Gallery Z on Federal Hill is set to showcase Armenian artist from around the world as part of their April exhibit “Armenian Artists from Around the World.”

The exhibit will open on Thursday, April 4 and run through Sunday, May 26.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 18 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Exhibit

At the “Armenian Artists from Around the World,” exhibit will feature an “extensive niche collection” of fine artists of over 400 established artists of Armenian origin.

There will be two special events at the gallery this month.

On Thursday, April 11th, 6:30-8 p.m., an author here from Armenia, Dr. Melineh Anumyan, will be presenting her book, Acknowledgement, and Condemnation:  The Trials of Young Turks in 1919-1921 and 1926.

Refreshments will follow.

The following week, an opening reception for the exhibit of “Armenian Artists from Around the World” will take place with Gallery Night Providence on Thursday, April 18, 2019, from 5-9PM.

Featured Artists

April’s featured artist is Harut Aghajanian, an Armenian artist born in Iran in 1956.  He studied at Terlemezian College art school in Yerevan from 1984 to 1987.  His highly intricate figurative works on paper are in both black & white and soft wash tones.   His paintings have been exhibited in Beirut, Lebanon, and Boston.

Anoush Charlene Bargamian, a.k.a. Sweet Angst, born (1963) and raised in Providence, is an artist/art educator living and working in Chicago.  Her abstract paintings and prints employ many mixed media.  Her Horses of Honor public art installation was installed in 2014 at the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, UBS Tower, Chicago, IL.

Harutune Hovhanesian Born in 1922, Harutune taught for 25 years at the Yerevan Teachers’ Training Institute, and states:  “A bad teacher represents the truth; a good one teaches how to find it.

George V Kaprielian, born in Providence, “Varki” is a self-taught local photographer who has commemorated notable Providence landmarks in striking close-up angles.

Kevork Mourad, born 1970 in Syria of Armenian origin, is a world-renowned artist who also combines art with music, dance and theatre. He has had solo exhibitions around the world and has works in museums worldwide.  He has produced and directed plays and musical-visual projects, has perfected a technique of spontaneous painting to live music, and is a teaching-artist member of Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.  A new visual-musical piece commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, premiered there on November 2, 2018.  He lives and works in New York City when not traveling internationally.

Marsha Nouritza Odabashian has exhibited in galleries and museums in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, California and Louisiana and has works is in numerous collections.

According to the National Olympic Committee of Armenia, on March  gymnast Arthur Davtyan scored 15.058 points in a vault 23 and won a  bronze medal.

A day earlier, in the exercise on the rings, Arthur Tovmasyan rose to  the second step of the podium, and Vahagn Davtyan took the third  place.

Harutyun Merdinyan was content with fifth place.  The NOCA also  reported that 4 athletes represented Armenia at the World Cup in  Doha.

YEREVAN. – Armenia national football squad captain and Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan on Monday was hosted by President Armen Sarkissian of Armenia. 

The Facebook page of the President has informed that, during his visit, Mkhitaryan presented his Arsenal jersey to President Sarkissian.

The operation of those incomprehensible Oriental martial arts federations disturbs us. This is what Acting First Deputy Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Gabriel Ghazaryan declared during the March 25 special session of the government.

He stated that there are nearly 250 such federations operating in Armenia. “They actually don’t have the right to implement educational and athletic activities because, first of all, the representatives lack education. This is also a matter of our children’s health. We are fighting against these federations, and I’m certain that the issue will be solved more easily and quickly with the Ministry of Education and Science,” he said.

Sports: Freestyle wrestlers start training camp ahead of major international tournament

Armenian freestyle wrestlers kicked off training camp in Olimpavan, the Wrestling Federation reported on Monday. According to the source, on April 6, out team will leave for Romania where the training will continue with junior freestylers. It is noted that the training is the last phase of preparations ahead of the European Championship.

Meanwhile, the junior team will attend trainings in Tsakhkadzor on April 10-22 and then will head for Belarus to participate in an international tournament from April 23-27.

Sports: Statement by Deputy Sport Minister on current state of Armenian Taekwondo Federation

Deputy Minister of Sport Gevorg Loretsyan has issued a statement on the current state of affairs of the Armenian Taekwondo Federation.

“Dear friends,

I would like to announce the following regarding the Armenian Taekwondo Federation and the Taekwondo Championships of Armenia:

  1. After several debates and discussions, it was decided that the Taekwondo Championships of Armenia will be held on 1 April, and a competition commission has been set up to hold the championships properly.
  2. Within a short period of time, the chairmanship of the Armenian Taekwondo Federation will convene a session with at least 2/3 of the total number of members and confirm the date and format of the elections of the President of the Armenian Taekwondo Federation, taking into consideration the opinions expressed by all interested parties.
  3. The new members of the chairmanship will also be elected”.

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, ARMENPRESS. ISIS has lost its final stronghold in Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces announced Saturday, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist group in 2014, CNN reported.

The coalition of Kurdish and Arab soldiers backed by US, British and French special forces said it defeated ISIS and fully liberated Baghouz in eastern Syria.

“Syrian Democratic Forces declare total elimination of so-called caliphate and 100% territorial defeat of ISIS. On this unique day, we commemorate thousands of martyrs whose efforts made the victory possible,” tweeted Mustafa Bali, head of the SDF press office.

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, ARMENPRESS. Armenia has been elected as Chair of the 64th and 65th sittings of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Zaruhi Batoyan said on Facebook.

“I congratulate us all”, she said. “The sitting is the second largest event of the UN after the General Assembly. Armenia has been elected member of the commission for 2019-2023”.

YEREVAN, MARCH 24, ARMENPRESS. On March 24, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze had an unofficial meeting in Yenokavan, a community in Armenia’s Tavush province, the PM’s Office reported.

Addressing various issues of Armenian-Georgian relations, the sides touched upon other topics of mutual interest.

Stressing the importance of Armenian-Georgian relations, Nikol Pashinyan and Mamuka Bakhtadze expressed confidence that enhancing cooperation will promote multifaceted exchanges between the two neighboring and friendly states in a number of areas. In this context, the parties emphasized the importance of frequent informal meetings.

Pashinyan and Bakhtadze had another informal meeting as early as in January in Bolnisi, Georgia.
