The Armenian Apostolic Church commemorates today150 Pontiffs participating in the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople. Qahana.am reports that during different periods of history the Ecumenical Church has faced various problems of doctrinal, administrative and organizational nature, solutions to which have been provided during the Ecumenical Councils. One of such councils was the Second Ecumenical Council convened upon the order of the King Theodosios in Constantinople, in 381.

As the result of Arian disputes a new heresy had appeared, the head and supporter of which was Bishop Makedon of Constantinople, who denied the deity of the Holy Spirit. The Ecumenical Council convened in Constantinople on that special occasion, re-endorsed the definition of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea and stack for the formulation “One deity, three persons”.

Accepting the Ecumenical Council, the Armenian Apostolic Church commemorates the memory of 150 Patriarchs participating in the Council.

Trend:

An event dedicated to the 27th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide was held in the US Congress, Trend reports referring to the Azerbaijani embassy in the US on March 1.

The members and staff of the Congress, representatives of Azerbaijani community and other communities in the US, as well as a witness of the Khojaly tragedy Anar Usubov attended the event.

Azerbaijani ambassador Elin Suleymanov told the participants of the event about the Khojaly tragedy, stressing that this is a genocide committed against the Azerbaijanis.

Anar Usubov, a resident of Khojaly, who presently lives in the US, shared memories of his hometown and childhood in Khojaly, as well as bitter memories associated with the tragedy in Khojaly.

The Khojaly genocide is a bloody page of the policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide being carried out by Armenian invaders against the Azerbaijani people for over 200 years.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

During the Karabakh war, on Feb. 25-26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces, together with the 366th infantry regiment of Soviet troops, stationed in Khankendi, committed an act of genocide against the population of the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly. As many as 613 people, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old people were killed in the massacre. Eight families were totally exterminated, 130 children lost one parent and 25 children lost both. Some 1,275 innocent residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 people still remains unknown.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Shaki Waterfall, Armenia

Atlas Obscura
March 2 2019

Shaki Waterfall is a beautiful spot, where cascades of water plunge 60 feet down over solidified basalt lava flows. The waterfall was enjoyed much like any other natural attraction until the 1990s, when someone built a small hydroelectric generator nearby and began diverting most of the water from upstream to generate electricity.

When visitors would come to witness the falls, they were disappointed to see the diminished flow as the picturesque falls were essentially turned “off.” And so a compromise was reached: For a fee, visitors could have all the water sent to the waterfall and enjoy the full effect once more. This agreement lasted for several years, but many folks were not happy to have to pay to see their old waterfall.

In 2017, the Armenian government decided that at least during tourist season, the waterfall should flow uninterrupted and free of charge for much of the day. They set regular opening hours, and now anyone can enjoy the full splendor of the falls—as long as you get there at the right time.

Know Before You Go

Visitors can freely enjoy the full beauty of this waterfall between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from May 1 to September 30, and between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from March 15 and April 30 and October 1 and November 15.

The Greek Teachers Association “Prometheus”, the Federation of Hellenic-American Educators & Cultural Associations of America and the Pan Pontian Federation of the United States and Canada held their First Symposium on Sunday, February 17th, in the Library of St. Demetrios School of the St. Demetrios Cathedral of Astoria. The Symposium celebrated the Three Hierarchs Greek Letters Day, the World Day of Greek Language and commemoration of the 100 Year Anniversary of the Pontian and Asia Minor Genocide.

The Keynote speaker, Dr. Panos Stavrianidis spoke on “The Hellenic Genocide of Asia Minor.” Professor Stavrianidis described the contribution of the Fathers of Greek Letters, the Three Hierarchs, who came from the Greek Christian Centers of Asia Minor. “The elimination of all Greek communities in Asia Minor and the Pontus (Black Sea coast) from 1915-1923 was the greatest catastrophe after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453,” he explained. “The genocide was instigated by the national movement of Kemal Ataturk, backed by the Germans, who eliminated the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek population through massacres, forced deportations involving death marches, execution and destruction of the Eastern Orthodox cultural, historical and religious monuments.” Demetris Molohides, President of the Pan-Pontian Federation of America & Canada, added “the Greek genocide began in 1913 with Thrace persecution. No one objected. Turkish aggression has continued during the past 100 years. Genocides must be written in History books. Consul General of Cyprus Alexis Phedonos-Vadet remarked: “that better days are coming to Cyprus.” Dr. John Nathenas displayed and discussed a copy of the “Panagia Sumela” miraculous icon from the Sumela Monastery in the Pontus.

Azerbaijani press: FM: Armenia continues policy aimed at solidifying results of its aggression against Azerbaijan

1 March 2019 22:41 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 1

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Azerbaijan calls upon all Members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to practically support the activities of the group to operationalize the OIC decisions and resolutions on Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and facilitate appropriate actions to compel Armenia to comply with the relevant OIC documents, Trend reports citing Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

He made the remarks during the 46th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC in Abu-Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

“Over five decades since its establishment, the OIC as the unique multilateral body of the Muslim world, has become a strategic dialogue partner to the international community in the maintenance of global peace and security. Yet today our organization is facing the unprecedented challenges both internal and external – which constitute existential threats to the Members’ unity, integrity and sovereignty.

The continuous armed conflicts and terrorist attacks in our geography notably in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan, as well as rising trend of intolerance, racism and xenophobia in various parts of the world demonstrate the deficiency of current international mechanisms aimed to guaranty international peace and security. Therefore our joint actions aimed at peaceful and brotherly resolutions of conflicts within our geography and firm stand in fighting terrorism, preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all Members, countering Islamophobia are of utmost priority. In this regard Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the reform process in the OIC aimed at increasing the overall efficiency of the Organization, in particular strengthening its mediation capacity to address the conflicts.
The Republic of Azerbaijan being adherent to the collective approach and joint strategy of the Organization will continue to work with the Member States towards peaceful resolution of the conflicts, including through various OIC Contact Groups to which Azerbaijan is a member, notably on Palestine, Jammu and Kashmir, Somali and Muslim minorities in Europe. In this regard we call upon all Member States to spare no efforts in implementing the principles of collective approach and Islamic solidarity.

The Palestinian issue being at the heart of the OIC raison d’etre is the one which requires such collective approach. Azerbaijan reaffirms full solidarity and persistent support for the just and lasting solution to the issue and stands for the two-state solution of the Palestinian conflict with East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.

Being committed to this objective Azerbaijan congratulates Palestinian government for official assumption of the “Group of G77 and China” presidency, which would consolidate the political and legal status of Palestine in the international arena, and its well-deserved right to acquire full UN membership. Last year Azerbaijan hosted NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine within 18th Mid-term Ministerial Meeting of the Non Alignment Movement (NAM). The Final Baku Declaration reiterated urgent call for serious, collective efforts to bring a complete end to the violence in Palestine. In November of 2018, Azerbaijan hosted the Annual Meeting of Ambassadors of the State of Palestine accredited in Asia thus contributing to capacity building of Palestinian government. On humanitarian part of support for Palestinian people Azerbaijan allocated last October 200 000 dollars to UNRWA .
Let me assure this Organization that during our chairmanship in the NAM in the period of 2019-2022 Azerbaijan will spare no efforts to further contribute to the peace in Palestine as well as towards peace, security and development of the Islamic countries at large.

While doing its utmost to contribute to international peace and security Azerbaijan is still facing continuous military aggression by Armenia, which resulted in occupation of 20 percent of internationally recognized territory of my country, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions; in ethnic cleansing of almost 1 million Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs; in destruction and desecration of numerous historical, cultural and religious monuments in the territories of Azerbaijan still occupied by Armenia.

The mediation efforts by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe unfortunately have still not yielded results which should be liberation of the occupied lands and restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. This definitive result for negotiations is vested in the UN SC relevant resolutions as well as resolutions of the OIC, relevant documents of OSCE, European Union and almost any international organization ever dealt with the conflict.

Despite all of these calls, despite all our efforts to resolve the conflict by peaceful means Armenia continues its policy of predatory looting of the natural resources and destroying historic and Islamic legacy of the occupied territories aimed at solidifying the results of its aggression; violating the ceasefire, killing and wounding Azerbaijani servicemen and civilians almost on a daily basis. I appreciate just position of the OIC member-states with regard to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, reflected in the OIC Ministerial resolutions. I also call for reflection of the position of justice and solidarity expressed within this august body while dealing with the aggressor state on bilateral basis as well as at international fora. The attempts by Armenia to abuse international cultural, language-based or humanitarian fora with a view of promoting its policy of occupation and of breaching solidarity of this very organization should be met with our unified stance. Armenian attempts to engage some of the Member States into economic and cultural cooperation, organize touristic promotion of occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan or of so called preserved Islamic heritage in its own territory while destroying this very heritage is nothing else but cynical policy of legalizing the occupation and strengthening the occupier from which we strongly call upon the Member States to refrain from.

While commending the annual meetings of the OIC Contact Group on the Aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan held since 2016 in New-York and expressing in this regard our appreciation to its members and the OIC Secretary General we call upon all Members to practically support the activities of the group to operationalize the OIC decisions and resolutions on Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and facilitate appropriate actions to compel Armenia to comply with the relevant OIC documents.

Azerbaijan commends the work of the OIC institutions aimed at strengthening our solidarity and raising our collective voice in international arena. In this regard I would like to highlight ISESCO statement condemning construction by Armenia of a new canal from the Sarsang Reservoir in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories being in flagrant violation of the international law and aimed at creating environmental disaster for the adjacent regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

We appreciate the members solidarity demonstrated within the “Justice for Khojaly” international campaign carried out by the Islamic Conference Youth Forum and within implementation of the resolution on “The solidarity with the victims of the Khojaly massacre” aimed at raising global awareness on genocide of civilian Azerbaijanis by the Armenian forces in the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly in February 1992.

I would like also to underline importance of our solidarity in times of hardships and natural disasters such as OIC humanitarian support in the aftermath of Indonesian 2018 earthquake to which Azerbaijan was privileged to contribute.

Our solidarity needs to be demonstrated also in strengthening the much needed global inter-cultural dialogue and countering dangers of xenophobia, racism, hate speech and Islamophobia. In this regard I call upon Member states to actively participate in the 5th edition of the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue to be held in May 2019 in Baku, which constitutes a central part of the “Baku Process” initiated by the President of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev in 2008. The process supported by influential international partners such as OIC, UNESCO, UN Alliance of Civilizations, World Tourism Organization, Council of Europe and ISESCO is aimed at strengthening inter-cultural dialogue and mutual understanding as foundation for sustainable peace and inclusive development.

In 2018, Nakhchivan, an ancient Azerbaijan city, named capital of Islamic culture hosted various cultural programs further contributing to enriching our cultural ties. We are looking forward to host the first ever OIC Cultural Week this year in Azerbaijan and the Eighth International Contest of young performers of classical music from our countries which will support the young talents and creativity.
Azerbaijan supports the activities of the ICYF and its Eurasian Regional Centre hosted by the Government of Azerbaijan in Baku and during our tenure of chairmanship in the Ministerial Council on Youth and Sports we will continue practical contribution to youth and sports development. The 2nd Executive Model OIC games, Islamic countries young entrepreneurs’ network to be hosted within this tenure by Azerbaijan among various youth oriented programs are aimed at strengthening friendship between Islamic countries through youth and sports activities.

We also invite members to finalize the ratification process of the OIC specialized organ namely, The OIC Labour Center, initiated by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E Mr. Ilham Aliyev with the aim to support the productive force and economic growth of our countries, an important goal of the “OIC-2025 Programme of Action”.

I would like to conclude by reiterating my sincere congratulations to the OIC Members on the occasion of the 50th Jubilee once again and wish the next 50 years to be marked with our greater strength and solidarity to fruit with sustainable peace, stability and development for our Ummah,” said the foreign minister.

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijan urges OSCE MG to condemn provocative statements by Armenian leadership

1 March 2019 23:26 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 1

Trend:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reacted to the statements made by Artur Vanetsyan, director of the National Security Service of Armenia, Trend reports referring to the press service of the Foreign Ministry.

The Ministry noted that the fact that a high-ranking Armenian official spoke in this vein is a blatant attack against a years-long negotiating process under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, contrary to its essence and logic, especially in light of the results of the last meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers in Paris.

“In essence, what we have here is an audacious attempt to undermine the negotiation process and challenge the activities of the co-chairs. On the other hand, this statement is another clear evidence of Armenia’s direct involvement in the occupation of Azerbaijani lands and a desire to somehow “justify” its plans of annexing these lands, including via an illegal immigration policy, which fundamentally contradicts the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and the Additional Protocols to them.”

“In connection with this, we would like to remind the aggressor country that it is precisely Armenia who is responsible for all possible negative consequences of such provocative statements. Azerbaijan, for its part, will raise this issue at the leading international organizations, including the UN, the OSCE, etc. At the same time, we urge the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to make a decisive statement principally condemning such steps by the representatives of the senior political leadership of Armenia,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Iran’s Rouhani elaborates on talks with Armenian prime minister

[Armenian News note: the below is translated from Persian]

Text of speech by President Hassan Rouhani at joint news conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Tehran on 27 February, published by website of the Presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 27 February

In the name of God. [preceding sentence in Arabic]

I would like to welcome Mr. [Nikol] Pashinyan, esteemed Prime Minister of Armenia, and his delegation. During his visit to Iran, we signed many memoranda of understanding in different fields. Since Armenia became an independent country, we have established close relations between the two countries. We hope to extend our relations further.

Today, both in our private and public meetings, we discussed various bilateral, regional, and global issues. As I mentioned in the negotiations I had with Mr. Prime Minister, we appreciate Armenia’s stance towards illegal sanctions of the United States against Iran. The two countries are determined to continue their strong relations based on the national interests of both countries and prevent the third parties from interfering in their close relationship. The two countries have very effective cooperation in the political, cultural, scientific, and academic fields, as well as tourism. We are willing to expand our mutual ties in these fields. We still have many opportunities for economic cooperation. Both countries need to tap the potentialities in this regard.

Our economic relations focus mainly on the exchange of gas and electricity. In our talks, we also discussed the completion of Khoda Afarin Dam [in Iran] also Meghri power plant [in Armenia]. Iran’s willingness to cooperate in Armenia’s north-south road project was another issue that we discussed in our meetings.

Both parties emphasised the facilitation of road transportation, whether passenger cars or trucks, between the two countries. Both parties emphasized fostering agricultural cooperation as well as Iran’s presence in Armenia by establishing companies in the fields of agro-industry, livestock husbandry, and improving slaughterhouses. Given the close cooperation we have had in optical fibre connections and data transmission, both countries are willing to have more collaboration in the information and communications technology industry. We are ready to export our service.

In addition to economic cooperation, both parties agreed upon trilateral exchange of electricity between Iran, Armenia, and Georgia. Then we will turn it into a quadripartite energy exchange with Russia. We also announced that we were ready to negotiate to export higher volumes of gas to Armenia and export gas to Georgia via Armenia. We discussed the issue of linking the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea via Armenia and Georgia as well.

If I want to summarise today’s discussions in one sentence, I should say that both countries are willing and motivated to expand multilateral relations. The joint committee of both countries will take preparatory measures until next summer and Finalise the details of the projects.

Thank you.

Music: Patrick Fiori, Helene Segara, Lea Castel to give a concert in memory of Charles Aznavour in Yerevan

A concert dedicated to memory of the world-renowned French-Armenian chansonnier Charles Aznavour will take place on May 26 at Karen Demirchyan Sport Complex in Yerevan. The event, titled “For you, Armenia” is organized by French “Shahbazyan” and “Армцентр” production companies. The concert is dedicated to the 95th birthday anniversary of Charles Aznavour.

“Dealing with the name Aznavour is quite challenging. We have tried to make the best and most impressive,” Director Lusine Martirosyan told a press conference on Saturday, speaking of the preparation works of the event. In her words, no dance performances are planned at the event. “The evening will be dominated by Aznavour mood as we will try to pass it through lights and music dramaturgy to convey the Aznavour world to the audience,” Martirosyan said.

French-Armenian producer Hayk Shahbazyan, the co-author of the project, informed that the concert will feature six famous singers – Patrick Fiori, Helene Segara, Lea Castel, Slimane, Kate Rein, and French Armenian singer Raffi Arto.

The concert will be accompanied by Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Eduard Topchyan.

“The main challenge is that the invited singers will perform for the first time with the Philharmonic Orchestra, considering also they are pop singers. Over the past years the Orchestra has performed with number of stars, and I think it will overcome this issue as well to ensure a great event. If Aznavour were alive, he would definitely approve this initiative,” Ruzanna Sirunyan, the Director at the National Philharmonic Orchestra said.
