approach is to concentrate on the individual,” notes Piruza Khalapyan, one of the board members of the platform.

Instead of showing disheartening statistics or overwhelming the reader with details, 4Plus presents issues through personal stories.

“We photograph stories about social themes that people overlook,” elaborates Nazik,  “Everyone and everything deserves to be photographed.”

The team is not afraid to publish about provocative and controversial topics that have been visually underrepresented in the mainstream Armenia media. Although some of these topics are not easily accepted by the audience, and the response is not always positive, Nazik explains.

However,  their work nonetheless contributes to the creation of a discourse on these topics. “At least people start to talk about them.”

A big focus of the website is women and their role in society. The project “Persona” combines six different stories, each of which focuses on one woman, her daily life and the issues she confronts.

“It also helps to shift the audience perceptions about these women,” mentions Nazik.

4Plus also released a short film called “An Armenian Must,” which grapples with questions about Armenian identity, specifically focusing on Armenian youth who live in Georgia. The film explores how Georgian-Armenians identify themselves as Armenian and what were the societal “musts” they believed they should adhere to.

The team admits that editing and photographing all these stories can be arduous. In each story, the photographer spends weeks shooting, then revisiting and reshooting.

“We discuss the stories with our team meticulously, making sure that every picture has an emotional aspect to it and is powerful enough to tell a story,” explains Piruza.

4Plus also organizes workshops on documentary photography in different regions of Armenia, including Vanadzor, Gyumri, Kapan and Stepanakert. As Piruza mentions, many of the young photographers are interested but do not have the skills of a documentary photographer or filmmaker. There are not many institutions in Armenia that teach and train on those subjects.

“One of our future plans is to open a photography school, where Armenian youth can get a quality education,” says Nazik.

Both Nazik and Piruza graduated from the Caucasus Institute’s program on Documentary photography organized by WordPress in Armenia, and they explain that the education they got there is missing in Armenia.

“I always say that photography is about communication,” says Nazik, “We want to teach our youth that what is important is their ability to listen to people, to become intimate with them and only in the end, to take a picture.”

This principle is clear in their work, as all of their photo-stories demonstrate a deep connection with the people they present. By viewing these individuals more personally, and showing a fuller picture of their life and not just the very darkest aspects, a deeper understanding of the social issues can be attained and the themes that 4Plus explores can be better unraveled and presented to the general public.

ANKARA

An Azerbaijani soldier was martyred in an attack by Armenian forces that targeted a border village in Qazakh province, local authorities said Thursday.

Orkhan Pashazade was wounded in a sniper attack and was taken to a provincial hospital, but died due to his injuries, said Azerbaijan’s State Border Service.

The attack at 7.10 p.m. local time (1510GMT) at the line of contact “roughly violated” a cease-fire between the two countries, authorities added.

The Armenian “military-political leadership” is responsible for this crime, it added.

Upper Karabakh is the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan illegally occupied by Armenia through military aggression since 1991.

Four UN Security Council resolutions and two by the General Assembly, as well as decisions by many other international organizations, refer to the occupation and demand the withdrawal of the occupational Armenian forces from Upper Karabakh and seven other occupied regions of Azerbaijan.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Minsk group — co-chaired by France, Russia and the U.S. — was formed to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, but has not reached any results.

Armenia in the “green zone” for epidemic prevention

JAM News

Armenia received a score of 90 points on a site which determines how prepared countries are to combat an epidemic. The current situation involves the coronavirus

Armenia received a high score of 90 points in epidemic prevention, putting the country in the “green” (safe) zone. This information comes from a report published by international experts on preventepidemics.org. The site determines the world readiness index for countering epidemics using the Joint External Assessment (JEE) scale, which has approved by the World Health Organization.

So far, only one case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Armenia. The infected man arrived in the country from Iran on March 1st. The border between Armenia and Iran has been closed since Febuary 23rd. The 29-year-old Armenian citizen arrived on one of the special flights allowing Armenian and Iranian citizens to return to their home countries. All people who came in contact with him are in quarantine and feel fine, as does the infected man himself. He is not receiving treatment, as he is showing no signs of illness.

How Armenia’s dealing with coronavirus

The report on preventepidemics.org states:

“[Armenia has] functioning systems to find, stop and prevent health threats, but they must work to maintain this level of protection for their people.».

Armenia is included in the list of those countries that have a high level of protection and therefore are marked in green on the interactive site map.

It also says that Armenia’s strengths in preventing epidemics are coordination, communication, advocacy and food safety.

Meanwhile, the country continues to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus, in particular, in the country’s armed forces. Now, before permitting family members to visit soldiers receiving treatment in military hospitals, their temperature is measured and they are supplied with medical masks.

Routine medical care in military hospitals is also being limited.

Classes are likely to resume in Armenian schools and universities on March 9. This was announced on March 5 by the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Araik Harutyunyan:

“We have no special instructions to stop conducting classes. If this continues to be the case, then they will resume on Monday.”

A week-long quarantine which prevented educational institutions from holding classes began on the second of March. Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan will decide whether it should be extended.

He says that sanitary and medical measures to combat the virus were fairly well-organized, and that new cases are being reported much less frequently.

The situation remains tense in South Korea, Iran and Italy, but Torosyan says that in Georgia and Russia, things are relatively calm.

“I am in constant contact with my colleagues in these countries, and I think that after the peak in the incidence rate, we will see the frequency of reported cases fall. After that, we will be able to review the forced restrictions on movement.”

YEREVAN, MARCH 5, ARMENPRESS. The U.S. death toll from coronavirus infections rose to 11 on Wednesday as new cases emerged around New York City and Los Angeles, reports Reuters.

The first California death from the virus was an elderly person in Placer County, near Sacramento, health officials said. The person had underlying health problems and likely had been exposed on a cruise ship voyage between San Francisco and Mexico last month.

It was the first coronavirus fatality in the United States outside of Washington state, where 10 people have died in a cluster of at least 39 infections that have emerged through community transmission of the virus in two Seattle-area counties.

Hours after the person’s death was announced, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency in response to the coronavirus, which he said has resulted in 53 cases across the nation’s most populous state.

Six new coronavirus patients were confirmed in Los Angeles County, public health officials said.
