What: The Zeytun Gospels "Missing Pages: The Modern Life of a
Medieval Manuscript from Genocide to Justice"
a lecture is given by Prof. Heghnar Zeitlian
When: Feb 24 2019 1pm
Following Church Divine Liturgy which starts at 10:30am
Where: Armenian Apostolic Church of Crescenta Valley
Western Prelacy's Hall, 6252 Honolulu Ave., La Crescenta, CA
Misc: In 2010, the world's wealthiest art institution, the J. Paul
Getty Museum, found itself confronted by a century-old
genocide. The Armenian Church was suing for the return of
eight pages from the Zeytun Gospels, a manuscript illuminated
by the greatest medieval Armenian artist, Toros Roslin.
The Missing Pages is the biography of a manuscript that is at
once art, sacred object, and cultural heritage. Its tale
mirrors the story of its scattered community as Armenians have
struggled to redefine themselves after genocide and in the
absence of a homeland. Heghnar Zeitlian Watenpaugh follows in
the manuscript's footsteps through seven centuries, from
medieval Armenia to the killing fields of 1915 Anatolia, the
refugee camps of Aleppo, Ellis Island, and Soviet Armenia, and
ultimately to a Los Angeles courtroom.
Heghnar Zeitlian Watenpaugh is Professor of Art History at the
University of California, Davis. She is the award-winning
author of The Image of an Ottoman City: Architecture in Aleppo
(2004). Her writing has also appeared in the Huffington Post
and the Los Angeles Times. As a board member of the US
nonprofit Project 2015, she helped organize the historic
Armenian Genocide Centennial Commemorations in Istanbul where

Ends on Feb 27
Where: Kulturzentrum Pavillon Hannover, Lister Meile 4, 30161

become stateless and live outside their homelands, but they
shared another destiny: in the twentieth century, collective
destruction threatened them in the shadow of two world
wars. The European Center for Jewish Music (EZJM) and the
German-Armenian Society (DAG) are using this convergence as the
starting point for a collaborative conference that will focus
on Jewish and Armenian historical experiences through
scientific lectures and a cultural program.
The speakers (amongst others Richard Hovannisian, Michael
C. Stone, Harutyun Marutyan, Dan Diner, Emil Sanamyan, mit Kurt)
represent a variety of disciplines such as theology,
literature, musicology, history, sociology, political science
and cultural studies. The themes of the conference - Diaspora,
Minority Issues, Genocide, Memory and Reception, and Relations
between Jews and Armenians Today - reflect the common dimension
of Armenian and Jewish conditions.
An extensive accompanying program consisting of readings, a
theater performance, concerts, workshops and a panel discussion
aims to familiarize a broader public with the subject. The
concluding podium discussion will discuss the very different
politics of remembrance in dealing with the Holocaust and the
genocide against the Armenians in Germany.
Jointly organized by The` European Center for Jewish Music an

Armenia may purchase up to 16 Su-30SM fighters from Russia – Defense Ministry
Armenia may purchase up to 16 Su-30SM fighters from Russia – Defense Ministry
YEREVAN. Feb 19
The Armenian Defense Ministry has not ruled out the possibility of purchasing 16 Sukhoi Su-30SM multi-role fighter aircraft from Russia.
“I cannot name the exact figures. The defense minister also did not provide the exact figures, did not say that Armenia is intending to buy just 12 aircraft. That is a minimal amount we considering. It is a squadron. It could consist of ten, 12 or 16 aircraft. It’s difficult to name the exact figures, but we can’t rule anything out,” Armenian Defense Ministry spokesperson Artsrun Hovhannisyan told Radio Liberty’s Armenian-language service on Tuesday.
When asked whether the jet fighters are being purchased through the 100-million-dollar defense loan provided by Russia, Hovhannisyan replied that Armenia is purchasing military equipment using not only the loan.
“It would be wrong if I let it be known what equipment is being purchased with what funds. But, in general, military equipment is being purchased not only through the loan, but also at our expense,” the Armenian Defense Ministry spokesperson said.
Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan said earlier that Armenia does not plan on limiting itself to purchasing four Su-30SM multi-role jet fighters from Russia.
“We will not limit ourselves to four jet fighters,” Tonoyan told reporters on February 13.
“The four planes have yet to be delivered to Armenia, and they will be in due course,” he said.

On June 18, del Bosque, his long-time assistant Toni Grande, as well as conditioning coach of the Armenian national football team Javier Miñano will deliver a lecture for Armenian coaches.
Culture: Tumanyan’s bronze statue unveiled in his Tbilisi house
A bronze statue of Armenian poet and publicist Hovhannes Tumanyan was installed yesterday in the balcony of Tumanyan scientific and cultural center in Tbilisi. The gift was made by a Georgian MP Dato Chichinadze on the occasion of the 150th birthday anniversary of the great Armenian poet.
The cultural center after Hovhannes Tumanyan is located on Amagleba street, 18 (former Davitashvili St.) in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Tumanyan lived in the house from 1904 to 1923. In 1952 the writer’s personal belongings were taken to Yerevan. 4 rooms out of 6 where turned into a library. The rest belonged to heirs. After Georgia’s independence, the City Hall of Tbilisi has transferred the ownership of the part of the library to a Georgian citizen.
In a critical condition, that part later had was acquired again at the initiative of Levon Ananyan, the former chairman of the Writers’ Union of Armenia thanks to the financial support provided by then Mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan. After the acquisition of the building by the Diocese, Jinishian Memorial and IDeA Foundation along with the Armenian Church initiated the full renovation and furnishing of the building.
Tumanyan is usually regarded in Armenian circles as “All-Armenian poet”. Tumanyan wrote poems, quatrains, ballads, novels, fables, critical and journalistic articles. His work is simple, natural and poetically inspired at the same time. It is not by mere chance that dozens of phrases and expressions from Tumanyan’s works have become a natural part of people’s everyday language, their sayings, adages, and maxims.

Film/Music: New documentary about Tigran Mansurian to premiere in Yerevan in March
A new documentary about world famous Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian will premiere in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, on 5 March.
The 52-minute film titled “Maestro Mansurian” is dedicated to the renowned composer’s 80th birthday anniversary.
Speaking to Panorama.am, general producer of the film Hayk Ordyan says the film shootings launched five years ago, adding they have strived to complete the filming at least on the composer’s 80th birthday.
He says Hayk Mkrtchyan, the film director who worked in their film production company Ordfilm at the time, expressed a strong desire to make a film about the composer, and the producer supported his idea.
“We didn’t have great expectations, but as we went deeper, we realized it could become a much more serious film. When we started talking to the maestro frequently, he directed us,” Ordyan says.
He stressed “Maestro Mansurian” is the only film that presents the great composer’s creative activity abroad.
“The maestro’s activities outside Armenia remains undiscovered up to now. The film will give many answers; many of the prominent European and American music figures talk about it. The film has a great geography and serious materials which can serve as a basis for a larger project,” he said.
According to Ordyan, the cooperation with the talented composer was a success, adding Mansurian has a ‘gentle approach’ to any issue.
Tigran Mansurian has watched the full film and has positive impressions, although some corrections were made in the documentary after his watch.
“He has a great attitude towards the film. Naturally, we have made some technical changes [in the film] after he watched it. The maestro is looking forward to the film premiere,” the producer said.
After its Yerevan premiere, the German language version of “Maestro Mansurian” will be broadcast on a German TV.

Gurgen Margaryan’s murder in Budapest was Aliyev’s first message to the world: 15 years passed since Armenian officer’s death
Gurgen Margaryan’s murder in Budapest was Aliyev’s first message to the world: 15 years passed since Armenian officer’s death
14:56,
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 19, ARMENPRESS. The crime committed against Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest, in 2004, was Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s first message to the world what policy he is going to run and what are his plans, Marina Grigoryan – Ordinary Genocide project manager, told a press conference in ARMENPRESS.
“That crime proved that Aliyev’s plan was to make Armenophobia a state policy of Azerbaijan. All actions which took place shortly after this incident, such as the trial of Ramil Safarov who killed Margaryan with an axe, his extradition, as well as the ongoing actions show that Aliyev is consistently carrying out that policy”, she said.
Grigoryan said that crime has been organized at the state level and was Aliyev’s state order to Ramil Safarov. “This was proved in the first days when Safarov gave his first testimony.
“He said everything very frankly, and the other Azerbaijani participant Anar Aliyev has confirmed what he said. After the incident Safarov told his partner to go to Baku and state that he has done what he had to do. This exists in the official document, as well as in the materials of the judicial case”, she said.
Grigoryan said Azerbaijan is responsible for the murder of Gurgen Margaryan.
Lawyer Nazeli Vardanyan said the interference at the state level during that years, the opening of embassy in Hungary, the influence on expertise, releasing Safarov after extradition was a planned operation.
“It’s obvious that there is a state order here. When you examine Safarov’s activity, you see that he has been a prospective officer. He has graduated from a college in Baku, continued studies in Turkey, participated in the military drills in Northern Cyprus and was sent to Hungary to learn English”, she said.
15 years have passed since the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan, who was brutally killed by Azerbaijani criminal Ramil Safarov.
On January 11, 2004, Gurgen Margaryan left for Budapest, Hungary, to participate in a three-month English language course which was part of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program. On February 19 he was axed, while asleep, by his fellow Azerbaijani participant, Lieutenant Ramil Safarov. The murder took place at 5 am, while the victim was asleep.
Safarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was transferred back to his home country on August 31, 2012 under an extradition agreement. Although Azerbaijan formally pledged that the life sentence handed down to him in Hungary would be directly continued when he was returned to his homeland, the Azerbaijani president granted him a pardon and formally recognized him as a “national hero” upon his arrival.
