Patrick Cutrone starts for Italy Under-21s against Armenia this evening as Moise Kean and Sandro Tonali make way.

Cutrone leads the line for the U21s, who are without Kean following his red card in Republic of Ireland last week.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers striker also has a chance to stake his claim as the Azzurri’s default No 9, with Andrea Pinamonti dropping to the bench.

Tonali, meanwhile, has been promoted to the senior squad so Crotone’s Nicolo Zanellato is brought into midfield.

Italy have yet to concede a goal in three games under Paolo Nicolato, whereas Armenia have lost two of their first three European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

Armenia Under 21: Aslanyan; A. Mkrtchyan, Khachumyan, Danilelian, Grigoryan; Harutyunyan, R Mkrtchyan; Melkonyan, Bichakhchyan, Nahapetyan; Hovhannisyan

Italy Under 21: Carnesecchi; Adjapong, Bastoni, Ranieri, Pellegrini; Frattesi, Locatelli, Zanellato; Sottil, Cutrone, Scamacca

THE TEAM NEWS

FINLAND

  • Finland will be striving to return to winning ways against Armenia in EURO 2020 qualifying Group J having lost 4-1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday which followed their 2-1 home defeat against Italy in September.
  • Although they are still second in the qualifying group, Finland’s gap over the chasing pack is down to two points after those back-to-back losses, with Armenia one of the teams within touching distance making this a key fixture.
  • Finland won 2-0 away in Armenia when the two nations met back in March and that result increased their unbeaten run against Armenia to five matches, with four wins and a draw and only one goal conceded.

ARMENIA

  • Armenia drew 1-1 away from home against Liechtenstein last time out with a first-half goal from Tigran Barseghyan cancelled out late in the game. A win for Armenia would have seen them level on points with Finland in second place in EURO 2020 qualifying Group J ahead of this match.
  • Having earned a 4-2 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina last month the dropped points against Liechtenstein were a huge disappointment in Armenia’s bid to try and overtake Finland in the group.
  • Armenia still come into this match with only one defeat in their last five matches since losing to Finland in March and that sole defeat was away from home against group leaders Italy who lie in wait for Armenia in their final group fixture next month.

THE PREDICTION

This is a crucial fixture for both nations as they battle to qualify for EURO 2020. Finland might have lost their last two matches but they are still in a good position to take the runners-up spot in the group and a victory against Armenia would surely give their foes too much to do in terms of leapfrogging them. The hosts have an excellent head-to-head record against Armenia and helped by the prolific Teemu Pukki they can secure the valuable three points.

CONGRESS CONDEMNS TURKISH
INVASION

Armenian
Assembly of America Urges Immediate Action to Prevent Horrific Atrocities

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Senate and House of
Representatives condemned Turkey’s invasion of northern Syria, and called for
sanctioning Turkey for its violence against innocent civilians, specifically
targeting the Kurdish population and ethnic minorities in the region, such as
Armenians, Assyrians, Yazidis, and other vulnerable minority groups, reported
the Armenian Assembly of America.

Today, Speaker of the House of
Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) discussed
reaching across the aisle to take additional measures.

“We must put together the strongest
bipartisan, bicameral sanctions package similar to the bipartisan bill the
House is advancing,” Speaker Pelosi said.

“I will be working across party lines in
a bicameral fashion to draft sanctions and move quickly, appreciating President
Trump’s willingness to work with the Congress,” stated Senator Graham.

Last week, a series of measures were
discussed and proposed in both congressional chambers. Senators Lindsey Graham
(R-SC) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) introduced a framework of legislation that
puts financial and visa restrictions on U.S.-based assets of Turkish
authorities, sanctions military transactions with Turkey and the Turkish energy
sector, and prohibits U.S. military assistance. House Foreign Affairs Committee
Chairman Eliot Engel (D-NY) and Ranking Member Michael McCaul (R-TX) introduced
H.Res.625 to sanction Turkish officials and banks involved in the defense
sector.

“The sanctions we are introducing will
hold Erdogan accountable for this stunning disruption to international
security,” stated Chairman Engel.

“Turkey’s military operation has already
resulted in civilian casualties and threatens global security by creating
conditions that will enable an ISIS resurgence. It must stop its incursion
immediately,” Ranking Member McCaul said.

Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz
Cheney (R-WY) also took the lead to condemn Turkey for its violence in northern
Syria with nearly 30 U.S. Representatives in support of legislation to sanction
Turkey.

Chairwoman Cheney is joined by House
Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), House Minority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise
(R-LA), House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Mac Thornberry (R-TX),
Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX), Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), Rep.
Jack Bergman (R-MI), Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR), Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Rep.
Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Rep. French Hill (R-AR), Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), Rep.
Richard Hudson (R-NC), Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL),
Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-MI), Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX), Rep. Guy Reschenthaler
(R-PA), Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL), Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Rep. Denver Riggleman
(R-VA), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH), Rep. Mark Walker
(R-NC), Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL), Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), Rep. Joe Wilson
(R-SC), and Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR).

“President Erdogan and his regime must
face serious consequences for mercilessly attacking our Kurdish allies in
northern Syria, who incurred thousands of casualties in the fight against ISIS
and helped us protect the homeland,” said Chairwoman Cheney.

“The international community should not
stand by and watch as Turkey once again subjects ethnic and religious
minorities in Syria to horrific atrocities. It is our legacy to protect those
whose lives are at risk and our responsibility to prevent atrocities from being
committed. We urge Congress to take immediate action against Turkey and to
swiftly adopt bipartisan, bicameral legislation,” Armenian Assembly of America
Co-Chairs Anthony Barsamian and Van Krikorian stated.

Established in 1972, the Armenian
Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization
promoting public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly
is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

The revolution falters over Amulsar gold
The contentious issue of gold mining in Armenia presents the Pashinyan government with a difficult dilemma

By Alla Manvelyan | 11.10.2019

Along with a group of activists, residents from the Armenian spa town of Jermuk and the surrounding villages have been blockading the roads to the Amulsar gold mine for some months now. The roadblock is preventing the mining company Lydian Armenia from conducting operations – it was issued a license to exploit the mine by the Serzh Sargsyan government that fell in the 2018 revolution.

The protesters believe that exploiting the mine will result in an environmental disaster, including pollution of the region’s largest source of freshwater, the Lake Sevan. Lydian, on the other hand, claims that gold extraction does not present a threat to the environment. To try and resolve the conflict the new government allocated USD 400,000 for an additional independent risk assessment. However, the findings have failed to influence the positions of either side in the standoff.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikolai Pashinyan announced that the government currently has no legal basis to prevent the company from using the mine. He provided assurances that, should any threat to the environment come to light, Lydian would be forced to address it. But activists are not convinced by these arguments. They claim that the government is afraid of being put under pressure by foreign investors and they also suspect that Pashinyan’s entourage are hiding some of facts revealed by expert assessments.

Along with assurances from the mining company that construction works would not begin before spring 2020, recent calls from the government to clear the roadblock en route to Amulsar triggered another protest action and march in Yerevan (according to information from the ‘Armenian Ecological Front’, around 1,000 people were involved in the protest on 12 September). Further protest actions took place on 20 September, which has been declared Environmental Mobilisation Day. These included a boycott of lessons by pupils at the local school in Jermuk and a public meeting and march in the Armenian capital where protestors protested on bikes and motorcycles. This time around 700 citizens took to the streets in defence of Amulsar.

Who are the real environmentalists?

The Amulsar conflict revealed divisions in the parliamentary majority that had formed around Pashinyan’s party. Recently, Edgar Arakelyan, an MP from the parliamentary group ‘My Step’, tendered his resignation, citing the issues surrounding the mine as the reason for his decision. Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly Lena Nazaryan, who entered politics from the environmental movement, has also publicly expressed her opposition to the gold mining project, as have other Armenian politicians.

In several statements Nikol Pashinyan has pointed out that the ongoing situation is being exploited by those referred to as ‘revanchists’. These are supporters of former presidents Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan, who, along with their family members, have been involved to varying degrees in high-profile criminal cases since the revolution. Television channels and other mass media, which are controlled by representatives of the previous government and which, in the past, were not exactly known for their sensitivity to environmental issues, are now actively highlighting the Amulsar crisis. Moreover, during the protests, various nationalist groupings who had lost their administrative resources after 2018 also attempted to make themselves appear more progressive by adopting the cause.

To reduce the tension it would help to ensure total transparency of dialogue with society.

Remarkably, several public meetings and demonstrations were held in Yerevan at the end of August under the slogan ‘For Amulsar!’ but without the participation of the Armenian Ecological Front — a longstanding and consistent lobbyist for the closure of all mines in Armenia. Suddenly, representatives of the nationalist party ‘Dashnaktsutyun’, which had been part of the government awarding the license to mine Amulsar in the first place, were calling themselves ‘environmentalists’. Even MPs from the second largest parliamentary group ‘Prosperous Armenia’, formed by the influential oligarch Gagik Tsarukyan, suddenly donned their environmentalist hats. Tsarukyan and his party were also always members of the coalition with the governing parties before the revolution and held different government posts.

So far, opponents of the mining operations have insisted on the need for a political decision as proof that the revolution is not over. Supporters of the mine, on the other hand, have focused on the country’s weak economy, the attractiveness of the mines to investors, the unresolved Karabakh conflict, the arms race and, consequently, the inevitability of having to choose between an environmentally friendly economy and one which brings in revenues despite the fact that the majority of the country’s borders are closed.

The difficult path to consensus

Bearing in mind the way in which protests were dealt with by past governments and the unilateral decisions the previous leaders made with regards to the mining industry in general, the attempts being made by the current government to seek a consensus would appear sincere. It goes without saying, however, that the decisions of even the most legitimate leadership will not always fully meet everyone’s expectations. Disagreements and conflict are unavoidable.

To reduce the tension it would help to ensure total transparency of dialogue with society. This process should enable the ordinary citizen, with no real understanding of the intricacies of the environment and economics, to access information about the consequences of abandoning the programme. On the one hand, closing the mine will bring job losses and discontent with the social situation will not be addressed by civic initiatives but by the government. On the other hand, unemployment could still become an issue even if the new mine is opened — one of the consequences of gold mining, according to the environmental campaigners, is that the region would become less attractive for tourists.

That said, we must also be mindful of the possibility of falsification and manipulation by the media, which, even after the revolution, still largely caters to the interests of the oligarchs and groups linked to Armenia’s former leadership. In order to avoid both speculation and well-founded fears about the revival of revanchist forces, we must continue to discuss and refer to reliable environmental assessments. And, if necessary, new assessments must be conducted, irrespective of the cost.

Only time will tell how this situation will unfold. Right now, it is difficult to believe that a few dozen school students, a couple of hundred local residents, a few thousand protesting environmentalists and human rights activists, as well as individual political actors could be powerful enough to place pressure on a government elected by hundreds of thousands of citizens. A decisive factor here is the willingness of these people to take to the streets once again in support of Pashinyan, someone who is, after all, still a popular Prime Minster.

Famous Armenian-American pop singer Cher took to Twitter on Friday to strongly condemn Turkey’s military offensive in northern Syria.

"Sorry to keep harping about Kurds, but I’ve heard about blood-thirsty Turks who tortured and murdered almost 2 million Armenians since I was 11," the singer wrote.

"Also heard in in Armenia. Turk soldiers are still blood-thirsty. Now they will commit genocide on the Kurds with Trump's blessing,” she added.

The singer’s followers thanked her for raising the issues of Kurds and expressing solidarity with them in comments under the tweet.
